Unhinged character expressions are such a delight to draw, but pair a little strangely with a cute drawing of a magical girl...
not if you're drawing homura though,
she stated that her love for madoka is "selfish love"
Toga springs to mind- adorable little murderer lol
Unhinged despair is a good expression on Mami !

I really love that when you were talking about drawing beautiful women you went with a woman with dark skin, locs, and scars on her face. Those kind of features aren't often romanticized, and it was lovely to see.
I don't know why they're not portrayed as pretty more, they're beautiful features.

Yeah I love drawing extreme faces !!
Right? Everytime I draw an extreme expression, I make that expression, and/or pose, and think
'Man. People are gonna wonder what the heck is going on rn.'
@@emero.a.scythe1786 Yeah, it tends to make people run from me.

Anyways; im really good at drawing emotions. I cant give you a lot, its kinda just built in me,
But ive tried to use geometric anatomy i knew/referenxed from cartoons,
ended up on the eyebrows not only ne seen as a trapazoid or rectangle, but actually being 3 dimensional,
Overlapping the eyes, making out of elypses sharp triangles for an angry look.
And the eyebrows are seperately on those rextangles, you can tilt those to give it even more power.
Just dont hold back i guess...
Bridgeman is great. Bodys are made of boxes boisss.
And get lots of inspiration.
@@AxxLAfriku what
i was trying to draw a character reacting to a death but she just looked like this: 😦
LMAO FR- SHE JUST LOOKED MILDLY DISSAPOINTED AND I DID T KNOW HOW TO FIX IT
Showing reaction to death is hard to draw because I can’t imagine how I’d feel or look if I saw someone die or found a dead body. I try not to think about stuff like that lmao
Drawing a character reacting to a death sounds tricky! Mainly because most of us don't see people dying daily, or we've probably never stumbled upon a dead body (unfortunately some people have) and the way shows/movies portray a character's reaction to a death isn't always accurate, but if I had to imagine a character's facial expression to death.. the eye's pupils would decrease in size, the face would whiten or probably be a sick yellowish color, the lips would be wide shut but shaking (or it could be half open but unable to make any voice) a character might start sweating excessively or shiver, the placement of the hands would be on the mouth or stomach, the character's posture varies, they could be hunched over or standing very still and unable to move, or would immediately run away (they could trip over or be unable to run properly without looking back) Im no expert but I think it all depends on the context of the scene, the character's personality or how many times they've seen a dead body, and who's the dead body..
I forgot to mention the eyes and eyebrows expression, the eyes could either be wide open in horror or half closed and holding back tears, while the eyebrows get effected according to the eyes, they could rise up in shock, frown, or be very confused because the character doesn't know how to react, like I said before it all varies
"ah shoot this really ruined my vibe 😕"
Don’t forget about head tilt and body pose
Balanced and composed vs. unbalanced and energetic
They’ll only further enforce a character’s emotions or maybe expose them if their face doesn’t
2:55 the bottom right face reminds me of that Lemon guy from Adventure Time. Every time he got angry, upset, sacred or any major emotion his face would stretch and the eyes would almost crooked. Adventure time is a pretty good reference point for some more animated faces with how they do that, imo. Loved this video a lot and helped me better understand my faces ! You know all the good tricks !

I just thought of an idea:
So what if she drew the "perfect ship", like what she did for the perfect boyfriend and girlfriend video. She could combine all the popular ship dynamics and tropes to create the "perfect shipping pair".
Good idea
Could be fun
People are into terrifying ship dynamics I’d be scared of clicking on such a video
Just wanted to say, the art improvement over the past year has been absolutely amazing. Your art has somehow become even more stunning
I completely agree, it has changed so much for the better its really amazing
And apart from her artstyle, the tutorials and comic panels keep getting better and better
right? love seeing how her art changes over time!
I actually started drawing expressions during this video with the tips, let's just say it helped *A LOT* , the characters look way more alive :)
The obsessed face is especially cool because if you cover one half of it and then the other, you will see two different expressions
My future main story/comic has themes and elements of emotions, mentality and negative sides about ourselves so this really helps.
Edit:
Im sorry if its taking a bit for my future comic to be released but ever since you guys showed your interest and support in the story I want to tell, it just motivates me to move forward with the story's development :D
Edit from 1 year later:
Its been out for a while now and I completly forgot to edit this in the comment itself - Its on Tapas called Undead Eyes.
A story about two kids that try to survive their now distorted hometown. It revolves around the two characters' companionship and their trauma/fears.
The theme has slightly changed to trauma, not so great memories and fears. But it still has a bit of its past themes in some way.
Where are you going to publish it? I'm interested in reading it :)

