Such an interesting list, Allen! I just finished my 15th Discworld book and I can safely say that Pratchett will forever have a place on my top 10 list of favourite authors. I have recently started reading the first Sharpe book, but it's early days yet, so I have no opinion. I read Cornwell's Grail Quest books and they are phenomenal. Can't wait to read everything else by him. Thanks to your recommendation I have read the first LPQ book. Didn't love it, but will read the next one as well. I think I should maybe try some KJ Parker. Great vid, like always!

  • @thedrownedkingdomsaga7847

Great list Allen! Absolutely adore Bernard Cornwell, he's definitely a top 10 author for me as well! GRR Martin is there too for me, of course, even higher, but a lot of the other authors on your list, while on my TBR, I have not read! Looking forward to delving into some of those in the future.

The reasons you cite for many of these--slower built stories, amazing character work, beautiful but not flowery prose--are the reasons Hobb is my favorite, so I do so hope when you are able to give her a try, you can look past Fitz's whining and enjoy her books! But, it also makes me optimistic to try many of these, which is why I think I haven't yet... Its so nice to live in Schroedinger's box of limbo and not know where I'll fall. 🤣 Great list though, always love how thorough you are!!

I know I've said it before, but I can't not imagine you cackling with glee during editing when you add in the clips. This time especially the Family Guy 'insists upon itself' and the last Jurassic Park for John Williams. I know I almost spit out my coffee and started laughing out loud when those played.
Good list, I can't find any fault there. I wish I could find more time to read because I know I've only scratched the surface with Abraham and Tchaikovsky and haven't even sampled Cornwell or Parker. They are all on the TBR though, so that's some solice.
In some order I'd probably go Robert Jordan, Brandon Sanderson, Tchaikovsky, Vince Flynn, Stephen King if only for the Dark Tower, Jim Butcher, John Gwynne, Pierce Brown, Blake Crouch, and Michael Crichton. Likely there are some others that might swap in like Castell or Gaiman.

I don't understand the complains when it comes to Abraham (though I've only read A Shadow In Summer) but I found that slow books for me usually means little character interactions for a very long time (I felt it a lot while reading Fellowship of The Ring and Two Towers, though RoTK redeemed it for me. I however DNFed Assassin's Apprentice at 70% for that very reason as I just didn't connect with Fitz at all -- it's a first person POV which possibly made it worst for me).
I'm currently reading Enemy of God (I've finished part I) but had put it down after getting burned out on reading on my Kindle. I've been burning to pick it back up again as I love Cornwell's writing style and can now sense the depth of his character work (Derfel's dilemma when it comes to Merlin, the breaking of the chicken bone). I had never read an Arthur retelling before though I did read some of Chrétien de Troyes' works (Erec and Enide, Cliges, Yvain the Knight of The Lion) but didn't find them very memorable so decided not to read the rest of his works (not surprising, I'm usually not a huge fan of medieval texts, personally). I had also watched TV shows (Merlin BBC, Kaamelott which is a very famous French tragicomedy) so I did have some prior knowledge. For now, I think Cornwell's vision is my favourite of them all.
I have Guns of The Dawn, The Folding Knife, Augustus (need to finish the Cicero trilogy first), Excalibur, and the rest of the Longprice Quartet on my Kindle (no choice, we're moving soon) but I have a feeling I'll end up wanting to buy all these titles when the time comes. 👌 Most authors you talked about on that list interest me: Josiah Bancroft, Pratchett, Martin (I've only read Game of Thrones 10 years ago and still remember many scenes vividly despite barely watching the show as it was too graphic for me), but they won't be priorities for now as I'm already a bit overwhelmed. 😅

Awesome! Thank you for the comment! I also don't understand the complaint about Abraham and I know that some books are a slow burn and fizzle out but I never feel like Abraham's slow burn doesn't have a.satisfying payoff.

I recently finished the Dagger and Coin series and I just loved it, with Geder being one of my favorite fantasy characters. Have you read/watch The Expanse? My top authors:
    Agatha Christie
    Oscar Wilde
    J.R.R. Tolkien
    Runner-up:
    Charles Dickens
    Donna Tartt
Guess before watching: Pratchett will be #1 or in top 2. K.J. Parker will be in top 3.
    Nice list!
I really like ASOIAF but GRRM is not a favourite author because I haven't tried his other works.
Tchaikovsky has been a bit hit or miss for me.
Bancroft is an excellent writer but I need to read more from him before he is a favourite author (on that note, I hope to apply for The Hexologists eARC as soon as it is available)
John Williams is a lovely writer - I really liked Stoner and Augustus but that's all I have read.
Sir where is Shakespeare? Not even an honourable mention for the dear bard? 🤭
Yess I was right about Parker and Pratchett! 🥳

I would probably put Tchaikovsky and Daniel Abraham on my top 10 authors. Also Steven King, maybe Steven Erikson, Robin Hobb, and I think I have to put Sanderson on my list because I automatically read everything he releases.

All I've read from Tchaikovsky so far is Dogs of War and Children of Time. I feel like he comes up with amazing ideas but has mediocre execution. I'm sure it's partially because he's become so overhyped in the last few years. I think I'll check his shorter fiction next based on your comments. It's the one author I would love to love but I just can't yet. Both books were slight disappointments, 7-8/10 ratings.
