I do this all the time and it helps me a lot. I was horribly stuck on several paintings that I couldn't finish. Through contemplation, I relaized that I am a narrative artist and if there is no story, I don't know what to do. I am not able to just make pictures of beautiful things or landscapes.I was trying to paint just what was in front of me to develop skills---but had to take a rather long break from that. There has to be at least symbolism and a tale to tell. Once I figured that out, the pieces went forward to a happy ending.

Thank you for your comment. I didn't realize what kind of artist I was until I read your comment. It resonates with me that I am a Narative artist.

While I didn't share the narrative path, at first, I get it, my stop gap was, and becoming less and less, is observation skills. I thought I had a it all worked out, until you start to paint and realize my narrative idea, which I thought was initially awesome, doesn't work because of the positioning and color schemes. I now stare and study and plan out way more than before, it helps me greatly now. I still change things, but compositional setup is so important. Your note resonated with me because I have those 3 paintings that went nowhere for 3 years! yikes, but just could not get past, have to fix this, why isn't this working? Now, they are coming together and one is already done. Because I was mentallly stuck on composition. As artists, we are always learning new ways that work for us. For me, I have two modes, paint a waterscape ocean for its beauty to me to express, but narratively, my paintings from my imagination HAVE to HAVE a narrative. I get it:)

@@rolandlemus203 I have to plan more than before because I want to create effects that depend on the underpainting and certain values being in certain places. I don;t do grisaille, but abstract underpaintings, but those have to have the narrative in mind to work out.

I find taking a photo of my work-in-progress as helpful. It gives me a better view of the piece as a whole. It's similar to stepping back from the painting, but it's seeing the piece from even further away -- much further than my room would allow.

I paint in natural light and I find, if I wait until dusk - then it gives me another perspective - perhaps it is similar to squinting your eyes. I find if I meditate on the painting in half dark, I get some good ideas as to what to work on next.

So true. I always feel rushed to get my easel set up and start painting. I will try this. Writing notes definitely helps when solving complex problems. I do this for other projects at home and at work so why not use this approach for paintings too? Very interesting to hear your thoughts Florent thank you 👍

Excellent suggestion. You will naturally visualize ( in small or maybe big ways) your actions that are inspired during this time. And we know the power of visualization

As long as I don't have to take my notes in French, I'll be fine. I currently have a painting that keeps trying to twist and escape under my hands and I'm about to give up on this one and simply move on to something else for now.
