The Mazda looks so much better
Easy choice for me. I would take the 3. The Mazda appeals much more in so many ways. A car that appeals to both head and heart.
I just bought a Mazda3 hatch last year and couldn't be more happy. I put in many hours of research and decided that it would be cheaper to repair and is more reliable than the Golf. I originally wanted the Golf as well, and I would still consider getting one in the future.
In the end, both are great cars; Just expect to put a little more money into the Golf over the life of the car.
Hi, what issues did you have?
Funny you guys mention reliability and build quality. My wife has a 2010 Mazda CX-7 w/ 2.5 4-cyl (non-turbo). It has about 75,000 miles on it, and to this day, not a SINGLE issue has arisen. It is a lot of fun to drive, handles well, gets decent gas mileage (not great compared to newer cars), and it doesn't have a single squeak or rattle in its body. The thing is a tank.
Not discrediting the VW, but I highly doubt VW makes a more reliable car.
My brother had a 72 beetle all the way until 2001 when he crashed it
We have had a Miata and now a 3 and have had zero issues with either cars. Fun to drive and very reliable.
I'm completely agree with you. I have a 2015 Mazda 3 iTouring w/ 2.5L 4-cyl and the reliability is pretty amazing! Its response is very impressive and its fuel consumption too. The interiors makes you feel very comfortable and as if you were in a luxurious car. Basically, I love the product. Golf is a very ugly car.
Carlos Roche Well of course reliability is going to be good the car is probably less than one year old, your comment is irrelevant.
+Mad Pistol Hi.. i'm driving VW 6 year's for now,and it work's like a Swiss watch.. reliable car. And my brother also drives German car; Opel astra and also quality and reliable car.. by the way Mazda look's beautiful, design is great..
Golf=headroom and ride
Mazda3=gorgeous styling, Headsup display, adaptive cruise, paddle shifters, 18inch rims
The question here is do you want to risk buying a VW with all its past history of problems. Mazda's are tops in reliability...even Consumers reports agrees.
Wow, it's gotta be the first time ever that any automotive journalist chose comfort and premium feel over sportiness. I love it when reviewers can comment and recommend cars from a consumer point of view. Good job, guys.
I think they chose that because the golf isn't exactly a slouch in the sportiness department. It can do it all.
I've owned an 03' jetta, and an 01' Protege. My Jetta's transmission cooler decided to give out at 80k miles causing damage to the transmission and it would have cost me too much $ to repair it. I also had to replace the water pump shortly before that and the gas mileage was more like that of a v6. I took over my Wife's Protege and got her a 2010 Camry. That Protege ran untill 175k no major issues and all the electronics worked. I just recently traded the Protege in for a 2012 Mazda 3 Hatch after the protege required struts, cv joints, and tires. It all hit at the same time and if I had the money to fix the car I would have, however I was able to get into a newer, safer mazda 3 with no money down. And the 3 is beautiful, runs great. With all that being said the reliability of Mazda is what made my decision for me and because of my Jetta I didn't even consider VW
The Mazda is really good looking in my opinion, The Golf is about a boring as you can get, especially on the front end.
How much they pay buddy.
Especially in the inside, I would say.
Mazda has really stepped up their game
Mazda look's amazing.. beautiful car..
I was this close in getting me a 2015 vw golf. I got me an online subscription to Consumer Reports. According to CR, the Golf "spotty reliability" is one of its greatest weakness. The models 2015-16 are bad, the 2017 is ok and the 2018 is really bad.
I have checked almost all vw golf/gti/jetta CZcams reviews for models 2015-18 and very few talk about the car's reliability. Yes, they are nice to drive but what's the point of buying a 3-4 year headache. Shouldn't "reliability" of a car be a part of a review?🔬🔬🔬
it will never be part of a review because reviews are only about initial impressions. Only surveys asking real life owners can really reveal what a car is like to live with everyday. I got the mazda3 because of consumer reports reliability as well.
