I would think you would be able to grow rhubarb in Iceland. Then you can make your own pie. How do you connect the Yule Lads with Christmas, and when does Odin come in to the picture?...............I know it may be hard to put these together every day, but there are a lot of us out there for which this is the highpoint of every Christmas. Maybe even better than getting presents????

Oh yes, rhubarb we indeed grow quite a bit of, and my family always made rhubarb jam when I was a kid.
The Yule Lads aren't connected directly, as such, they are just these troll-kin lads living in the mountains who are drawn to human settlement by the hustle and bustle and cooking smells of christmas preparation. They may have done so during the old Jól / Yul solstice festival back in norse heathen times, but they didn't stop being drawn out of hiding when the festival changed to having christian connotations.
That third point, about putting these together everyday... I'll cover that in tomorrow's video ;)

I have a collection of Yule Lad ornaments and every day at this time of year I hang one up from the kitchen light fixture. It's getting cramped up there. Where Gattepefur hangs he's not sniffing the doorway but GLUGGAGÆGIR's backside. Oh the embarrassment.

🤣... classic "yule-laddery". Nice to hear they have extended their reach this far west

Strawberry Rhubarb Pie is a thing here in the US. I love Rhubarb 👍🏻

One of the things in general I love to have when visiting the US... pies. We don't have them in our pastry tradition here (most likely due to a historical unavailability of fresh fruit), but I haven't tasted a pie I didn't like yet :)

I was wondering why you didn’t have a tree all this time! Thanks for explaining. Makes sense if you want to keep the needles from piling up on top of presents before the big day! When I lived in Hawaii, the trees were obviously imported and a huge mess by Christmas. Does Iceland grow their own trees or import them? In my travels on the island I haven’t seen a lot of greenery so just curious. 🎄😊

Some may be imported, but I believe the majority are locally grown for this purpose specifically. You can buy them from the forestry association here in Iceland, where the profits of each one are used to grow more than one tree, so it contributes to the reforesting effort.

@@ivargu I love that! Buy a tree and plant a tree! I felt guilty getting a real one and have resorted to the fake version the last few years for that very reason! Every time I learn something new about Iceland I love it more. 😍🇮🇸
