Hes been a great decision maker and literally made game winning plays in SEVERAL clutch games in the regular season (him kyrie and luka explain why dallas has statistically been the best clutch team in the NBA this season). But hes COMPLETELY unproven in the playoffs. How he handles the big stage could make or break dallas

he turned out to be the 3rd ball handler theyre looking for. but when hes on that role i felt like he is restrained and scared to commit errors. he is more relentless and scary in scoring when playing with luka. but on the other side green and lively is going back so exum being the 3rd guard is great to set their tone on any line up.
Surviving FIBA's Partizan, it would be piece of cake for him, of course only with addaptation. I believe in his confidence...

@@danukool It's not about hype for me. Even for a Mavs fan, the Clippers are a tough match-up for us. It is just that he is talking about THJ, who has not played an essential role in the second half of this season. The Clippers are an excellent and constant squad, whereas we have been on a heater, but you never know when that heat may die. Also, Lively, our outstanding rookie, recently lost his mom, which will play a massive part in this upcoming series. I still think Dallas will take it, but we will bleed when doing it.
4-5 is always one of the toughest matches in the playoffs. And you have to play 1st seeds right after.
Okc is the 1st seed. I fully expect whoever advances to beat them. But okc also has to handle business either against the kings or warriors. 2 teams who are still hungry.

Clippers: One of the most expensive teams in the NBA. Kawhi has yet to take them to the Finals. PG (33, 34 in 2 weeks), Harden (34) & Westbrook (35) running out of time to win a ring, all with uncertain contract situations, & can they all stay healthy?
Mavericks: Luka is now an MVP level player but yet to beat the Clippers in the playoffs, does Kyrie still have it and can he stay healthy for more than 1 series, role players under pressure to prove defensive chops in playoff conditions, can J Kidd coach the team to a title contending position, if they're bounced in the 1st round what does the future hold for Luka in Dallas long-term?
This is by far THE most exciting 1st round match up in either conference.
Listen man, Kawhi’s 100%. He’s heard the noise and ppl have literally forgot just how many times things have run through him when he’s on top. Kawhi has shown on multiple occasions he can carry a squad and he’s never had a cast like this.
PG’s heard the noise and has shown in 2021 (as well as other years) that he can absolutely dominate come playoff time, people seem to forget
Harden doesn’t have to be the number 1 guy but he’s still, like Luka & Bron; is one of the only 3 players in the league who can score and pass on that level at that size.
Russell will be the X factor.
I think people are seeing this as Luka’s time to get over the hump and while Cuban and the GM have done all they can to surround him with talent since his rookie season (the moment they seen how special he was); this is by the far the best team he’s had. I see this going 7 and he and Kyrie being special; I just think in a Game 7 and people having doubted the Clippers so much and praying on their downfall/expecting injury; they’ve been elite and healthy…I got Kawhi in company in 7.

Difference defensively is that Paul and Kawhi aren’t quick. Neither is beating Luka purely because of their speed so put non-sluggish size on them and they’re covered well enough.
Luka is a nightmare on offense because his bag is too deep. Prime Harden wasn’t that deep, he was an exploiter of the rules at the time and is absolutely never going to achieve that level of scoring over any real stretch ever again. Paul and Kawhi was great, but again, not that deep unless they’re “hot.” Luka is always on fire. He’s a self lit volcano. Kyrie is like most players in the sense that he’s not always cooking, but the problem is that if he is cooking, he’s probably #1 in the league in terms of unstoppable because of his bag when he’s on fire. And trouble is, he’s probably on fire if it’s the 2nd half or 4th quarter. With Luka and Kyrie, you aren’t safe going into the 4th quarter with a 20 point lead. You.just.aren’t. And both players don’t need the crowd to be on their side to mess you up even worse. You almost want your home crowd to be quiet, else fuel their indignation.

Clippers because Ty Lou is better at making defensive adjustments than any other coach today, no stable 9 man rotation. I expect to see trapping defense on Luca coming up the floor starting from half-court with risky deny defense on Kyrie. The Clippers are going to make the other 3 beat them, and I don't think the Mavs have the shooting for that to happen.

Nagging injuries that don’t take him off the floor but affect performance the last couple years. He hasn’t been close to 100% in any one of 2021, 2022, or 2023 so I think it’s cause for some concern.

Luka is probably going to average at least 35 but I'm more interested in the small ball lineup minutes for both teams
Who plays in the Clippers small ball lineups? For Dallas it would probably be Luka, Kyrie, DJJ, PJ, and Kleber, with Exum in their instead of DJJ at times. Dallas' small ball lineup still has pretty good size and decent rim deterrence with PJ and Maxi.
why not let Luka average 40pts?…. Let him average that and the rest of the team suffer, clippers will be fine with Luka averaging high numbers and still holding an L.

Both teams are pretty well rounded, but this series is going to flip because of the center position. Zubac is a lower-mid-tier starting center, but he's used to matching up against Dwight Powell. Zubac has always looked great against the Mavericks and they have always exploited that matchup. He used to get whatever he wanted on Dwight Powell, and he used to damn near nullify Dwight Powell as a defensive player.
We've matched up with the Clippers 3 times this year.

But this was all pre-trade... and only one of those games did Lively play (and you know which one)

So it looks like Lively is a bit better at scoring efficiency and defense while zubac is a little higher usage and better at rebounding... but the two players are actually very very similar.
Except for 1 thing... Lively isn't our starting Center anymore.