As a Mazda employee and former Volkswagen employee I am quite disappointed with this test. Its almost like it was a Volkswagen bias test because you didn't touch on the benefits that true Mazda owners love. Here we strive for a fun economical drive. When someone is buying a car price is a huge factor and our vehicle is going to save you money down the road. When comparing labour and part costs Mazda is much much more affordable than vw and I have experienced this first hand being an owner of both. Our transmissions require no maintenance and we have a timing chain not a timing belt. You were touching up on how much space is unavailable in the Mazda in terms of back seat and head room. I am confident that our vehicle is still more comfortable to be in because we actually raise that front seat a little so when there is a passenger in the back you can get your feet comfortably under the seat for that little extra room to spread out and it is proven that customers enjoy that more than a little extra head room. And overall if you were that concerned about space enough to let that be the deciding factor you should have touched up on the fact that Mazda has a sedan model as well and in terms of cubic centimetres it actually has more space than the sport you were showing so we are more versatile and have more models to fit anyone's lifestyle. Finally the road noise. We appeal to customers who want a light vehicle for better fuel economy and a responsive drive. In return and our customers understand that they will be getting a little bit of road noise because we have less material between the driver and the road. I recommend an undercoat for anyone who this problem is a big issue for and even with the undercoat we will still be less expensive than Volkswagen. And on a related topic even though we have lighter and less material in the car as Volkswagen we still have a better safety rating which you didn't even touch up on which I am disappointed because that should be the most important part. Overall the vw might seem like the better choice at first glace but when you actually take some time and research what each brand is appealing to you will find that the Mazda will always be the better vehicle because we appeal to practical matters such as cost and drive where vw appeals to autobahn drivers which I will never get to drive on.
I've never worked at VW but I do work at Mazda and can tell these cars are built to a price. Everytime our detailer does washes for cars for the showroom or a customer delivery, all the exterior lights like the tailights fog up and get water in them. Our dealer and others in surrounding areas have gotten numerous complaints of faulty lights and cracked lenses due to the water. Mazda has recognized this issue but still isn't updating the design. And if you crank up the bass on the bose system, the doors rattle like they have gravel in them. The VW's fender system is miles better and it helps that the doors are much better built!
I'm a very open minded guy. I have bought a ton off different make cars and loved them all. I only buy whats best for my needs and wants. And I was about to buy a Mazda 3 GT but drove a base golf for fun and found it more rewarding and much nicer interior. It's a hands down win for me. I'm taking delivery of it today!!!
Brandon Friesen well i have the same mazda 3 above with undercoat, the road noise is barely heard, that is true and it is recommended. for the bose system, i am not hearing any door rattling at all even i put it on the maximum. the interior quality is solid built and really up the market. the leather is soft and have a nice feel about it. I found that is even better than the golf. I choose the mazda over the golf after I test drove them both. I am not sure about the fog problems on the headlight tho. But seriously, if u talk about handling, the focus is still the best fun to drive hatch.
jamesgjt I will agree that the Focus is the most fun. The Golf may be 3rd out of these three, but it will hold it's value better, it's better on fuel, especially with the TDI, its more practical, it's built better, and with the base car, it has best in class value.
Jared Germs VW doesn't use a timing belt anymore either. Also, no transmission "requires no maintenance." That's called planned obsolesce so they can sell you a new one.
jamesgjt Where would I go to get the undercoat?
Close call, but as soon as you add reliability into the mix, Mazda is streets ahead. Reviewers don't tend to include reliability stats.
My dad had a 2015 gti and I had a 2011 Mazda3 2.5 with 70k miles on it(before it got totaled at 83k). My car never had a single problem after I ran it very hard and his car started having transmission problems at around 10k miles. The reliability of the brands is not even close, Mazda outdoes VW in reliability any day of the week.
You're wrong. Mazda is the better car in every way, than VW.
40 Roller oh I understand, I loved my dads VW and had nothing against it even if it wasn't as reliable because it was a blast. There's are perks to either car and you have to take either into consideration when choosing a car. I now have a 2016 Mazda because someone totaled my 2011 and I love it just as much as my other one or the GTI but it would never touch a gti in a race.
(laughs in mazdapeed3)
40 Roller
I owned a 2004 brand new Golf for 7 years. Drove it for 120K Km and never had an issue with the engine, gearbox, nor the suspension. Only needed to replace the pads, water pump, and some minor parts. But I gotta say, VW is poor on features and value for money, whereas Hyundai for instance is an insane value with surprisingly good quality overall.
What sold me is watching these cars handle the curves; the Mazda took them like a pro and the VW weeble wobbled the whole way....plus I personally can't stand a busy interior. I like how my Mazda 6 handles, looks sharp, and keeps it simple, and if I ever see rust (on my 6th one in 20 years and never have, but....), I'll spray some rust proof and touch up paint and keep it moving.
Would be a very hard choice for me with these two, but if I was offered the mazda hatch I'd probably go with that.
Its simple, Mazda 3 is way better, period
It seems these guys didn't factor looks into the final score, cause the VW is ugly as.
yep talk about boring
i suppose it's a matter of opinion but objectively the golf isn't ugly, it uses conservitive styling and is plain.
