    Little about me
    After spending most of my life in the big city, living a congested life within society's grip I decided to leave all that behind and become more self reliant living a simpler more fulfilling life close to nature. My wife and I have 6 children, we homeschool, raise a garden, mini farm and try to be resourceful as we can providing everything the family needs from nature.
    You can now buy me a coffee so I can keep building and making videos! Thanks for your support!

    I was wondering why you put the pink batts under the floor and not the same stuff ( closed cell foam board ) you put on your roof, with 1/4 inch mesh under that to keep rodents out.?? Did you glue the floor ply down to combat squeaks in the future.?? You have done a marvelous job, the best family cabin build I have ever seen by one person. Thank you for sharing this journey.

    Hi Dave, how you prepared the mortar for chinking? Thank you in advance.

  • @carlmclelland7624
    @carlmclelland7624 Před rokem +3

    Dave, the chinking is REALLY bringing the cabin to life! Great job, buddy. Question: on logs with major looking splits in them, do you get air leakage through them, or do you lose a significant 'R' value thru the cracks? Would it be beneficial to fill the cracks with epoxy, or is this a non-issue?

    • @tribeofdavid8
      @tribeofdavid8  Před rokem +3

      thanks! its a non issue those are checks and never go all way through not even close nothing gets through them. same way on my 11 yr old cabin next door and no issues ever

  • @wayneeden98

  • @mountainwoodsman8116
    @mountainwoodsman8116 Před rokem +1

    Chinking looks real good... better than the pink. Tedious work, though. Did you use nails or screws to "porcupine" the logs so the mortar would stick? The guy over at "The Outsider" youtube channel used a metal mesh between the joints on his cabin that seemed to work out real well. Nice work.

    • @tribeofdavid8
      @tribeofdavid8  Před rokem

      Thx man yeah so much better than looking at the foam lol. I used nails it’s least expensive route and I had great luck with the older cabin I built using same technique

  • @metricdeep8856

    I love the look and I agree with the method but who has the numbers on thermal efficiency over 2x4 construction? I like both methods but I think if you can get the building materials to the site then modern methods would be more efficient. No?

    • @tribeofdavid8
      @tribeofdavid8  Před 10 měsíci

      Would have taken me way longer and cost way more for me to build this size home with modern materials and lumber. I have a “stick” built home (2x4)also that is right next door and the numbers don’t lie. This place due to its thermal mass heats and stays cool way better

    • @metricdeep8856
      @metricdeep8856 Před 10 měsíci

      @@tribeofdavid8 Thanks for your response. I'm not discounting your experience. Part of my question included having plywood and 2x boards delivered on site. It's hard to compare that level of readiness and ease of build. Some may not have time to harvest logs and prep them. Also, there is something to be said for thermal mass.....and that goes both ways. Thermal mass only buys time...not immediate performance. I assume that "heats better" means that it "feels" more comfortable but I believe that characteristic can be built into a modern style home given the correct materials. I'm not saying you are wrong....I'm just asking as I'm looking to do what you have done. There is a a lot that contributes to perceived "comfort". Cheers and congrats on your achievement. I tip my hat to you.