Yknow what I find interesting is that I actually think that with the “beautiful girl” drawing at 6:11, the girl on the right, who is showing more emotion, is actually prettier than the other one because she feels real. She feels human, whereas the other one is so picturesque and perfect that she feels fake, and I think that’s why it’s so important to show emotions in drawings because you may think that well, the emotion will take away from their beauty but in reality it actually adds to their beauty because more people relate to that. And that’s what I think people find beautiful, is flaws and mistakes and just people being human. Thanks for coming to my tedtalk
I love how Lavender’s “emoji faces” really look like the yellow moon emoji in particular: 🌝
Drawing wacky and extreme expressions is honestly one of my favorite things to do in art.
So excited about Unfamiliar getting a physical release!
a thing i unconsciously do while drawing faces is do the expression while i'm drawing it??? i guess it kind of helps me imagine how the face moves and scrunches without needing refs. ^_^
Haha! I do the excact same thing! Sometimes when I listen to music I make weird faces during my favorite bit or the high notes 😭💀
Kinda like putting yourself in their headspace to get a better grasp of how to put it on paper.

@@snippyhera Thank you💕and I'm sure you're a beautiful poet
I heard there was an anime director(I think Miyazaki?) that didn’t like writing sad scenes because the animators would have those expressions when drawing those scenes, so he liked writing happy ones more
When she said spicy expressions I was like... 😳
Also congrats on Unfamiliar, excited to read it!
Congrats on getting your comic published! That must have felt so awesome.
i love how most of her vids are turning scary stuff into simpable characters
I just love how your style of eyes makes it 10x more expressive and unique. Thank you do much for the inspiration! :)
Well now I’m in the mood to draw expressions (I need to practice that more anyway)

Exaggerated expressions are MY FREAKING JAM, they make me go feral.
Im gonna be honest- when i saw "spicy", i thought we were gonna get a wattpad kind of episode. I love the drawings tho, and the tips!!!!
Intense facial expressions is literally my favorite part about designing a character/scene. It's just so fun to experiment!
Something I struggle with is to copy the character I have just drawn in different sketches, they often end up looking like a different person in each sketch, do you have any tips for that while still creating more emotions for them?
I think you should make a character sheet so you have a reference on what they look like and dont drive away from it, and make sure to give them outstanding traits different from the other characters, things like the shape of their eyes and shape of their face or add things like freckles or piercings to make them more distinguishable.
I know i may be late but i think this channel done something to help with that a while ago.
Instead of using the other art as refrence, I think you should put the character you wanna draw again under the actuall peice your working on, just lower the opacity of that layer and I feel like it would be easier to see how things are, and I feel like that can be helpful somehow idk

