    Hi everyone! My finger knit blanket has become the most popular video on the channel and I receive a lot of questions regarding it. Here is a collection of the most frequently asked questions but if I've missed anything, let me know! If you have any project requests, please drop them in the comments. I just finished this blanket yesterday, before seeing this video. I looked everywhere for the Big yarn. I saw the Bernat Extra, but understood that had to do with the amount of yarn, not the size of the yarn. I found some extra thick Bernat yarn. It took exactly 3 skeins to make a 4ft by 5ft blanket. The blanket looks nice and is extremely comfortable. Thank you for these videos.

    Thank you so much for your tips on why my blanket length keeps increasing. I was knitting with my blanket ends falling off the surface I was knitting on. Hence my loops were a bit larger on the ends and there was a lot of extra space between the loops at the ends. I considered the size of the loops being larger at the ends being a cause but the spacing between the loops at the ends was the main cause. Now I am more mindful of choosing a number of stitches that fit the bed I am knitting on and bringing each loop I am doing in close to the last loop, before pulling through. This also helped with the curling of my cast on row, which I still pet down, pulling a little at the top loop down the braid to the bottom to ensure completely straight edges! Now my skeins go a lot farther too being that I'm actually seeing the width increasing instead of the length! lol I'm so much happier with the results, which dare I say, looks professional!

    Thank you for making this video! I do have a question on how many stitches in a chain for standard size blankets? If I measure the chain when I start it'll be the size I want but by the time I finish the blanket it's changed to a longer size. Any idea what I'm doing wrong?

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před 2 lety +2

      You’re not doing anything wrong - the growth of a blanket is natural because yarn is stretchy. Hopefully these tips I share will help keep it from doing that as much. Especially the one of keeping the yarn between loops from growing too much.
      The amount of chains you make really isn’t going to change the issue but If it’s really extreme (the growth) then maybe try less chains to start.

  • @kirat5699
    @kirat5699 Před 2 lety +2

    In the original video you said you kept the loops 1.5-2 inches and here you said you keep them 2.5-3 inches...Did you change the length to 2.5-3 because they blankets weren't straight? Which length do you recommend to make a tighter blanket that stays straight? also thank you so much for your videos!

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před 2 lety +6

      Yes I switched to 2.5 -3 because the shorter chain foundation (1.5-2 inches) was making it too tight at the beginning. So yes, I recommend doing that for a straighter edge.
      This is just referring to that initial chain to start the blanket. Otherwise , I kept the height of the loops the same (1.5-2 inches) like in the initial video. This will keep your blanket tight in a good way.
      Hope that clarifies it for you.

    @SFM1123 Před 3 měsíci

    Wonderful video! Do you have a video which shows or explains how to get a nice straight cast on chain or how to keep your cast on chain straight while making the blanket? Does it have to do with the tension used when starting the cast on chain? Any tips would be appreciated. Thank you!

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před 3 měsíci

      Other than what you’ve seen, I’d say it really comes down to tension, yes. Which is hard when you’re doing it with your fingers.!
      2 suggestions.
      Use a tape measure to help get the same length for each of your chains when casting on.
      Also, you might prefer adding your first row of loops into the back bump of the cast on chain instead of how I show in all my videos.
      This will give you more of an edge and help it look a little neater . I didn’t teach it this way because it’s a little more difficult to see where to put the loop if you’re a beginner.
      BeCozi does it this way . Check out how she does it . I think it will help .

    I asked this question on your baby blanket site, but I made the larger blanket with the Bernat Big Blanket and I am coming to the end. I did the work on a table and pulled the blanket toward me to rest on my lap and a chair and then noticed that the sides are drooping down at each bottom corner so no longer in a rectangle. Did it stretch as you say with the weight? Is there anything I can do it about. I would hate to start again as it now almost 60 inches which is what I wanted. Can you help at all with a suggestion? • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před rokem +1

      I would need the yarn on hand to make a swatch and measure but I can’t get that yarn in my local area. You have 92 yards in a ball of the extra . the Bernat blanket big has 32 yards. They both weigh the same so my guess is you’ll need more of the extra than the 5 balls I recommended.
      If you have a ball on hand and can make a swatch and weigh it then I could help you figure out how much you need from there. 💕

    How many stitches do you have in your first chain? Also, for bigger blankets, does that number change or do you just make it longer and not wider with the number that’s more than 30.

      @PlayHookywithMe  Před rokem +2

      In my first chain for what?
      If you check the description box of the blanket video, I’ve written how many chains I made for each blanket.
      The number will only change if you decide to make it wider.
      You are creating a chain for the width then working on the height by adding more skeins of yarn.
      E.g. 3ft (width) by 4ft (height)

    • @mllysmth
      @mllysmth Před rokem

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před rokem +4

      @@mllysmth if you want to make your blanket bigger , place a tape measure on the floor and keep chaining along it until you reach the width you want.
      If you don’t have a tape measure , then use a blanket that you already have and chain along the width of it to get the same sizing.
      The length of it will grow longer with each ball of yarn you add. Just keep adding yarn until you reach the length you want.

