      That's what CIG is kinda aiming for. "Simulation" of life in future. Some players probably won't ever own a ship, cuz they'd be doing something like farming, or mining, on a single planet. Or be part of a crew on someone else's ship, cuz there are a lot of multi-crew ships and I doubt that NPCs will be as good as real places. On turrets, yeah, maybe. But not in engineering, medical bays, etc.

      @@RusStarik Given the nature of how the game is sold, I very much doubt we'll ever see players without ships.
      Having said that, it sounds like a fun kind of 'challenge' mode.
      I had a look at what's currently viable ingame and the only low end career you can realistically do is hand mining.
      If you have the patience and go to the right planet (Hurston), you can do this with roughly 1500 UEC of equipment (this assumes you don't count the default flight suit and helmet - if you do, you need to add about 2500 UEC to the cost) plus 500 for a 24 hour rental of a cyclone to get to the only cave that's in a reasonable distance.
      (should take you about an hour to get to)
      Obviously it's more sensible to join a crew or at least get a lift.
      You'd also be better off with the backpack armour, which would add another 1500 vs the standard version of the same light armour type which has half the capacity.
      In theory you can also do this on Microtech, but that drives the cost way up because you need the cold weather armour to survive that.
      This is the entry level job that you can do in the current builds of the game if you have no ship.
      The vehicle rental is only 500 UEC, and you only need to run 2-3 missions (possibly only one given the cyclone can carry 1 SCU of cargo so you can dump multiple pack loads of mining materials into it and continue) to have enough to buy a Cyclone outright.
      So, I can see this being an interesting challenge.
      In the future I expect you could also do some of the deliveries without a ship because we'll have public transport.
      And there's other potential missions that could be done this way eventually.
      (plus obviously joining a ship crew.)
      Still, I do find it interesting that there is even a single thing that's theoretically doable without a ship;
      And assuming a minimum start of clothes on your back + flightsuit, you'd only need about 2500 UEC to get started.
      (which is still a problem if you mess anything up or if bugs strike...)

      It’ll be interesting for deep space exploration, I hope they’ll be systems where u need a fully self sufficient fleet. So not just these caps, but mining ships for quantum, then refining via starfarer and refuel. Otherwise you’ll always have to be X amount away from a place to refuel. Food u can forage and hunt (fauna), spare parts u’ll have to stock.
      Maybe with surface basis once your so far out you can construct one as a midway point if it can fulfil some of those requirements, then explore from there. But that all depends on what CIG intend with those.

    • @tcunero
      @tcunero Před 4 lety +7

      @@athos163 Yes, This is exactly what I want. I can imagine a Javelin with a small fleet of support ships for refueling and support. A single scout/exploration ship finding resources a starfarer to refuel, ect. A kind of large scale survival in a distant place. As you said getting a pioneer to make a resupply base deep inside the frontier. This should all be possible with the tools they have advertised. I hope there are regions of the map that entire star systems are baron and just getting to one means traveling through 5 or 6 empty systems. The amount of emergent gameplay would be massive. Imagine a large area of space with multiple empty systems with no civilization in them. A few mysterious flora and fauna spotted on planets and moons here and there. Traveling beyond these systems would be hard and it would indeed be unknown what is there. That sounds like a lot of fun. CIG could even put a whole new race at the other side of such a place eventually. It would act like a great ocean of danger to cross from their civilization to ours.

    • @z-beeblebrox
      @z-beeblebrox Před 4 lety +6

      And this is why it's so important that SC has lots of star systems. Player Orgs with Capital ships are going to need systems that have both much higher and much lower security than the current locations, and LOTS of room due to economies of scale. Figure, two Capital Ships flying around the one and only system is one too many, but five Capital Ships flying around three systems is perfectly fine. As the system count grows, the number of Cap Ships that can exist without the world feeling crowded grows faster.