Cool to see Unfamiliar being uploaded in print I would love to finally be able to read the whole story
This is such an incredible video to wake up to! I really, _really_ needed this cuz I struggle so much with only being able to draw plain, static facial expressions...
I actually really love the beautiful girl with the single tear. She looks shocked. Like something horrible happened, and she hasn't really processed yet.
last week i was trying to draw a very conflicted character and I had to give up because I couldn't get the face right. this video came out at the perfect time!
I love to use shoulders and body language in my comics! I don’t see it talked about enough in the art community!
i needed this, i love drawing very expressive character faces THANK YOU SM
Extreme facial expressions are so much fun! I love them but they are hard.
I always undersand: "Hey everybody it´s love in your town!" - I can´t :..)
I mean, there's definitely a time and a place where the less exaggerated features on the pretty woman you did work I think. If it's a quiet moment, some sort of 'too shocked and in horror at the situation to move or think' where they're just catatonic it works, it just depends on the situation around them
5:43 in my opinion arcane is a great example of strong expressions + pretty characters
Since my comic is fantasy I gave all my characters expressive elf ears to push the expressions. Two of the characters, who are pyromancers, kind of just burst into flame when they’re emotional.
7:52 I actually draw this kind of expression verry often ... i guess its because I like to draw demonic carakters and stuff like that so the expression kinda suits them 🤷🏼♀️
Her “hey everybody it’s lavendertowne” just clears my skin
Hey LavenderTowne!!! I just wanna say you've been a huge help and have inspired me to draw more and more, everytime I watch you video's my hands tingle to start drawing!!! You're awesome, keep going!!!!
Gah the way your art style has evolved it just looks so so good
Thank you so much for this! I've heard about the squash and stretching of the face, but I thought that it wouldn't really work with my art style. Thanks to this, I now understand that it is not just for cartoon styles! Again, thank you very much. And also, congrats on Unfamiliar getting published! It must be really exciting to get something you've work so hard on for years get recongized!

OMG CONGRATS ON THE PUBLICATION :D
I have a character and her whole thing is that she's supposed to be gorgeous and stuff (i could explain why but I will leave it has that) but I draw her with alot of emotions, and I even draw "ugly" expressions. I love drawing her in anyway, crying, eating, being mad, being happy! Emotions are fun to draw.
I love how you showed this, and I'd love to thank you for educating on this topic because I definitely learned something :)

just saw this video and I really like it. especially how you explained what you were doing and the troubles you'd have with each drawing depending on what emotion you're doing
EEEE IM SO EXCITED TO SEE YOUR WEBCOMIC PRINTED!!!
Congratulations on your comic being printed!
I definitely struggle with extreme expressions so this helped, I love them they are really amazing!
2:20 I love how cartoons are like this. I call it the "reverse homunculus" effect where our minds exaggerate the changes in a person's features and so it feels appropriate to draw them exaggerated
i find that theres a lot of beauty in expressive faces, especially with a character who's usual main focus is how pretty they are. its gr8 to see sorrow or rage in a character portrayed as elegant or gorgeous in their day to day life
I have a humanoid species that communicates a lot with just expression and this really helps!
It's also useful if you want to make a character with very gentle expressions. Different ways of expressing emotions makes the character more interesting and shows us their temper - softer and less intense expressions tells is that the oc is a very calm or delicate person. It can vary a LOT but it's a cool thing to keep in mind
YOU RELEASED THIS AT THE PERFECT TIME-

“i presume you have a jawbone” 😂
For me, I’ve found that the key to facial expressions is the way you draw the eyebrows. Try to push the limits of the way the brow line meets other parts of the face. For surprise, I try to make the inner tips of the eyebrows nearly meet the hairline, while the opposite ends are much closer to the eyes. For anger, it should be almost the opposite.
Aw Haley, I'm SO proud of you publishing Unfamiliar!!! (I'll try to buy it!)
These tutorial type videos are always super helpful!! My art has improved significantly since subscribing and following your advice :D
When you were drawing the creepy emoji with the squash and stretch I thought of Veggietales, they squash and stretch all the time
All of the faces on the bottom at 2:59 could be Twitch emotes, especially the middle one.
You always explain things so well, its really nice

It happens to me all the time I get cought up with making them beautiful that I have trouble giving them unique facial expressions😅 this way makes them much more interesting thanks😊
About the beautiful face problem a good reference would be bungou stray dogs
A lot of characters in that look really "pretty" but they are not afraid to make em look like demon spawns, but yeah they're still great
(Also I'm no professional so..)
theyre usually so pretty but why does chuuya look like a turtke sometimes
I've started doing this thing where I watch one of your videos when I wake up in the morning and try to practice it with a couple of drawings throughout the day.
