  • Honda Acura J Series V6 Accord, Pilot Odyssey Ridgeline MDX RL CL TL. Covers 3.0L 3.2L 3.5L 3.7L J Series engines. Crankshaft pulley bolt can be a real pain but take your time and sometimes you have to use brute force to get it free from the crankshaft.

The problem isn't your wimpy little ratchet but rather that trying to loosen the pulley bolt with your wimpy little ratchet doesn't do much more than spin the crank. Don't feel bad though, you'll get the same results with your friend's big, whopping ratchet. A number of methods have been concocted over the years to stop crank spin, none of which work all that great, like chain wrenches that usually end up marring the pulley to lodging scary objects in between the flywheel and bell housing. The solution lies with the guys who developed the pulley in the first place, and for a fraction of the cost of that new air compressor. honda's crankshaft pulley holder slips inside any '90 and newer honda pulley with a 50mm hex opening and fastens to most frames via a preexisting 8mm threaded hole. With the crank locked in place, even your wimpy little ratchet can get it to budge.
If it is the Accord, yeah, those crankbolts are a SOB to get out; really the hardest part of a timing belt R&R on an Accord. I believe the factory uses red loctite on them.
Most 1/2 impacts don't have enough balls to remove them. You definitely need the crank hold down tool (about $45) before you tackle this job. I have helped the removal by applying a small amount of heat to the face of the bolt with a plumpers type torch. I follow it up by using a 4ft piece of steel cheater pipe on a breaker bar while someone holds the hold down tool in place.
Had one that make a gunshot type sound when the bolt finally broke loose; sounded like someone shot a rifle in the shop....scared the crap out of everyone, they were ducking behind cars and tool boxes

I bought a Milwaukee 2767-20 1/2" High Torque Impact Wrench w/ 48-11-1850 5.0Ah Battery, a Lisle 77080 19 mm Harmonic Balancer Socket for Honda/Acura & other assorted items for the timing-belt job in my 4th-Gen Acura TL.

Okay day 2 of toiling with this damn bolt. I tried a Harbor “Fright” Earthquake 1200 lbs of torque half inch socket impactor. Nothing. Bought an electric Bauer 1/2” impactor with a shit ton of torque and break away power. Nothing. I snapped a 1/2” breaker bar that was made by TEQ TOOLS….. that sucks. The bar did too. Now I bought the big stuff. 3/4” breaker bar, to a 1/2” extender attached to a 1/2” 19 mm socket. This doesn’t work I’m calling the local Lake Michigan DNR and see if they need a new addition to the reef.

They never show the actual stubborn bolt getting removed. Y’all make me sick you owe me 3 minutes.

  • @artiemejia3695

Use a jack! Just place it under the breaker bar and keep jacking it up until it breaks free. I learned this on CZcams a few months back and it’s been a game changer!

  • @97warlock

garenteed to work-for you. Those of us that dont have that weird tool that goes on the crankshaft are still SOL .... iVE SPENT AROUND 6 HOURS OFF N ON THRUOUT THE DAY & STILL STUCK UNABLE TO break mine loose.

I used a 3/4 inch socket with a 3/4 inch drive, 4 ft, breaker bar, and it came off relatively easy on my 2007 Honda Accord V6.

I had to heat it with a torch like you did, and used Ingersol-Rand's wireless impact gun (around 1140FT-LBS) + heavy-mass crank pulley socket. I think part of the reason why that bolt gets stuck, aside from peculiar engineering that Honda's known for, is that whoever reinstalled the bolt didn't follow the correct procedure; apply oil on part of the thread & between the bolt head & the washer.

  • @rich0ne

Interesting, I have busted a few helping friends with a Milwaukee 2767 with a regular deep impact (only one I just had to torch for a bit). You have the 2663 impact? which is rated for like 600 ft-lbs at most.. lol fail. Get the Milwaukee 2767 and you won't be having to resort to any cheater bar.

  • @tombrady9385

You need to toss the pieces of junk impact in the trash. My impact takes that out like butter.

  • @shovelhead1871

Or you can pull your ignition fuse and bump the engine with breaker bar and socket attached. Just support breaker bar on the fram or something.

  • @draytonPW

I like how you used the jackstand to support the extension. So simple and yet I have never thought of that. Thank you!

Love your channel! I am going to be doing my very 1st Honda J series timing belt replacement this weekend on my 2001 Accord Coupe with the 3.0 and I’ve watched several videos and bought all the necessary tools for this specific job, I really hope mine doesn’t fight me like some of yours have! Thanks for all the great videos and information!

This video saved me. I tried everything. My 1/2 impact, my brothers impact with a lisle socket, a torch, a 1/2 breaker bar. Nothing worked except your recommendation on 3/4. You saved the day! Thank you

That's the same kinda problems I face when wrenching get the most stubborn bolts from time to time giving a real workout physically and mentally, so your my kind of mechanic who knows how real wrenching gets sometimes. 😎

This totally worked! though I used a half inch setup. First try i sheared the tip of a 5” -1/2” extension. Then the next try it worked! You saved my ass dude!

  • @Ben-ww1zq

I certainly am appreciative of how understanding you are of the situation that we're all in, I see so many videos where they like yes just go buy this tool I'm like awesome when I get a vehicle and can drive 60 miles I'll go get one

You are my hero! I’m going to go try this. I have spent a small fortune on tools trying to get that bastard loose. I don’t have a 3/4” breaker bar, but I’ll try it with what i have. Will report back.

  • @londalecarter3482

Thanks for this video. I was thinking of buying a power bar to do this. ITs good to know there are more options!
