Ironically, I was in an awful art slump while I was working on this video (How fitting that it was during a tutorial video HAHA) so this was supposed to be finished weeks ago, but I was struggling like crazy to be happy with anything I drew. I'm feeling much better now luckily ^^ It happens to all of us, and while I still need to teach myself not to feel guilty when I have a few days off to recollect myself, I'm very grateful that my audience is always reminding me that it's okay to take a little longer if I need to T___T Thank you!!

Also, I actually learn a lot, especially about how artists depict character's personality through different expression for the same emotion/state of mind.
Hi Emily! Thank you so so so so so much for making this. I actually use your drawings as inspiration, and I love your videos so much. I remember that video that you made about you being a teacher, and you met a couple of kids who drew a lot. I actually wanted to use you as inspiration because of your amazing drawing skills. Ever since I discovered your channel, I thought I discovered a whole new world of drawing. Now, before I found your channel I always criticized my own drawings. Because my friends would draw so much better. Here are some of the stuff they would say “How about drawing the eyes the normal way?” Or “Ha, i’am so much more better.” It really hurt my feelings, because sometimes, my friends would call me “Crybaby” because I cry so much. And my parents would be embarrassed by telling me to. It just hurts… but drawing feels like therapy, it makes me feel so.. happy! Of course, I still compare. But, I draw as good as I can.

the way you draw emotions has always been something i admire about your style, you have a real skill for conveying emotions simply with the face of a cartoon, i'm not very good at that myself, so it's nice to get tips from someone who's so good at it!

I feel your pain
So what I got is, when the character is confused, mad or something that makes the character’s eyes look more closed is when the eyes should be drawn sharper and darker. Also what I got is that when the pupils look more dilated, the eyelashes are darker. In Emily’s way of drawing, pupil sizes, shapes and sharpness effects the emotions
I can't lie, I found this is really useful, thanks, especially for someone who's just starting off this is amazing
I swear the stoic characters and their emotions just hit me HARD like Giyu Tomioka, in the manga when he smiles it is so rare so when you see him smile it just goes BAM right through the heart!

@@pogz1 Have you tried to draw basic geometric forms? drawing cilinders at any perspective and volume helps a lot as well. i recommend you to draw gestures everyday too !! just a humble advice c(ò w ó)/

Nah, always have a fan when you're about to break up. It gives a more dramatic feel and not only that, you feel like you're elegantly ugly crying instead of just ugly crying lol
haha definitely, can't break up or have emotional scenes without the perfectly slightly swaying hair from fan or gust of wind.
An exception could be a windy day...
Additional bonus points if it about to rain or already is raining

We need more of these, this has actually been really helpful. I recently took an interest in drawing and I've always struggled with two things: facial expression and hair.
Yes those are both hard to draw
And I mainly draw Splatoon characters and their hair is VERY hard (except maybe the regular inkling girl, regular octoling girl and regular inkling boy hair, those are pretty easy haha)
Who else thinks that this was the most helpful video on characters emotions or expression found on CZcams history! Like gosh you might think CZcams has alot of videos but not all are helpful like theres not a single video like yours far far in CZcams! Please please do more videos on your art style we just adore and love it! Press the like on who ever agreees . I like it how Emirichu is not saying “this is what you need to do”, “these are the rules to doing this”, or “you need to do this a specific/certain way.” No Emirichu is not saying any of this, she is just giving us some advice to making more expressions, and telling us a bit how she draws, and that we shouldn’t do something thing like everyone else does, but that we should use other people’s style/ how they do their things so that we may get an idea on how we should it ourselves.

what i notice in mangas (mostly anime) the hair gives a bit of expression too! like if the character is sad, the hair becomes flat and droopy alittle, without losing the initial shape, and if they are happy it starts to bounce, and become really lively! thats just what i notice XD

What attracted me to not only your art but Ginjaninja’s, Daidus’, Sultan sketches’ (and even CDawg VA’s 😂) is how *CLEAN* your drawings look on top of the awesome quality content you put out as well such as stories, discussions with other artists or people in general, fun little contests which are super fun to watch and enjoyable (with Connor and Daidus for exemple) and just the fact that you are very likable and nice people! That’s what makes me (and many other people) enjoy watching your videos and appreciating your art while acknowledging the time and effort spent and the love you poured into those incredibly sweet drawings.

Some extra tips that I've heard:
1. Looking up references of actual human faces also helps if you wanna work on where everything is placed and how different parts of the face react to each other.
2. If you have an idea specific way a character looks, make style guide and take notes on how you want everything to look. This helps with keeping everything consistent.
Thank you for letting us see some of your process. I really want to draw more and I tend to always use the same smiling expression so this really helps🤗

I know I'm late but some art advise that I taught myself is eyelids. A wide eyed expression would have the eyelids more down and less visible while a calmer expression would have the eyelids more above the eye. (I hope this make sence)
Before watching this video I could only draw a emotionless face but now I’m going crazy with all the emotions I’m able to draw thanks to THIS video. Thanks a lot for this tutorial I needed it.