The mazda on the other hand is just plain ugly, that filter feeder mouth, ew.
10babiscar Objectively the golf is ugly, not to mention incredibly boring. Good I suppose if you're an undercover detective for 80 years old
G_Morto I just bought a 2016 golf, I personally like the look its not boring, it's conservative, it has some nice lines to it. I don't like flashy cars either so that's why.
Yeah! It's an ugly as.
I researched both vehicles last year and went to people I know who owned both mazda3's and Golf's for sometime, along with other make ad models of cars. When it came down to reliability the Mazda wins easily, The amount of electrical problems with Golf's was a big problem, The earlier models of Auto's in Golf's had major transmission problems, were the mazda's had none. Mazda still use a 6 speed gearbox not a piece of garbage CVT transmission like a lot of other Japanese manufactures. The Mazda had no complaints by owners over the years they had owned them. I opted for the Mazda3 and have never looked back it is a fantastic vehicle and shows longevity unlike the Golf's that had been towed and repair way to much for my liking. Golf's can't handle Australian conditions. I don't know if the US gets a better quality vehicle but the Aussie one's are no good.
+rslcoach VW gets a terrible rap in Aus.
+rslcoach If you are the sought of person that would happily pay a dominatrix
thousands of dollars to smear your scrotum with wasabi before nailing it to a park bench in full public view while certain car industry C.E.O's spit on you before leaving you stranded and out of pocket the Golf is clearly the only choice in Australia for you.
Let us not forget Diesel Gate.
+Harley Zheng No one cares about emissions.. Just for tax reasons.

Japanese Engineering is always best...
maybe the Japanese are more reliable but when it comes to the feel of the drive, nothing beats the German superiority

If reliability is counted, the Mazda would likely come out on top.
Until it rusts to the core. This model is less 2 years old and rust starts to appear (after winter).
Tbh my friend's mazda started to rust and it was only three years old..
Salty environment?
scanspeak00 But mazdas usually get rusted quicker for some reason, I see them all the times. But, I like the mazda 3
shawn edward Current Mazda 3 is on the market for less than 3 years and there are first reports about rust.
I test drove a lot of cars on my quest to buy a new car. The Mazda 3 looks premium and drives premium. That's all there is to say and why I ultimately bought one.
Hey its 2021 I saw this vid back in 2017 and despite your recommendation, I went for the mazda. And I just have to say, Im 100% happy with my decision. I got the sedan and after 95k miles its still a very good car. The interior held up well and I have a labrador. Just got it detailed and it looks barely more than a year old. Next year im up for a new car guess what im getting
Did you go with another Mazda3?
Was price factored in? Mazda3 4-door starts at $17K while the Golf 4-door starts at $21K. In the compact category value is probably the most important factor.
What is Mazda 3 4door ? have motor of 4 door ? 2017 Volkswagen Golf 1.0 TSI 85hp € 21.120 2016 Mazda 3 SkyActiv-G 1.5 € 21.600 I drive Golf its please let me out know I drive Mazda 3 much space then VW! Mazda 3 is big but VW is small !
bring reliability into the mix and Mazda wins hands down! VWs are notoriously problematic in terms of electrics and worse yet, those dodgy DSG transmissions. A friend's 1 year old Jetta is back at the dealer for a month because the mechatronic unit inside the transmission failed... after just ONE YEAR!
No thanks, I'll take the far more stylish, loaded and more fun to drive Mazda.
That's why you grow some balls and get a manual.
SlipknotMaggot0526 Don't forget the rest of the car. VWs have cheap, cheap plastic mounts and handles that eventually break from long term use. On top of that, mine leaked every fluid known to man.
SlipknotMaggot0526 you think that's the solution? Clearly you're missing the point. If VW can't make good transmissions, what makes you think they make manual gearboxes that last? Obviously at the root of VW's reliability issues is poor engineering and substandard component quality, period. What's the point of a manual when the rest of the car is rubbish anyway?! I love German cars, but VWs... no thanks! Of these two I'm sticking with Mazda
Agree, Mazda is now independent from Ford so that curse is now gone, Mazda is now reliable and has the lowest cost to own award from Kelley Blue Book 2 years in a row. Yeah the styling on the 3 makes the Golfs look like it has no style whatsoever, plus the 3 is more fun to drive so it's Mazda 3 for me all the way.
Golf 1.8 TSI uses old style automatic gearbox with torque converter.
I'm for the Mazda 3
I'd go with the Mazda 3. Much more stylish, has a USB port, better mileage, better interior design, sportier and better handling.
