At 17 I enlisted and found myself over seas serving my country. The things I saw and did built a strong layer of stone over my heart. I got out and joined law enforcement which didn’t help the situation. It only hardened it further. All the while I had a longing for God, but I never felt worthy of being in his presence. After hearing this I found myself crying which I’m not very comfortable with. I found my defenses coming up hard, but the grace was just to much for my defenses to over come. Thank you Matt for all you do.

@@paulgemme6056this one is so old and tired.
Jesus used the literary form of hyperbole to make his point that we must not seek to exalt ourselves, we've got no business trying to make ourselves important.
He didn't mean literally never use the word father, and we know that for several reasons.
St Paul "For I became your father in Christ Jesus through the gospel". If it was a forbidden word how could St Paul have made such a mistake?
The next verse says call no one teacher. Are you going to go around policing the little second graders at your neighborhood school?
The origin of the word doctor has the meaning of teacher. Have you never addressed your physician as Doctor? If you have, looks like you have a problem under a literal interpretation of this verse.
And what about the people that just a hundred years ago or less called their actual fathers "father"? Dad hasn't always been the default norm.
This is also such an English language centered issue. We don't really have a good sense whether father is the perfect translation. What if the word used in the original could have been daddy just as well as father? What about languages where there may not be alternatives and there is only one word for father? How would their translations treat the situation? Are they just doomed to say parent instead? I doubt it.
American protestants always have such an ethnocentric, English focused tunnel vision of scripture. It's so frustrating when y'all get pedantic about singular words like English is the only thing that matters instead of the big picture message

“For I became your Father though Christ Jesus in the gospel”- St. Paul of Tarsus 1 Corinthians 4:15
If Jesus isn’t being hyperbolic then we’d be required to follow this law to the T and not call our earthly fathers our fathers.

When it comes to those "instant gratification" expectations, we as a society really need a reset on what is realistic and kind when it comes to our expectations of others. People's perspective is shrinking rapidly and its tough to know where to try and draw that boundary. I love that they discussed the struggle to desire to be charitable vs draining yourself to the requests of others.

Thanks, Matt and Fr. Boniface, for the great discussion and the quotes from The Context of Holiness! The life of St. Thérèse demonstrates that healing and holiness aren't about becoming someone with more self-sufficiency to overcome temptation but becoming *little* ... someone who knows his or her littleness and brokenness, denies that voice to be self-reliant, and relies entirely on God and the transformative grace that comes from doing His will in the midst of our brokenness. Our wounds, like Jesus's on the Cross, are the contexts of our own transformations that will bring God glory! God bless!

I like the idea that we carry an island of the work of Christ, grace and ‘Eden’ inside us in order to be lights in a dark world but I think the phrase “I’m Jesus” maybe takes that a step over the line of where the world it going to look at us as delusional rather than representatives of Christ. I’m not Jesus..but I’ve tasted and found that He is good, I’m filled with His Spirit and I carry Him around in me…but I never confuse my sin stained carcass with the one and perfect savior, Son of God.

It's not only a general German practice to repeat the mystery in each Hail Mary after the name of the Lord Jesus. It is also how we Hungarians pray the rosary. I remember how surprised I was realising it's not a thing in other nations' practice.

I think it would be very interesting to get Justin Marler on here for a conversation. He’s a guitarist who helped found the pioneering doom metal band Sleep, before leaving the music industry to become an Orthodox monk in the 90’s for 6 years. During which time he created an iconic zine called “Death to the World” which fused heavy metal aesthetics with the teachings of the church. He has since returned to life as a layman.
I know he’s not catholic, but i think his story and journey are fascinating, and while he’s done a couple interviews, I think this would be the most interesting space to hear him recount his tales.

What was Fr. Boniface saying around 30:00 about a group demonstrating how to pray for healing for a miracle? It seems un-Catholic to me to expect that we can demonstrate how to wield God’s power like a presentation at a conference. Does anyone have more info on those encounter school of ministry intensives?

I was struck by the same comment. I don't know anything about them though.
My assumption was that they would pray and the form of healing would be up to the Spirit. But we are called to make healing prayer as Christians

if you are looking for ways to grow your faith and serve God you can always ask your priest or the Legion Of Mary at your parish and they probably have all kinds of options of things you could do to build up your community and your faith at the same time.

1:42:10 Well, regarding money, in many parts of Europe we often don't use nor have cash (being paid by the employer directly to a bank account), so it's reasonable for a church to have donation options via some digital way.
I have a friend who serves as a missionary priest in France (I think he leads about 6 parishes now). And while I'm terrified by the thought of the state being the owner of churches, especially with such an anti-catholic government as France has, my friend explained that it became sort of a blessing (God bringing good from a bad situation). Old churches need a lot of investment to keep them in good condition and the country is obliged to conserve them. With such a little number of parishioners it would be impossible to gather necessary funds - and the churches built after the act of claiming the churches by the country (because of this they are Church of France's possession) do face this problem gravely. Of course there are many risks connected with this situation (demolition, transforming churches into disrespectful places etc.), but for now a lot depends on the fact if the parish is actually alive and priest's decisions.

Hey Matt, when is Fr Boniface going to read the Rule of St Benedict for Hallow?
Here is a link to it on CZcams: czcams.com/video/JpvRDhy0RS0/video.html
When you guys were talking about spiritual devotions and the one's that Benedictines keep, all I could think about is how it is The Liturgy and The Rule that help the heart ascend to Jesus. Either way take and God bless.

I’m sure no one cares what I think, but I prefer simple camera work shifting between the two people without special effects, text overlays, b-roll that tries to “illustrate” what is being said. It cheapens the real conversation. It makes it feel doctored up, manipulated. It is inauthentic.
