  • Smart phones, computers and the digital age. They effect every aspect of our lives, is it making our world better or worse? Has your life been made better because of it, or worse? (The thumbnail picture says it all for me.)

Agree with you 💯 percent. It's not the advances of technology that is concerning, its the absolute dependency and 24hr addiction we have to it. Myself especially. There isn't a moment that isn't getting lost in social media, head down eyes on screen, rather than one-on-one interaction. Folk would rather film their life, or often fake their life, than live it. Hate channels, bullying, bots and trolls. weren'tpart of the vocabulary in the 70s. We made stuff, learned skills, helped each other. Predators now come into our home, steal our empathy. Weird that the technology that connects us all is also the tech, that sometimes makes us further isolated, and less human, I think.

Agree 100%. I was raised to pay attention to what was going on around me and especially to be on the lookout for anyone that might need a helping hand with something. As a 12 year old I used to spend most weekends going to the shops for any of the elderly neighbours (the nearest shop was about a mile away). When decimalisation came in I was constantly helping and explaining it all to them.
The golden rule was that if somebody was older than you then they sat and you stood - it was quite simply a way of showing respect to them for having made the world better than it had been in their youth so we could enjoy the benefits.
As for modern tech, again I agree. It is a tool - use it when needed then put it down.

In the old days we wouldn't be able to see you, or communicate with you , but then we would be seeing others and neighbours to talk too. We would only go to libraries when we couldn't work it out ourselves , and I still do that , I will still try to work it out myself rather than use google , because it isn't always right.

Damn straight fella. But thats not techs fault, thats just modern ignorance. We’re doomed. I take heart in the fact that I don’t have to put up with it for long, whereas the kids have a lifetime of it. 😂

I agree also, many many years ago we used to go the the caravan camps in Great Yarmouth. I remember my mother saying we used to walk around the camp in the evening seeing other families doing the same, then one year they put potable tv’s in all the caravans it wasn’t the same ever again it seemed like a ghost town everyone staying in to watch the soaps.

I agree about the use of technology, but it can save the day sometimes…
I drive as part of my job and recently a young asian man of student age was walking with his head down looking at his phone and just stepped into the road and walked into the side of my van whilst I was stationary at a Zebra crossing.
He then called the police who must been around the corner, as they were there in a couple of minutes.
They then took me aside and proceeded to use a breathalyser on me and ask me what speed I was driving after he told them I had driven at him!
Thankfully the incident was caught on a CCTV camera outside a shop near the crossing and after viewing it they sent him packing, surprisingly without any repercussions!
It Could have been very different…
I popped into the shop the next day and thanked the guy for his help.

I'm 19 so I can't really know if any time period was objectively better, or better in collective consciousness. (I certainly don't think my own generation views these as 'golden years'.) I suppose you can choose to live a social media free life at any time, and use whatever degree of technology you see fit and more or less have the right amount of it. But as for how people behave I'm less convinced thats drastically different from one decade to the next (except influenced by political environments and historical events perhaps)

Al, your a great guy for gently trying to nudge the youngsters into grasping that life was easier and more relaxed before the great computer hell turned up, but I'm afraid it is likely to have no effect until they find out for themselves that they are being take for a ride by the huge tech corporations, banks and just about every other shark out there. I tried the same chat with the young fella serving at the pub and got the usual blank look and sometimes the worse 'what's this old bloke rambling on about'. Nice to try mate but it's best to give up.
New subject - Why does everyone want to buy a gadget with an expensive battery and charger when instead you could just plug it into the mains for ever using a plug and a bit of electrical flex? What happens in a couple of years when the batteries are toast!? Big tech score 6, dopey shopping punters score 0 (yet again).

I understand your point about consideration, and probably he could have been nicer about it, however consider this; That "young man" may have had an "invisible" disability causing him to need the seat. Perhaps an ostomy bag, fibromyalgia, sleeping disorder, the list goes on. Age doesn't give you the right to take the seat he intentionally booked ahead of time, something you could also have done. It sounds like you were both able to stand together just fine, so you cannot argue that you required a seat.
Having said that, in this case I suspect he was just inconsiderate as you suggested, since he put the suitcase on the chair. But please do remember that invisible disabilities do exist, and don't judge a book by its cover.

I fear the next generation will make a difference, this generation now should be worried, when we need help in later years, will they the next generation be there for us……. I believe your generation made it, with tough times, This generation now will have to work a bit harder, the next generation will work even harder but I fear for them,

You moving away from plumbing videos Al? As you can see from my Avatar thingy (Rant), I'm not prone to keeping my gob shut about things that I see as wrong in our society. I agree with everything you say but I would've been asking him to move his suitcase off the seat next to him - can't imaging he reserved that seat as well. Trouble is, ther'es no consequencies for bad behaviour these days. I was in a "Quiet Carriage" on a train a while back and this young lady had headphones on that everyone could hear - when the guard asked her to stop she told him to f off and he just walked away!!