Actually the Golf has better chassis tuning and a sportier suspension compared to the Mazda3. You'd know these if you've actually driven both.
Sooo you would bought a YUGO if it had USB port???
You guys are true professionals. I love the way you do reviews .
I test drove both and ended up with the Mazda 2.5 petrol. The sporty steering and styling was what won me over but I have to say that after owning this car for a while the tyre noise and stiff suspension on long trips does become tiresome. There was a sturdiness about the Golf that the Mazda can't match also, just closing the doors is a constant reminder. The Golf would have been a no brainer if it wasn't so bland.
The Golf is the car my grandfather would design ... Come on, can they get any more boring??
Mazda wins hands down...
She sells seashells by the seashore.
The shells she sells are surely seashells.
So if she sells shells on the seashore,
I'm sure she sells seashore shells.
Lol, that's cold. But ultimately a legit point. If you want to do informative videos, well... all I can say is not everyone is cut out to be and onscreen presenter. For me it was hard to get passed it, and made it hard to pay attention to the information presented.
Darude - Sandstorm
This is nowhere near worth pointing out. He gave a solid review, was well spoken, and was fairly engaging as a presenter. You're just being a major douche.
mistertee While being mean to someone with a speech flaw is cruel, it is kind of a bad call on their part to hire someone who has lisp to be a presenter. Lisp is curable with a little bit of speech therapy, and I doubt auto journalists without speech defects are so rare to find. I don't want to sound mean to the guy, I just want to point out that demanding a better presenter isn't something unreasonable.
Joseph Ebner *get past it
that mazda 3 is hot..
I own the 2015 sadan version and wow I didn't expect it to be such a fun car, I got the base model with 158 hp and 158 pounds torque and the car can pull. My favorite thing about this car is that it has such an elegant but sporty look, interior is nice but if you have the money I would recommend the leather, probably one of the best leather interior in a economical car you can find.
A few comments below this one talk about build quality and reliability. I have just traded my 2010 VW GTi for the 2016 SP25GT. Why? Well, the water pump, the power steering pump, the engine pretensioner, the gearbox AND the clutch pack...and the final straw that broke me was the blown turbo. All of this after just 6 years of mostly gentle driving with it being regularly serviced by the dealer. That's nearly 20k of mechanical repairs and maybe 6 weeks or so off the road. True, most of it was repaired under warranty but that isn't the point. I adored my Golf - the swoosh of the drivetrain, the seats, the balance of the chassis - but it just kept on kicking me in the guts. Such a pity. My ownership experience with the VW was simply appalling.
I know its so sad that for some reason the european brands are so good at making great looking, and driving cars but can't make them reliable.
@@paulvela1369 i thin they have improved in recent years
@@MrWalker1000 certainly improved but still not Japanese car reliable.
@@paulvela1369 true and I didn't want to risk it so I made sure my car was made in Japan.
Those seats in the Mazda remind me of the Saab 9-3SS/SC Aero seats. And I love it!
Correct me if mistaken, but the WV is made in Mexico where the Jetta is made. The Mazda3 is still made in Japan, I have a Mazda3 so I know. Driving the Mazda is fun, especially with a manual shifter and those seats are just gorgeous. Every car is good when they're new, Time is the hardest tester, so I'd like to see how these two age and than do another compare video, like 9 years down the road.
I'm 6'1 and own a 2015 Mazda 3.
This vehicle has tons of headroom and legroom to spare.
You guys are slowly becoming one of my favorite automotive journalists. Keep up the great work!!!
Best unbiased review I have ever seen on these 2 cars.
Why is everyone fighting over which one is the best? I like them both, i own the gold my bro owns the mazda 3, they both got strengths and wraknesses and appeal to different groups... my brother and I like to talk about how they are different but find them both to be awesome and still quite similar in many ways. It comes down to this for most car enthusiasts, do you want a car that is more connected to the road but is less refined in comfort (mazda 3) or a car that is more refined in comfort but has less connected feel due to the softer suspension(golf). One thing i can tell you however after driving both (and im not biased about this, just honest) is that the golf, even tho softer, is stil faster and can handle equally well when driven agressivly, however it does not feel as agressive as the mazda in the process. I own the 2012 base 2.5L engine golf (170hp originally and 182 after some modding) my brother owns the 2014 skyactive mazda 3 hatchback 2.0L (150 hp originally). You can ask me any further questions on other differences or similarities cause i only skinmed over performance and feel, all i can say is that they are both great cars for their category.
