Diabetes refers to a group of conditions characterized by a high level of blood glucose, commonly referred to as blood sugar. Too much sugar in the blood can cause serious, sometimes life-threatening health problems.
There are two types of chronic diabetic conditions: type 1 diabetes and type 2 diabetes. Pregnant women may acquire a transient form of the disease called “gestational diabetes” which usually resolves after the birth of baby. Pre-diabetes is when the blood sugar level is at the borderline: higher than normal, but lower than in diabetics. Prediabetes may or may not progress to diabetes.
During food digestion, carbohydrates - or carb - break down into glucose which is carried by the bloodstream to various organs of the body. Here, it is either consumed as an energy source - in muscles for example - or is stored for later use in the liver. Insulin is a hormone produced by beta cells of the pancreas and is necessary for glucose intake by target cells. In other words, when insulin is deficient, muscle or liver cells are unable to use or store glucose, and as a result, glucose accumulates in the blood.
In healthy people, beta cells of the pancreas produce insulin; insulin binds to its receptor on target cells and induces glucose intake.
In type 1 diabetes, beta cells of the pancreas are destroyed by the immune system by mistake. The reason why this happens is unclear, but genetic factors are believed to play a major role. Insulin production is reduced; less insulin binds to its receptor on target cells; less glucose is taken into the cells, more glucose stays in the blood. Type 1 is characterized by early onset, symptoms commonly start suddenly and before the age of 20. Type 1 diabetes is normally managed with insulin injection. Type 1 diabetics are therefore “insulin dependent”.
In type 2 diabetes, the pancreas produces enough insulin but something goes wrong either with receptor binding or insulin signaling inside the target cells. The cells are not responsive to insulin and therefore cannot import glucose; glucose stays in the blood. In other words, type 2 diabetics are “insulin resistant”. Here again, genetic factors predispose susceptibility to the disease, but it is believed that lifestyle plays a very important role in type 2. Typically, obesity, inactive lifestyle, and unhealthy diet are associated with higher risk of type 2 diabetes. Type 2 is characterized by adult onset; symptoms usually appear gradually and start after the age of 30. Type 2 diabetes accounts for about 80 to 90% of all diabetics. Management focuses on weight loss and includes a low-carb diet.

I have type 2 and its been over a year since I was diagnosed. Since then I took insulin and pills for about 2 weeks until i decided to stop and switched to a super low carb and sugar lifestyle. Its been more than 1 yr now and i have not had my glucose lvls go higher than 120 (usually between 90 & 110). I still eat ice cream and burgers sometimes but I make sure to exercise daily! And I always check my glucose at home daily just in case. Its crazy how much money I’ve saved from not buying insulin, needles, and meds.... bc i dint have insurance for my meds so i payed almost $200 for my first insulin medication for a month.

Carbohydrates and sugars are the same so keep in mind that when checking. But exercise will be your best way to keep ur sugar down. Try walking everyday or weights.

The best explanation? In what world? Does it explain the cause of type 2 diabetes? Why does insulin can't "open up" the cells for glucose? Why does pancreas produce more insulin if you are type 2 diabetic? What causes type 1 diabetes? This video is mostly devoid of an educational substance.

It is painfully obvious that you have a problem comprehending a written text. All things being relative, I distinctly and categorically, stated that this video is "The best explanation [I'VE] heard". I did not, for one confounded moment, suggest that this IS the best.
I struggled to understand the basic difference between Type 1 and Type 2 diabetes. This video has more than adequately addressed MY ignorance. It has, moreover, opened a gateway - provided a building block - upon which I will be able to further my knowledge. This is good enough for ME (all things being relative) for this ought to be the fundamental objective of an educational video. Yes, it is most certainly the best video in MY humble WORLD.
For high-handed eggheads and pedants of your ilk, I suggest an earnest engagement with medical journals and textbooks to satiate your hunger for educational "substance". What laughable irony. You anticipate "educational substance" yet choose to visit an animation video for your edification - an animation video that is, clearly, intented to outline rudimentary information. Now go to!

Type 1 is sudden onset. By the time it's noticed, insulin therapy is immediately necessary for survival. NOT PREVENTABLE.
LADA (Type 1.5) can go up to 2 years (sometimes, usually sooner) before needing insulin therapy, but will always end up depending on it. NOT PREVENTABLE.
Type 2 does NOT necessarily need insulin therapy unless their pancreas is damaged due to overproduction of insulin, which ends up being many, but it is preventable. GENERALLY PREVENTABLE.