Gafford, 25/15.5/3.5 w 1.6stl 4.3 blocks 2.2 turnovers 6.2 fouls (netrtg +37, PER 25.1, TS% 76.9)
Lively is a better scorer, more efficient scorer, nearly as good a rebounder, a better passer, better stealer, better blocker, and is far favored by the conglomerate stats like netrtg, PER, and others.
So not only is Lively going to win the matchup with Zubac, he also provides 2 additional advantages.
1. We've essentially got another Zubac quality center on the bench (Lively) to keep BOTH of our centers staying fresh playing under 30 minutes a game.
2. Not only that, but we can foul out Lively and hardly even feel it.
Our centers are going to win the matchup with Zubac, and they are going to DOMINATE the bench, and have twice the fouls to use strategically. Meanwhile, Zubac not only has to contend with very aggressive play in the post from Gafford and Lively, but he's got to play help defense for Luka and Kyrie (who are both a couple of the best at drawing fouls in the league.)
Zubac is CONSTANTLY going to be on double-duty trying not to run up his foul count, and when the Mavs get him in foul trouble, our Centers are going to TRAMPLE Theis and Plumlee.
And unlike situations like Luka going off, or 3 pointers falling, etc... the paint dominance will be there EVERY SINGLE GAME. There are not going to be games where Gafford and Lively miss 10 shots.
ON THE MAVS' WORST DAY, Gafford and Lively might put up Zubac numbers together. On the Mavs best day, they could add up for an EFFICIENT 30/20/3 w 2steals and 5 blocks while missing like 5 fgs and turning over the ball once. During a game like that, the Mavericks could win shooting 25% from 3!
Our center rotation is going to be an uphill battle for the Clippers, and it isn't even their biggest problem to deal with. They are going to be doubling Luka, scheming for Kyrie, and meanwhile their center rotation is just not water-tight against ours... takes on too much water and it doesn't even matter if the actual game-plan works or not.
Kawhi might go off one night and pull out a tough win. Fine. But do the Clippers big four EACH have a miracle in their pockets and will those miracles happen at the right times to get 4 wins out of them? Probably not.
The Mavs aren't going to sweep the Clippers. They've got enough magic dust to get at least 1 win in a series. But the Mavericks have Luka who will keep 2 or 3 games alive that really shouldn't be, maybe a couple Kyrie and Luka clutch opportunities, a true team win, 2 or 3 shots for a walk-off game-winning buzzer beater, a couple games that the TEAM is going off and 3's are going in. We've got all these ways to win games... and we'll have Gafford and Lively with their fingers on the scales in the post the entire time.
The Mavs will have A TON of opportunities to execute and bring home a W. There will be several ways to win EVERY GAME (not saying we will always execute... just saying we will always have a viable strategy to execute.)
The Clippers need everything to pretty much go right (to offset their issues in the post) AND one of their big 4 to give the Mavs fits to bring any W over the finish line.
The Clips will pull it off once or twice, but this series... our center rotation is just too reliable. The table is tilted our way and we have so many ways to beat them.
We COULD win a game if our center rotation sucked for some reason... but that just doesn't happen. Gafford and Lively are our foundation. We can count on an AT LEAST mediocre production from them. We build the rest from there and we have lots of options.
I think Dallas can win playing Gafford or Lively at all times, but I also think there's a possibility that Dallas could go small and it could be even more effective. Dallas' small ball lineup is still pretty damn big with PJ, Maxi, DJJ, and Luka all having 7+ foot wingspans. That's a lineup that's even more capable of switching defensively, while still being able to have decent rim deterrence with PJ and Maxi.
Zubac is gonna get cooked by Luka, Gafford, and Lively. We know what Kawhi will do but the Clippers can only win this series if PG and Harden also carry their weight

I think one key you didn’t mention was clutch game wins. Mavericks are number 1 in clutch games and even a few of the losses came down to anomalies such as Cavs half court heave and vs gsw a missed travel call by Klay. That’s 2/7 losses in clutch and i believe they have 70% win rate in those games already

Biggest question is can anybody else step up for Dallas? Luka's average across the past clippers series would show that PG13 and Kawhi didn't slow him down at all (averaging 35/10/8). Luka just didn't have anyone else to consistently help him offensively. If Kyrie, Gafford and PJ Washington can help him, I think they win in all close games

Mavs bigs are key. They give mavs this new dimension in their offense. It opens the 3. It opens a lot of space. Gaff got played out of the floor numerous times this season. Lively is questionable due to circumstances and injury. But if he plays, he's just a rookie and it's his first playoffs. A lot of stuff needs to click and get right for them to execute.
This is not a favorable match up for the mavs. Idk why mavs fans feel so confident about this matchup. Clippers might just be biding their time. Even kawhi. He might even be healthy, he's just currently resting.
This has to go to 7. This is not a 4-5 game series. But in the event it does, then you can expect the clippers to win.
I'm a mavs fan. I still believe😂 iknow this roster is the best in the Luka era. But so is the clippers. They got 4 Allstars bruh😂 2 of them might be superstars. For me I consider kyrie still a superstar. He's that good. He's an allstar at the very least.
All in all, I give luka the responsibility in this series. This is his revenge game fs. He's the one with the most history against them. I fully expect an MJ like performance. Idk if he can turn up more defensively but that's what he has to do. In offense, I fully expect him to get close to 40ppg every game. This should be where his legend is made. You're wrong about Ty Lue over Jason Kidd. I personally think Kidd is going to noticeably outcoach him. Kidd having the Mavs playing their best ball to end the season is no fluke.
I don’t think Kidd should be solely credited for their success though. He’s made good changes to the rotation for sure but I worry about adjustments. He also isn’t responsible for Luka and Kyrie being a GOAT-level offensive backcourt.

Since the trade deadline I believe the Mavs are something like 6-2 when they shoot less than 30% from 3. The variance caused by their shooting has drastically changed.