Bay Area Touge - Paul122157 sooo
to this date
which car showed more reliability?
#1 reason to buy a VW Golf instead of some other hatchback like the Mazda3 or Hyundai Elantra GT = LOW BELTLINE of the rear doors. That means that if you carry small kids then in the Golf your kids will actually be able to SEE OUT OF THE REAR WINDOWS in a Golf, while in other hatchbacks all they get to see is Sky because the beltline around the rear door windows is so high on those cars.
No mention about the reliability and maintenance cost? I'm currently driving a Mazda Astina 323 BA, 98', it just hit 100k on the clock. Last week it went in for a service and once again, not a single thing wrong. VW is far more expensive to repair and maintain. Not to mention as far as audio goes, the stock speakers in the 98 Astina are incredible. Still holds true to this day, with a family members Mazda3 having some fantastic base/quality.
My Golf has a USB port where that cable is. And adaptive cruise control. So yes you can. (but I don't have a rear view camera or sunroof.).
Love the design of the Mazda.
MAZDA FTW......the Kodo design.....double thumbsup
Definitely Mazda !
Thank you, guys! This particular comparison test was very useful for me. I need a car for long-distance business trips, and I had these two on my short list. You have convinced me that I can drive past the Mazda dealership and head straight for the nearest VW sales rep.
2016 VW Golf S has more standard equipment. Standard USB port, just plug in your regular phone cable. 6.5" display. And Apple Carplay, which will put Apple Maps on the infotainment display, as well as Audible Apps and easy access to Siri. The ride comfort on Los Angeles ragged roads and freeways, really sets it apart.
I just bought the 2016 Golf TSI S with Sunroof. Your review really helped a lot in my choice. Thanks!
Mazda 3 the best
vw= classic..simple but never out of style.
Any of these 2 is better than Corolla
TekGeekHD, I agree with you. But for a start most people still do not know how to drive a stick shift. Second, over time it becomes tedious as you age, especially in large cities. Last of all, the software in the automatics is so good now, that they usually get better gas mileage than the equivalent stick. I'm about to get a new automatic(Mazda3), but I won't trade my stick shift in for it because it is so much fun. But I can tell it is getting more tiresome for me to drive. The best thing about a stick now is a lot of young people don't drive them, so often they are more difficult to steal.
My personal experiences about German and Japanese cars are; German cars are good before you reach 90000 miles. After 90000 miles, you will need lots of money to fix the problems. For Japanese cars, they have no problems until 150000 miles.
Depends...
Mazda all the way.
You guys who love the Mazda sure have your tastes in your arse. I've driven both these vehicles and the first thing I noticed in the Mazda is the road noise. Mazda has had this issue forever and have never come to grips with it. The next thing was the lack of power, I had a Honda Civic gen8 and it had more power than the Mazda and it's a 1.8 vs the Mazda 2.0. To say the ride is stiff in the Mazda is an understatement, I'd say ride like a go-cart more like it. Here in Australia we travel very long distances on poor roads and I just don't how anybody would choose a Mazda3, the road noise and the ride would kill me.
Oh - oh that's a lot of guys 😮😄
I personally cannot stand these reviews because they are always comparing over priced press version cars that no one who is actually buying a compact in the USA would actually buy.
I was in the market for both these cars and test drove base models of the 3 hatch and the Golf. I also work for a rental car company and frequently drive Focuses, Cruzes, Corollas, and Elantras. Ultimately I went with the Golf over all those cars, especially over the three. Things you have to consider with the base models:
1. Golf ha smore horsepower (almost 20 more) in base trim and a lot more torque than the 3 does with from what I saw was pretty similar fuel economy based on how I drive and where I live (New Jersey). Golf's motor also sounded like a car motor, the Mazda's sounded a bit like a really good lawn mower engine. Light years better than Focus or Corolla, but not as good as Golf. I never drove a 3 with the 2.5L engine.
2. Golf gives you leatherette seats (if you can honestly tell the difference then you must be fed from a silver spoon) while the Mazda gets you cloth, which are infinitely more comfortable and way easier to clean than the base Mazda's cloth seats.
3. Golf has a bigger roof line, more headroom, and a way more comfortable back seat both in terms of leg room and seating position.
4. Golf has a much more compliant suspension while still having a chassis that is just as planted, if not more planted, than the Mazda's.
5. Golf is way better for users or portable GPS units such as myself, with a lot more room on the dash to place a Garmin on top of (I will never use in car navigation).