    That Great White went out like a champ.
    Calling it now - cap ships will be anything BUT rare. Too many people have already bought them over the last several years; there's literally thousands of owners out there and every single one of them pledged thousands of dollars to acquire them. I know, I know, CI were clear what their intent was for this type opf ship, but it doesn't matter. Like I said, too many people spent too much money to get them and they are damn well going to want to fly them. And for my 2 cents worth? Sure, why the hell not? LET them solo them with Ai blades and NPC crew and let them be just as viable as real people too - I WANT to see mass battles with these things. Make them expensive to use but totally manageable with missions that recquire capital class firepower and thus have capital class rewards (and balanced of course with capital class risk). There, cost problem solved. They are still going to have all the strengths and weaknesses Morph mentioned here so I say let's have at it and enjoy what they have to offer. Looking forward to the day when we can have thousands of people on 1 server; that's when things will really start to open up with this game.

    This is where Logistics will come in handy. It's going to be imperative to have Fuel Runners / Starfarers gathering and giving fuel to these massive ships. Yes, you can buy fuel - But you will save so much overhead cost paying your own Org for Fuel - Let alone find someone who will help you for free. [Namely if the Org is fighting a big battle or fighting Vanduul]
    By having Fuel Runners, you save yourself quite a bit of money. But we can even go further than that and look at the Endeavor - Which has the potential to grow food in their Bio-Domes. Growing food, then having "Truckers" run supplies to your major ships will be an amazing Game Loop.
    By doing those two things, you effectively cut the major costs of sustaining your Orgs fleet.
    Finally: Org Taxes - When it comes to sustaining a combat fleet, everyone in the Org should pay some small taxes to have an active military to protect them. My prediction is most smart organizations will be working together in a smaller area. Having a smaller fleet of fighters that can quickly respond to pirate attacks will be essential to any Organization.
    These are the sort of things Org leaders and Capital Ship owners need to think about...
    Especially when it comes to fighting your enemy. ;)

      I know pretty damn well that when this game is finally up, I'll need some protection to operate my Banu Merchantman. Org taxes will legitimately be a thing, as there is no way, especially early on, to expect being able to do any kind of transport missions with something the size of my Banu Merchantman, a Hull D or a Hull E, without being one hell of a prime target for anyone knowing you are in the area.
      So, logistics for both active, and passive (jamming radars, etc) will be very important. Basically, a capital ship can't operate alone, as a swarm of smaller ships can take it out, but also, it needs to be refueled, and restocked, and those refueling it, and restocking it will be using those huge transport ships, which will, in turn, need their own protection and chain of supply from smaller ships.
      Basically, for any Org to properly run one of those Capital Ships, they will need a multi-tier level of logistic, basically set as an enterprise, with distribution centers, convoys, etc.

What remains to be seen is at what quality level all the combined technologies of iCache, SSOCS, Network cull binding (CSOCS) and Server Meshing actually performs like when you have a large amount of players in the local vicinity.
      You do save processing power on the clients, however, the client still has to render everything locally. Some sacrifices will most likely be need to be made for performance reasons on the client side if you want to render 1000 ships/players/npc/weapons all shooting etc.

      I believe Star Citizen's fundamental flaw is the developers of this game have such a powerful drive and love for this game, I know what I just said makes no sense just hear me out. I believe these developers want to make the best possible game they can in the world and that can and often does work against them. They have such a incredible drive for perfectionism that they are willing to delay content for months to make it the best it can be. Notice how people rarely complain about the actual content in a update, but instead grumble about how they got it 6 months late. Server meshing has been around for over ten years, but it always had drawbacks to it, things that developers were forced to concede in the name of time and ease. But if Star Citizen's development has taught us one thing. It's that the developers refuse to concede quality for quicker updates. Server meshing on this scale is so much more complicated than in any other game prior. You'll have to find ways to keep track of all the players running within ships, the bullets and lasers, any animation's of ships exterior, potentially you'll also have to manage ships entering and exiting larger ones, you'll have to manage the ships positions themselves form the smallest fighters to the greatest capital ships. No other game in history has attempted to do something like this any where near this scale. I'll bet my ass that the Star Citizen dev team is busting there asses off trying to make this look as beautiful as if can possibly be. EVE is the closest we've ever gotten to server meshing on this scale and level, but they're not even having to track half the things star citizen will and it sure as hell don't look as good as Star Citizen's meshing likely will.

I am bewildered why CIG does not sort this out. Second point: I just don't see a need for these accept by the Navy. As you say, it needs a full time crew with deep pockets to refuel and maintain. Third point: I already own quite a few capital ships; it would be nice to purchase water (and other provisions) in cases rather than by bottle as we have today :). Anyway time will tell.

