Where Do Bass Go After They Spawn? (And How To Catch Them)

  • Its really easy once someone explains it! Post Spawn bass don't just disappear, they follow a very consistent pattern as they transition to Summer haunts. Today Matt walks us through each step as the fish shift from spawning to recuperating, and from traveling back to feeding. Post spawn is notoriously difficult because many anglers are unclear about how the fish move from April to June but its about to get a whole lot easier!
We've already discussed "Where Bass Go In Spring", post spawn is the exact same story run in reverse, but with a twist. After the fish spawn they'll move to the first ledge or point along their transition route. Here they will sit for a week or two to recuperate before feeding again. This is often the time when anglers feel lost and begin to panic about where the fish have gone. As soon as this period ends, the fish make a split. Half of the bass follow the remainder of the route out to deep outside or offshore structures and the other half push back in to the shallows.
The fish that turn shallow are the most fun because you're able to power fish them (flipping, punching, and frogging) but the fish that head offshore school up into mega schools and offer a whole different kind of excitement! It doesn't matter which direction you go, you're going to have a great time targeting either group of bass.
Below is a breakdown of the baits and tackle we're using to target these fish throughout the transition process and beyond.

    Great video, Matt! Outstanding!
The thoroughness of this instruction is must be acknowledged, truly outstanding!
This is why I love @Tacticalbassin. I enjoy all of your videos and there is something to be learned in every one. That being said; when Tim, yourself, or both of you have get on a topic like this and just go, there is a deep wealth of information being shared with us!
This video, and the others like this, need to be watched several times just to let it all sink in. Thank you, Matt for reminding us; an expert fishing guide and a game warden sharing is what @Tacticalbassin is really all about!

GOD! I needed this! My head's about to explode trying to get back on the bite at my local impoundment. I find 'em, drill some, then they completely vanish and no matter what I do, I can't get bit. A swim jig through the face of my main, helm mounted electronics has put me at a huge disadvantage but that's changing tomorrow with a new Garmin w/SideVu. Matt, if you happen to see this, what's a good technique for getting to those fish hunkered down in thick submerged brush that's below the surface. Our lake drew way down during drought and the vegetation forest grew and is now submerged and thick. I know fish are holding in it but how to get to them with the moss and gunk collecting on the brush and the tops are a few feet under the surface?!

Not one bass to be had today...any advice would be helpful. I will be changing some lures though. One has been caught while deflecting off lay downs using a small square bill red craw. The other one a strike king 4 inch watermelon craw with green die on the claws.

I do a lot of fishing on a shallow river in VA, lots of different terrain in the river, no grass to speak of. Mostly big rock, subtle rock shelf, and wood. Almost all rock bottom with some slower silted spots. During the hot summer months it seems like the fish are super scattered. That time of year we hammer the smaller fish, I'm talking 30-40 fish days but all small fish. I seem to only get on the bigger 4-5 pounders in the spring and fall. The river has a ton of current both small and largemouth are always relating to current breaks and eddy's whether visible or around submerged boulders. I am wondering if you have any pointers for finding the big bites during the heat of the summer. There is no opportunity for deep cranking and no junk to punch. BTW the river has a lot of spring fed water and stays cooler longer, spawn is usually during May- early June. I know it holds jumbos (5-6+ lb) because I catch them in spring and fall, summer is much slower as far as big bites. I have had sporadic luck with decent fish in the summer(3-4 lbs) burning spinnerbaits around anything that looks fishy, but have yet to dial in a reliable big fish program for July and August. If there is anyone on YT that has ideas I know its you guys. Thanks

Hey Matt. What about northern lakes? We don’t really have any hard rock bottoms. How else can I approach the post spawn on secondary point? I assume anomaly’s like you mentioned? Most secondary points we have up north are covered entirely with weeds. Lmk if you got any tips. Thanks!

If I’m fishing clear water, would I want to go with a ghost color DD instead of a bold white color?