The Mazda beats the Golf out in terms of styling (it really is gorgeous inside and out while the Golf is much more staid, though hardly ugly), automatic transmission (it's one of the few non CVT automatics that seems okay with going slow or leaving from stoplights), and infotainment system (Volkswagen's voice commands system seems to be unable to recognize certain people's names, a problem I intend on rectifying during my next service visit). I still feel the Golf is a way more well rounded car than the 3, though I would not fault anyone for buying the Mazda of the Volkswagen.
Just bought a 2015 6 speed. With the 2.0 engine. Won't lie even my friends 2002 golf TDI feels faster. But it's still quiet and reliable which is good.
I'm back for 2015 and better than ever too!
Eight years later and my 2015 is still running strong few chips on the hood, other than that I replaced a belt tensioner and front wheel bearings and I am at 117,000 miles
I sat in a Mazda 3 at the dealer. I am 6'2" and couldn't get in the car without breaking my legs. So I found the little guys review skewed. I hate getting in a car where my head can hit the headliner. Sat in the golf and could get in and out easily. I sat in a lot of different cars and I am amazed that they seem to be built for little people. I found it is where they put the dor pillar and how big the opening is. I couldn't even get in the Nissan juke the opening was so small.
Zach Payne i'm 6'3+ and have yet to find a car that i can't fit in comfortably (ok maybe a 90's Accent i test drove). The seats adjust in modern cars. I tend to recline the seat a little if headroom is an issue.
Honest review..here. Test drove both cars. Absolutely loved both..but Volkswagen was a bit more responsive and sporty with its 1.8tsi and i needed a bit more cargo space so i ended up getting Volkswagen Jetta 1.8tsi. O have already owned a Mazda Protege ES 2.0, Mazda 3 and a Mazda 6(all early-mid 2000s). But those Mazda's are no match to this year's Mazda 3.
Mazda 3, much better looking and more reliable! And no cheatingsoftware.
after a test drive with the golf and mazda 3, I realised that where the Mazda 3 still makes so much in 6th gear at about 60mph, I didn't even realise I was going 65mph in 4th gear with the golf and I was only at 2000 rpm. so you may brag about having a 6 speed transmission but it is not as practical and well engineered as the golf 5 speed. but when I step on the gaz pedal of the golf, I still get a really nice noise from the 1.8 l tsi that has proven it's reliability over the years.
+Charles-David Bérubé
Is it in the US the Golf only have a 5 speed? I noticed a lot of stuff in the video, I found confusing. First of all, the Golf VII came out in 2012, so comparing a 4 year old car to a 2 year old, isn't quite what I could call fair.
The screen the in the video (On the golf) is the smallest you can get, go for the Discover pro, and you got 8", so that point i really dont get in this comparison.
Ohh well back to the transmission. Here in Europe the Golf has a DSG transmission with 7 speeds (if you dont go for the Manual with 6 speeds, which in the norm here in Denmark, just because of the price (its a 4000 Dollar ekstra if you want the DSG).
Charles-David Bérubé Ahh Sorry mate! Guess the last name should have tipped me of ;)
But yeah, we are just waiting for the 2016 facelift of the Golf VII now, and perhaps the Golf 8 in 2018 :)
But go look at the Golf GTE, and you should have an idea of how I think the Golf should look like (well with leather seats, and the sunroof as extras). But agian the 8" screen is a extra aswell, so perhaps its not featured on the videos here on youtube.
Noticed you said 1.8 TSI aswell? Only engine to go over 1.4 here in Europe are the GTI and the R model..Else its everything from 1.0 to 1.4..So atleast you get bigget engines :P
Per Andersen we get pretty much the same engine that Audi uses so yeah I guess we have a more powerfull engine.
well its the same over here, guess the cars just use smaller engines due to emisions
I swear to god no hatchback ever should come in an automatic or CVT or anything automated, just a straight up stick shift, thats what invented this damn category of fun to drive compact cars!
that's what hot hatchbacks are for. Standard hatchbacks are often family cars, which is often automatic.
Hot hatches for enthusiasts, yes. Regular hatches for normal people, a choice is good.
you guys are right, but you know what I meant :P I absolutely can't wait for the VW Golf R400 which was shown at the LA auto show earlier this month to be released to the public, and I pray for it to come to the US with a stick shift manual! :) fingers crossed
TekGeekHD Just pray that it'll come to the US in the first place, Volkswagen said it'll only come in manual.
IMO no car should come in an automatic or CVT or anything automated.