    • @redrosecounty
      @redrosecounty Před 4 lety

      It's a game, in real life a Navy owns such warships but not so in a game like this so there won't be maintenance costs that only a country could afford. Think of running costs inline with ship sizes, there are many ships roughly 1/3 to 1/2 the size of the Idris. The Idris is similar in size to the 890 Jump, so maybe 1.5x to 2x the cost in fuel at most. 3x to 4x an Idris for a Javelin maybe? It'll be balanced to be expensive but not excessively so. Energy weapons reduce re-arming costs. Crew compliment is going to be your biggest outlay, paying players or NPC's is going to cost. You'll find many Idris running skeleton crews of around 8-10 players/NPC's when optimal might be 16 or even more (7 turrets, 4 bridge crew 3 fighter pilots, 2 engineers) but that gets to be unsustainable due to cost and players not wanting to hang around all day.

    The largest ship I own is the Reclaimer, and there are days I wonder about the purchase. I don't wonder because of spent money, but I wonder about crewing it. I love the larger capitol ships - and as someone who mines a lot my hands involuntarily reach for my wallet whenever I see an Orion - but I also try to be pragmatic about how much ship I can handle. There are enough folks in the orgs I belong to who own capitol ships that I'm certain I'll have ample opportunity to enjoy those ships as a crew member, and that's a big part of why I initially backed Star Citizen.

      @Cee Z You're woefully ignorant of the state of Star Citizen and/or game development in general. What the game currently has no other game in history has been able to achieve. If you think someone can make what we have now with tech never before seen in a game (64 bit precision, seamless streaming, multiplayer from ground to space) with $50 million then you're delusional. There is no game out there even remotely like Star Citizen. It's not a scam if they are giving you what they promised. Yes it's slow, very slow but that doesn't make it a scam. If you order food from a restaurant and they take three times longer than expected but it's good food the worst you can say is their service sucks, it's not a scam is it.

  • @Mercurio-Morat-Goes-Bughunting

    Oh, THAT's why I wanted to comment on this one! Capital ships will be all about how you manage ship operations. Hydrogen fuel concumption, in the 890 Jump for example, is a non-issue when you use gravity to your advantage, schedule in some quality ballistic flight time and generally avoid fighting against the nature of the ship. As other gameloops and mechanics get fleshed out, they will mesh nicely with things like this provided that capital ship operators take the time and trouble to plan ahead, do some scheduling and work in sync with what is going on locally.

    I imagine once they've successfully and fully implemented the capital ships in the PU, they would have at least one or two missions that are exclusive to capital ship owners. As in like a 50-man base raid in an asteroid field, or a one on one capital ship battle against a kraken or a pirate variant javelin/idris with fighter escorts. It would really set the stone for massive events to take place for full orgs to train on, and considering the amount of people we can have right now, it'd be awesome to see these 'Missions' to be implemented as sequences (the more you finish from start to finish the more you reap the benefits).

  • @callipygianpilot2700
    @callipygianpilot2700 Před 4 lety +12

    Since you asked, here's what I think:
    CIG has been doing an amazing job at designing beautiful ships, that look amazing in CZcams videos like this one. Unfortunately it feels like they have only a very remote idea how actual gameplay within these massive vessels will work. They say things like "80 crew members", but how much meaningful gameplay can there actually be for 80 players on a single ship, with a single pilot...? 75 turret operators would be quite bored I imagine 99% of the time, even during combat.
    It feels to me that they are rolling out this kind of footage mainly for publicity, for current players to say "Ah ha, we are getting there" and for new players to say "Holy sh*t they have this in a game??", but in reality the game is far far (far far far) away from any playable condition with regards to what it promises to become.
    As a backer from 2015, I've been waiting patiently, but lately in all sadness I have been losing this patience.
    BTW is theaters of war out yet?