      I’m not sure what you mean? Do you mean it will be too overwhelming to learn to finger knit as well as traditional knitting?
      No. I would recommend that you look at it as two separate things.
      Finger knitting is just a fun way to make something without any prior knowledge of knitting or any fiber arts. You’re just pulling loops through loops.
      Traditional knitting will take practice and patience and it’s a great skill to achieve!

    Hi, I just about finished my first blanket. I had to restart twice before I got the hang of it. It is so much fun and just like knitting except without the needles. I had to give up knitting because I have arthritis in my thumb but with finger/hand knitting, my thumb doesn't hurt. My question - I am not going to start over now, but realized that with the first skein i used i had made the stitches a little too big on the ends. as I went along, I did get a better shape and more uniform. Is there any way to fix the larger loops on the ends? I had problems every time I started a new row. Thanks for all the tips. I have been buying yarn from Hobby Lobby but the yarn I bought also was discontinued. Fortunately, I kind of figured out how many skeins I needed so I have enough but its a pain when they discontinue yarns. :-( Sometimes you can find someone selling skeins of discontinued yarns on ebay or etsy.

      I’m so glad the finger knitting is enabling you to keep making things 😀
      Unfortunately, there’s really nothing you can do to fix the larger loops on the side after you’ve finished the blanket . I haven’t been able to figure out way.
      The only thing I can recommend for that though, is when you work on another blanket, skip that first loop on the side when you start a new row.
      This will actually create an edge to your sides and will eliminate that larger loop issue.
      I have a video showing what I mean .
      I show how to do it for a scarf but you would use the same technique for a blanket.
      Just skip that first loop and work into the 2nd loop when you start a new row .

    I found your finger knit blanket video & just started my first one today. I actually watched your video last year & bought the yarn but just had not started it. My first mistake was not counting my initial row loops. I just got into a groove & kept going. I did go back & count, removing quite a bit, leaving me with what I thought I had counted at 30. Somehow though I now have 58. I havent missed or dropped any stitches but I am doing it on my lap so they have gotten alot wider. I must have not have counted my initial row correctly. That brings up mistake #2, that initial row is just too tight. I made the loops very small & now 3 skeins in, I have quite a large ruffle. I fear if I keep going I will have a giant skirt instead of a blanket. I fear to ask, because I know the answer, am I going to have to take it all out & restart it? LOL! Luckily it is not a difficult process to finger knit, but I have just wasted quite a bit of time on it. I had hoped that I could maybe re shape it once I got it done but now that it is getting wider, I do not think it will be possible.
    I am using the same Bernat big that you are using in the color plum fest. I bought 6 hoping it would make a nice sized throw. How many loops should I be starting my first row with for a decent sized throw using 6? I could pick up some more, I bought it at Michaels & they still have it, if I need to. I really have issues with math but it seems like your calculation here in this video means I should have bought 9 or 10 skeins? I would greatly accept any suggestions you might have. I am going to set this aside for the night & go back to my cross stitch project.

      Ohhh damn 😕 I’m sorry on the different issues you have dealt with along the way. And yes, you know what I’m going to say 😅 you really will be much happier with it if you restart. It will be worth it.
      Have you seen my tip video already on how to help with these issues ?
      What are the measurements you want to make your blanket? 6 balls gave me a decent 4x5 foot throw blanket (maybe a little bigger) .

      @@PlayHookywithMe I should have started with a little sample just to get the hang of it. I also should have pulled it out a few rows in when I noticed it was starting to widen out, lol. I am going to re start it, but I will do it on the table, not my lap. I saw how it was starting to get wide & I was trying to keep pulling them in tighter but it was just too far in to make a difference. It does get quite heavy hanging off the sides on your lap.
      If 6 will make a 4x5 ish throw, that is good. So, how many loops across do you do when starting for that?
      I will give you a chuckle for the night, my starting row is measuring 62" while my ending row (3 whole balls) is measuring 95". LOL! When I said I had a really big skirt going, I really meant it :) It looks really good as far as the knit, I am very excited to see it when I do finish it properly.

      @@Cheryl_Loves_Purple haha 😂 it happens. I can’t remember how many I made for that size. I usually just take a tape measure and chain to the 4ft mark and then go from there.
      I’m assuming you’ve seen the tip video, but just in case, you need to make your loops for the initial chain wider to help compensate for the tightening and widening issue . Good luck and let me know how it goes 👍🏻💕

    After finishing the blanket for the first time my first row was much tighter than all of the other rows.
    Is there anyway of correcting this after completion?

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před rokem

      Unfortunately, no, there isn’t any way other than stretch the heck out of it with your hands. Maybe add some steam to help it stretch. If it’s really bothering you , I would redo it. 😕💕

      I show you in this video how to add a new color or ball of yarn on the side of the blanket to avoid knots.
      But you can watch this video where I show you how to make a knot to join a new ball of yarn :

    How many loops would you need for a queen size blanket?

    • @PlayHookywithMe
      @PlayHookywithMe  Před 6 měsíci +1

      No idea. I don’t count loops - I just take a tape measure and loop along until I reach the width I want.
      That is what I recommend 👍🏻💕

      This is Bernat blanket yarn. You can get it at many locations if you are on the US. If not, search for yarn that requires a 25 mm hook