I like both of these cars a lot. I do find them both to be pretty expensive, though. I think the VW is just classier. Maybe a bit more subtle exterior, but still classier, and a beautiful interior. And at 2 Grand less, the VW is an easy choice for me. "Fender" Audio is so cheesy though. Blaupunkt would be so rad.
***** Yeah, I had a like a mid 90's Jetta back then. It was great at first but started falling apart. Like the bumpers would fall off those cars. Then it needed a fuel pump, I think, and they told me it was INSIDE of the friggin' gas tank, so they'd have to cut into it or replace it altogether or some shit. What a pain. It did drive nice and had more class than a Japanese equivalent at the time, but yeah, you're right. I hope the newer ones are better, though?
Plus, once I bump up to anything near this price bracket again for a new car, I'll be getting a BMW again. I leased an '08 X3 for 3 years and never had one single issue, plus all maintenance was covered for free.
The Fender Audio is miles better than the Bose system in the 3.
Brandon Friesen The audio system will outlast the car but when I look into buying a car, I purchase for the the whole car and just not one component. If i want audio only, I would just buy a set of the most expensive headphone and just take public transportation. IMHO.
Atrip I didn't bring durability and longevity into this. I'm just saying on a pure sound system comparison, the fender system in the golf is hands down better than mazda. Fender even made demands that they redesign some pillars in the mk7 golf because the acoustics wouldn't be up to their standards.
Why can't we all be friends!
The thing that sucks about the mazda 3 now is you can get a mazda6 touring with leatherette thats larger for almost the same price. The 3 is overpriced now. The 6 is the better bang for the buck.
+Nick Olsen depends where you live, in my country entry level 6 is about 7000$ more expensive than full spec 3
Sounds like a fair assessment for these two.
We should throw RELIABILITY in there, Mazda +1 I almost never seen a Mazda broken down on the side of street, there are countless times I see VW waiting for a tow truck.
It looks like you shot the Golf's interior segment in black and white, then added the colors later.
Test drove both. Mazda was loud and imo felt flimsy. It was also cramped. Golf is like a sophisticated driving machine with quiet ride , great sound system and great space.
I used to have a 2009 Jetta and 2010 GTI. I HATED the seat tilt angle. Too much tilt backwards.
Jesus what kinds of insane features do these guys get. I've never seen this cars go for any where near 30,000.
I know I'm late to this party but what about the $2k difference in price...advantage VW.
VW = sensibile,
Mazda = fun and stylish
VW = sensible, refined and suprisingly fun.
The Volkthwagen Golf is buthting through the compact thegment!
Test drove the Mazda 3 and the Golf and I'm proud to say that the Golf is the one sitting in my driveway.
+Matt Alexander Same, i liked the Mazda... but noisy as hell above 30mph and just wasn't as nice to drive.
+neon snow The 2012 is not the one in this video, this one is a lot better.
+Monkeybox Gaming The 2016 model is a lot quiter.
+neon snow Well the 2012 model was pretty old already and was made when they were still owned by Ford. Mazda has improved a lot since Ford sold their shares in the company and the newest vehicles are really good looking and fun to drive.
+Matt Alexander me too! The Golf imo was better in every way..
VW golf looks duller than ever. I fall asleep looking at a golf they are stuck in the past with their designs
A lil dull on looks but so satisfying to drive! Love my sportwagen
I don't like the Steering Wheel on the new 2015 golf. 2012 version was much better. I also likes how on the 2012 the window & door controls were upwards on an angle.....now they've gone back to flat.
I guess the big question is how is the 3s reliability. I am considering one, and I will never buy a VW again. I have had nothing but problems and the new design is super boring
TheSleve22 Mazdas are very reliable
depends on year. the new generation with skyactive are great. the older generation, using a variant of the ford duratec(read 'ecoboost') is good, but has the occasional minor issue.(i.e. transmission, usually)
what year vw did u own?
@@MrWalker1000 2007 Jetta. LOL to be honest I saw the new Golf's that will be coming out and they look very intriguing. I bought a new Honda Accord two years ago. I really like it and have had no problems with it, but its a bit big compared to what I had before.
@@stevecontos3317 yeah it's surprisingly big yet its what people buy the most. This is why I went for the Mazda3
Although I am a life long devoted VW/Audi/Porsche owner/enthusiast, I still believe that the DSG = the *Don't Shift Good* Transmission (which are still having Mechatronic Unit failures) are inferior to their manual transmission counterparts. Besides, you cannot skip gears with any DCT (i.e.DSG) car like you can with a manual tranny. You must engage every gear while up or downshifting. (Say from 5th to 2nd, or 4th to 6th) and that SUCKS! Manual transmissions go into the gear YOU choose instantly! Anyone defending DSG's or the base Automatic Trans found in this tested Golf probably do not know how to drive a manual-transmission car, and thus have no idea what they are missing. And for all the kiddies that prefer STYLE over REFINEMENT, you'll learn. *Long Live VAG Automobiles with MT's!*
Nice to see you guys using the gas and automatic Golf in this comparo. Too many diesel and GTI videos out there.