    • @redrosecounty
      @redrosecounty Před 4 lety +4

      In fairness their "80 crew members" statement is massively misquoted. They stated that is what they had to put into squadron 42 to make the Idris look lived in, it was empty otherwise. So filler NPC's to occupy the mess hall, bunks, additional stations, flight deck, janitors and double shifts for most roles. They even referenced the possibility of making an NPC fluff pack available for the Idris so you could have filler NPC's like those mentioned above to make your ship less like a ghost ship. The actual required number of players/NPC's to run these ships is far lower, like 10-12 people for an Idris. 6 for manned turrets on an Idris-P, 2-4 point defense turrets that are automated and don''t need crew, 2 Bridge crew, 1 engineer and 2-3 fighter pilots. Of course you can have more if you want, multiple engineers, 4-6 bridge crew, multi-crew fighters and maybe your ship will run better but that's optional. They stated very early in the project (it was actually Rob Irving on Wingman's Hangar that said it. They were acutely aware that getting even 20 players together for a raid in other MMO's was a challenge. Expecting players to get that many together for an Idris for example is not plausible, then what of a Javelin? 40? Then what of a Bengal Carrier (can be captured and crewed in game) 80? It's all too ridiculous to contemplate. The whole subsumption AI is foundation for work they are doing to try and address the crew issues of all multi-crew ships, capitals included. Whether it will work or not? Who knows.

      @@redrosecounty I actually don't mind having "fluff" Npcs roaming around the capital ship decks, cleaning, cooking, fake repairing consoles and whatever the might pretend to do on stations and cities. This adds life to the place, and frankly no sane player is going to want to play as a janitor on a Bengal, so you can fill those spaces up with fake jobs. (I bet someone somewhere is already developing a plumber simulator for space toilets...)
      I stand by my point though, even if the number is reduced to 20 or 12 maximum positions on a multicrew ship. Sure it's feasible to find roles for all, but how fun will those be, most of the flight? Even for bridge crews I feel CIG has little idea on how to make their roles meaningful to the operation of the ship while being fun to do.
      I feel that more thought should be given towards gameplay elements like this, and less to "fabrics blowing in the wind", melee takedowns and other features no one ever really asked for in a space sim focused on spaceship combat...

    this is a late comment, I think when homesteads are implemented will also add to the capital ship side of things. More orgs will be formed as they will have more to work towards- building a massive base is something many orgs would enjoy, and a feature many people would create an org to build something of that scale, more orgs mean more capital ships, more fleets and more space battles, these things, along with server meshing will be some of the main contributors to making the dream of Star Citizen the reality. Massive landing pads could be constructed by the orgs base to land things such as Krakens, as Morph said Javelins and such wont be able to but a Kraken could. The ability with homesteads to build a base is great, and if the ability to build these on the surface of a planet is there, then possibly the ability to build them in space too will become possible, massive star bases could be constructed and designed purely to support an orgs capital ship and/ or fleet of large ships, these space stations would have the ability to re-arm, repair and refuel the ships of this scale, or just serve as an area for an orgs capital ship to stop at on its voyages. sorry, I think I got a bit too enthusiastic and nerdy there. But yeah, you get the idea. Thanks for the video Morph, you said some really cool ideas in there.

Only the be awaken once again when the drums of war are ringing and will reign detestation to anyone who oppose them.

Imagine an org needs a small volume of high value items to keep them going for a mission, but moving the capital ship would be expensive, so they have a few members use freelancers or similar ships to do a cargo run. The more things a capital ship can do, the more it will expand gameplay possibilities.

    I LOVE this!!! I can't wait to see the battleship consisting of 224 seats and hopefully, of about 125 fighter hangars for a fleet or 3 - 8 wings (each wing consist 3 - 8 squads and each squad consist 3 - 13 fighters) of PC flying fighters and a shipyard for it to dock.
    That battleship would be one Idris bigger in six directions or three times the size of Idris and would have 224 bunkers. Commanding squads, wings and fleet as squad commander, wing commander and fleet commander respectively would be practiced in Arena Commander for battleship operation including those in frigate and destroyer.
    The Idris is a destroyer carrying 3 - 13 fighters and has about 18 - 30 turrets while the Javelin is a frigate, micro-battleship or battlecruiser carrying 3 - 8 squads of fighters and would have about 6 - 10 turrets. It's the amount of turrets that is proportional to the amount of fighters that makes a capital ship a corvette or a battlecruiser and a destroyer or a battleship. The less the turrets, the more the fighters and the less the fighters, the more the turrets in capital ships.
    Check out 'Battlestar Galactica EPIC Battle Montage' in CZcams to see what this battleship concept would look like in Star Citizen. Also check out 'Star Citizen - Awesome PVP Boarding Party Experience | Carrack Interior Damage State!' to see how organizations combat each other.