I was diagnosed with Type 1 diabetes when I was 16. February 22nd of 2012. My sophomore year I decided I was tired of being over weight, I cut out all junk food, drank water 24/7, started using the gym at the school. Within 8 months I went from 200lbs, which is what I weigh now, down to 111lbs. I was passing out in school and ended up in nurses office a lot. They couldn’t figure out why. Went to family doctor where they diagnosed me. My skin was pale and grey as well. I was nothing but skin and bones. Gained all my weight back after pregnancy. 😂 Spent last 6 years eating healthy and working out and can’t break 200lbs.

@@NarutoUzumaki-kh6ch Weight is irrelevant when it comes to type-1.
In type-1 it is a autoimmune response. For some reason your own immune system decided that the pancreas was an enemy and killed it. You can have a healthy lifestyle or a unhealthy lifestyle. It doesn't matter because the body can trigger the autoimmune response no matter what situation you have. I am pretty certain I had this autoimmune response because of the prolonged amount of stress I suffered under during the pandemic. It was years of constantly trying to solve impossible equations and meet impossible deadlines. And the longer the time went on, the worse the situation get. It is in fact only now, a few months ago where I have actually managed to catch up to where the norm should be.
You can see type-1 as where you have lost the key (insulin) that opens a door. You can no longer open the door because the key no longer exist.
In type-2 your weight does matter. Type 2 is where the body has gained a immunity to insulin and no longer responds to it. This immunity can have been gained by being unhealthy as you simply worn the body out trying to deal with all the sugar you eat.
You can see type-2 as where you have the key to open the door, but the key is so worn down after so much use that it no longer fits in the lock.

Most people in my family I know have type 2 because it's the most common form of diabetes in America, so it makes sense. I guess I'm the only one with Type 1 in my family.

Can soda trigger diabetes? I recently stopped drinking soda (as it was my go to for energy) cold turkey and I have a difficult time functioning at times. I am always really exhausted. I am no medical expert but what I can say is that, you have been adapted to getting quick energy from them. Sugar is the worst form of energy as its very temporary and also very quick. That is why you should avoid energy drinks as they cause energy fluctuations in your body throughout the day. So I would recommend slowly avoding them and we should not suddenly stop any habit as our body adapts to things, so leave it slow which I hope you have done already. Also please consult an actual doctor too

      He'll yes soda triggers diabetes
It's loaded in sugar look at the ingredients... and also the sugar plus the caffeine makes you addicted to it. So yes if you are stopping cold turkey that's why you r feeling like you r crashing. And maybe feeling down or blue. Is only gonna be for a bit longer after the sugar and caffeine leaves your body you will be back to normal.

      @wakeup6759 Před 2 lety

your experiencing withdrawal symptoms, much like an addict who stopped taking alcohol or meth or coke. it's your body's wat of adjusting without the sugar, which is also a drug. you did your health a favor by stopping the intake of soda, which is only sugar and water and phosporic acid which eats through the bones. sugar is more addictive than all the illegal drugs combined. do you research and never go back to it. you can get energy by changing your diet to eating more greens, fruits, veggies and lean meats and fish. have your blood checked for celiac disease and other autoimmune disorders.

Which diabetes are you referring to? Genetics (runs in family) and certain ethnicities (Afro-Caribbean, South East and South Asian, Pacific Islanders) are more susceptible so yes genetics can be more than 20% elevated risk of T2DM (does not mean you will have it automatically). The cause of T1D is unknown so far and the cause of T2DM insulin resistance is also not explained fully. We only know elevated risk (genetics, lifestyle), but we do not know what exactly causes it.

with type two, genetics may or may not play a part in predisposing a person, and the usual culprit for onset is diet. however, type 1 diabetes is different and the cause is most often genetic. like the video explained, it is due to an immune system malfunction. type 1 has no cure, and it is hard to live with.
never judge someone for whatever illnesses they have. if you are not their doctor, you do not know the cause and you do not know what they are dealing with in their private life. it is important to listen to others in order to better understand them, their lifestyle, and disease.