Too bad the 1.4 petrol is an unreliable and slow engine, the diesels are way better(except the 2.0 petrol), especially the 2.0 Tdi which has a lot of low end torque.
Annoying how much cheaper you get Golfs than we do as you are not having to pay for high "made in Germany" production costs. Wish they would make some right hand drive ones in your factories over there and sell them in the UK
I'd get a lower model/mid level (manual) Mazda 6 with the 2.5L for the same price point as these and solve the lack of interior space in the 3 but still get a fun, 4 door, daily driver that gets decent gas mileage. Rear seats fold down in the 6 for extra utility with decent trunk space.
Good point, I am thinking about that option, but the 6 just isn't as fun to drive. But yes, for me it is between the Mazda 6 and either the GTI or Golf SEL, all very good choices indeed!
i have nothing to say. both of the cars are brilliant but sure, every German car will win a Japanese car. also the golf is more comfort and Even cheaper than the mazda 3. in a lower cost you will get every feature you want in your car, it starts with a dual climate control until Automatic break.
everyone, need a family car but still comfort and beuty? the golf is your car.
Mazda is far away the best.
i really love this channel
4:00 "If you were a bit bigger than me, your hair might start rubbing against the head liner."
*camera angle changes and shows about 5 inches additional head room above his head.*
Same thing i was thinking! I was like WTH!
I thought the same thing. Maybe he was alluding to the back seat head room. I just test drove the Golf GTI today. I cannot believe how roomy it was. I am 6'1 210 lbs, and I had about 2 inches extra head room in back seat, and 4 inches between my knees and the back of the front seat, and that was with the front seat back far enough for a 6' 2" in front very comfortably. Pretty damn impressive! You can easily fit four 6'2" guys in the Golf.
VW is a good brand, I have seen some of the mazda speed3 and to me they are one of the best good looking hatch back
6:07 - What?? You don't get Adaptive Cruise Control or Blind spot assist?
These are either standard or an optional extra on European versions. :)
Would be nice if the camera man got some shots of the rear of the vehicle...
4:47 the dash looks like it doesn't line up with the center console. I'm sure that's a design cue, but it looks awful.
I noticed and was thinking the same thing too.
makes it easier to use, looks badass
mbrunnme The incomplete looking dash? They could've angled it + made it all fit.
I’m 6 foot in the 2014 Mazda sedan GX and my head is at least 3 inches from the roof with the seat on lowest setting
I'm sorry but any vehicle that looks like Toaster shouldn't even be considered. The Mazda 3 is very stylish while the Volkswagen Golf should actually be named the Volkswagen Golf-Cart.
Jordan Gehlhausen But that's like.....your opinion.
Isaac Fox Lol Sure it is. But one cannot deny the shape or silhouette of the Volkswagen Golf that looks rather boxy in comparison to a Mazda 3 hatchback.
Jordan Gehlhausen Sure but it's still a matter of opinion. I like the studios more masculine look of the Golf better. I kinda don't like the rear of the 3.
touché
the VW DSG transmission ussd in Golf is failing in warmer climate like in South East Asia. German quality is a myth like aryan super race.
The Mazda is cheaper and delivers quality and value for money with driver satisfaction for the middle class.
wonder how the 2015 focus would compare to these two
Say it with me now, "Mawz-Duh"
Excellent video!
but the hard plastics on the doors, the cheap fealing of the seats and overall the lame trunk space make it quite dissapointing.
And, you guys, forgot to mentioned that VW offers diesel and electric engines.
More choices - more customers :)
I worked for a company that have both 2015 versions of each car, and if I had to use my own money, I would buy the VW. I don't think the interior quality is the same personally. I felt the Mazda used cheaper plastics. As well, the VW had a lot of dampened controls, which I thought was a nice touch.
Krean Naidoo true. sit in both and the vw is nicer
+Krean Naidoo yea they are good at cheating.
+Hing holo my comment was made in February? I personally would still buy the TSI regardless of the scandal. At the end of the day, it still feels more premium
Krean Naidoo yup.. Being unreliable does feel premium doesnt it?
+Hing holo better than the pile of rust I'd have lol