Even if its having to pay them a salary and all that will still allow someone with a larger ship to make full use of that ships power if their friends arent on. When capital ships come out i think that hiring AI crew is going to be a mandatory thing if your org isnt this massive org and you have multiple capital ships.

    3. Take my money. (and I need to find friends stat.... lol

    To an old EVE Online player this is kinda sweet and funny. Since EVE Online has been doing capital ship mechanics since 2005 and doing it quite good...

    I'd love to be a part of a large ORG like that, supporting a full crew and doing the team work. :D It's why I joined the game.

    I imagine that this could be a really good starting point for forming big communities. Discord Servers with 300+ players or so could afford them and build up a real fleet. What I dream of is a fleet of 3 Javelins and a few Persuses fighting against a similar fleet. This would be so cool. +

    The full intention is for NPCs to be able to perform every role a player can.. Tony Z when talking about NPC crew said he wanted a Captain of a ship to operate as a Captain with NPCs being fully capable in what ever role they have been acquired to perform. He and also Dan Truffin have talked about those NPCs also being trainable so you can put some time and UEC into building crew members for your ships.
    NPCs will act, like you say, as other payers not simply NPCs and so NPC crew should cost virtually the same as a player crew unless that player crew decides it doesn't want to be payed or has some other arrangement. You will also have to provide players with food and drink so it shouldn't matter if you choose NPC or player to hire for a role they should cost the same ideally. However, more often players will want to be given an equal share so it could cost more or less to have a player crew depending on arrangements and how that crew member is acquired.
    Only way to make it fair for all is to have crew members be awarded percentages of rewards as set by the Captain of the ship. Set them wrong and NPCs might get disgruntled and leave same as a player would.
    What does being landed have to do with being able to board a ship?...... sure a Javelin won't be in a hangar unless they build them large enough (which for some stations they might) but station security will not allow ships to approach an occupied pad or dock without authorization and unless the ship is huge the station guns will make pretty fireworks out of them. Also to not be detected by EVA boarding you would have to send only 1 person with high quality anti detection equipment... these ships won't be in huge danger while docked unless they are in unsafe space.
    It is probably to soon to be speculating on how affordable things will be in SC as nothing is setup right for earning UEC yet... that won't happen until we hit beta.

    It will be interesting as well to see how the Cap ships designed to be "self sustaining" like the Polaris and Kracken will manage as well

    Oooohhh those capital turrets dipping into the seams like that... I know it's not an easy fix, especially for turret mobility, but that's gonna be something Robert is gonna obsess over till it's fixed.

    I am in love with the Kraken, but I also mostly solo, so I will just hope to maybe buy one with an org I join. But presently I am up to about 15 packages lol, I just buy whichever ones come on sale during events with Lifetime or 120 month insurance.

    I think between AI crews and a decent player for hire match making system (with Uber styler ratings...) I’m still optimistic that capital ship will be pretty viable. Even if you do have to spend two weeks mining to pay for your Sunday night fun...

    imagine: a Org with 1000s of ppl, fully mobile in strike forces, split down to a Carriers or 2, and a some Destroyers, with wings of escort Fighters and Drones patroling... onboard the marines patrol, engineers roam about to keep things running and work on systems and fighters, Pilots rotate for patrols and go to sleep or meet in the messhalls etc... and thats "just" a vision for "small" capital ship fleets... it will be GLORIOUS!!! but imagine we get serious Warships, Frigattes or Battle-Carriers like the Bengal class... OMG just the thought makes me craving af * ^^ *

    good video . looking forward to the bigger ships coming into the game. can see this capital ships having the support of big miners and re claimers supporting it. me personal as fleet view say is going to have to run a crew 6 to 15 . so looking forward . just make sure income is more than expenses .

    My concern is jump points. If they're hard to navigate and dangerous if done incorrectly, the big capitals will likely never move for fear of expensive damage or destruction.
