11 Secrets the Queen's Guard Don't Like to Speak About

- Here is a riddle for you: red jackets, unsmiling faces, and huge black furry hats. Who are they? The University of Houston Marching Band? Well yeah but, I’m talking about those other guys! Those are the Queen's guards in London, the capital city of the UK! These easily recognizable and regularly photographed guys may always be in the limelight, but there are some curious things about them you definitely didn't know!
For example, if an absent-minded tourist doesn't stay out of their way, the guards have all the rights to knock them over. So, watch out! Or have you ever thought why the hat strap is below the guard's nose? The thing is that the hat is so heavy that if it's struck or shot in combat, it would easily break the soldier's neck if the strap was positioned under the chin. 😱

SUMMARY:
- It's a fact that no-one is allowed to touch the guards or threaten them. But it’s a widespread myth that they can't speak no matter what.
- Even when a guard faints, he has to do it in a particular way. As soon as he feels dizzy, he must remain at attention and keep this position even when he falls, most often ending up face down.
- Royal guards have strict instructions to do their necessities right on the spot. Luckily, their heavy woolen trousers are black enough to cover their embarrassment.
- Since staying still for too long is bad for their health, every 10 minutes the guards leave their spot, turn, march several paces, then turn around, and go back to their place to stand still for the next 10 minutes.
- The Queen's guards wear red jackets in spring and summer and long grey coats during the fall and winter months. The coats are long and warm enough to allow the soldiers to stay motionless for a long time.
- If a superior notices a guard stretching his lips in a smile, the guard will face a fine of up to a week's pay! In most cases, the overly cheerful guard should be ready to part with about $260.
- It turns out that when the drill boots stay in direct sunlight for too long, the polish on them starts to melt. It means that every time after their shift, the guards have to re-polish their footwear.
- Hats made from the real fur are impressively heavy: one can weigh from 4.5 to 9 lb (2 to 4 kg). And when it rains or snows, the Bearskin collects all the liquid and gets even heavier!
- To become one of the Queen's guard, you have to take the BARB, which stands for the British Army Recruit Battery test. It's a half-an-hour-long computer-based test which checks your problem solving, analytical, and logical skills.
- The red color was chosen because the red pigment was one of the most available at those times. Also, this color needed only one stage in the process of dyeing.
- If you’re lucky enough, you can hear them perform the Imperial March from Star Wars or even Indiana Jones and Game of Thrones theme songs!

I honestly feel bad for them wearing such heavy headwear and jackets
Me too 😐

They picked their job I agree it’s but as I said they chose it
Remember they are humans too!
tbh I feel bad for the guards with the rules. they really have to sacrifice everything.
Cassie P. I know righ lol
Cassie P. Not really they apply for the job which means they read the TOS/terms of service. So they know wht they have to do
And people redicule at them
They get good pay though.
Yeah I rather be an artist so I can stay home
Here's a correction, their uniforms aren't red because it was the cheapest and only available colour, it's because they are also known as the redcoats, their uniform is based off the redcoats, look at the paintings from the battle of Waterloo, same uniform
THANK YOU FOR EXPLAINING THE CHIN STRAP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! I've literally watched at least 50 videos trying to figure that out. How uncomfortable. They should change those hats, that's ridiculous that they put those boys through that much unnecessary torture.
Some corrections and info..
1) The Queen's Guard are called Guardsmen
2) They are soldiers. They are arguably one of the big four being, Gurkhas, Royal Marines, Paras and the Household Division. They fight hard, are well trained and led. They are respected by the other divisions in the army.
3) They are known as "wooden tops" due to the colour of their berets
4) They used to run the drill course for the army.
5) Their officers are usually aristocracy and wealthy and are known as "Ruperts"
6) What they don't know about cleaning, ironing, polishing, washing, marching and "being tidy" is not worth knowing
7) They are not cute, furry, bunny wunnies. The rifles are loaded, the bayonets are razor sharp and they can use both...
Hope this adds to your film
The guards only load their rifles if the situation calls for it. They usually have unloaded guns
sabre22b just a question how do u know?
they aren’t called guards men they are called grenadiers
@@engamu5578 they do have loaded magazines hidden though
Vinz Castro yeah, they do of course. But there rifles are usually not loaded.
And they wonder why the Queen has stayed alive for so long
She is not human.

Here’s the real Question: why did they become guards in the first place
It’s a regiment in the British Army they’re 7 regiments Grenedier Guards, Coldstream Guards etc. They are serving men in infantry in the army

Literally the most chill guard I have ever seen
I know that too
Yep
I know they guard the Queen and royal palaces but their official title is the Brigade of Guards not The Queens Guard.
Not so sure about the height requirement being enforced in the past, my father served in the Scots Guards back in the late ‘50s early ‘60s and he was barely 6 feet tall.
Another point is these men are not ceremonial troops, they are regular Army Infantry soldiers who carry out these ceremonial duties in addition to their normal infantry role.
The other mistake in the video was regarding the red colour.
When the London regiment are on deployment, Regiments from other parts of the UK perform their ceremonial duties. The guards wearing the grey coats are normally from Scotland.
@@wilsjane The grey Greatcoat is worn by all regiments of the British Army for ceremonial duties in winter not just the Scottish ones.

The hardest thing about the queen guards job is to try to not laugh themselves to death by looking at each other
And you speak from experience?

My favorite part is when they tell if the Queen is sad/angry or happy
They actually wore Red because back in the days of field marching it was alot harder to tell how many men were marching as the red would just blend in as 1 big rectangle which would make the army seems alot bigger than it actually was.
I don’t know how much of protection one can offer after standing still in a hot weather wearing 4kg bear fur on the head nearly fainting...

FYI the hats are very light for their size and don't get wet when it's rains as they are naturally water repellent. They're actually 0.7kg. They tried synthetic in the early 90s and didn't work. Also in the summer you might want to add that they also wear ice packs under their underwear to keep cool. Maybe a little face checking next time. Yours sincerely a Brit.

Thank you for sharing✌💛☺
Wanda Richardson The Queen is a Constitutional Monarch, she has very little say in what or how things are done. The soldiers are all volunteers and take a lot of kudos in being Guards. Each Regiment of Foot Guards, Grenadier, Coldstream, Scots, Welsh and Irish, take it in turn to do Ceremonial Duties at various sites around London. Along with The Household Cavalry, Life Guards and The Blues and Royals, who are the “Tin cans” sat on Horses. When not on Ceremonials, they are front line infantry soldiers or, in the case of the Cavalry, armoured. I believe the USA has ceremonial troops, sailors and marines? The tomb of the unknown soldier springs to mind. Honour guards. Silent drill squads. It could be argued, all those copied from the British 😉🇬🇧
