It’s time for an almighty tug of war!
First up we’ve got the best of British, the new Land Rover Defender, going up against the Jeep Wrangler Rubicon! On the face of it, you may think the Jeep Wrangler has the advantage, given its 2-litre turbo petrol can put down 270hp - more than the Defender’s 2-litre turbo, which can only produce 240hp.
However, that’s just about where the Wrangler’s advantages seem to end, as the Defender can produce 430Nm (compared to the Wrangler’s 400Nm), it’s heavier (weighing 2.4 tonnes compared to the Wrangler’s 2 tonnes) and it’s jam-packed full of off-roading tech!
However, that’s not all! Once these two have gone head-to-head, the Mercedes G350d will roll up to take on the winner! With a 2.9-litre straight-six diesel which can produce 286hp & 600Nm, this is one Mercedes which can easily take on either of these competitors!
All we know is - you don’t want to miss this!

I felt a bit sorry for the Defender. Its tyres weren't ideal for this, but also the tow point being so far over would have put most of the load on that one side of the car, making it slide even more easily. The G was a class act though - diffs, gearing, tyres and mass all doing what they do.
They probably had to tow that Defender to the shop afterwards.

There has "Grass Gravel Snow" option in LR..... I really dunno why would you chose "Mud Ruts"...... no clue
Its because the surface under the grass is mud. So it will give you more grip with its deeper grooves.
@@martinsvensson6884 mmmm.... if so, why would LR bother to give "Grass Gravel Snow" mode, all grass grow on mud, aren't they? "Grass Gravel Snow" mode is used on surfaces that is slippery as you can tell by "Snow". And "Mud Ruts" mode is more focus on differential, when wheel or wheels is stuck into mud rut.
@@gc602 Ah ok. I thought you meant why they chose those tires.

That was so embarrassing with the Land Rover Defender😂😂
jeep had offroad tyres tho & defender had street tyres
also look at where rope was attached middle in jeep & side of defender it gave unfair advantage to jeep
I think the biggest disadvantage for the Defender was that its suspension was at its highest setting
Put a different tires on the Defender and see the difference
Still more to do with weight. Put 5 large people in that Landrover with 1 person in the Jeep and it would probably have won. Tug of war is a pointless test

Gotta love some people wetting themselves over the G Wagon, conveniently forgetting that not only it is quite a bit more powerful than the Jeep, but also weighs half a ton more.
And costs x times more...
And in off-road the jeep is better because it is lighter, then there is also a big difference in price, no one would take 100,000 euros of car off-road
Buy the defender.
You forgot to do: Jeep + LandRover (tied together) vrs Mercedes
The Defender was let down by the organic bit behind the steering wheel lol
No, its an automatic system.
@@martinsvensson6884 Doesn't matter if the guy behind the wheel mashes his foot to the floor. As soon as you spin the wheels and break traction the grip is gone, especially on road tyres.
Sure the mud tyres on the Jeep gave it the advantage, but working with the Terrain Response on the Defender would have helped not just flooring it.
@@Plantsman1989 And where does it tell you that he just mashed the gas? And just in the LR? But it doesnt matter that much when you have traction control on. Because it will never let all that power go to the wheels anyway. As soon as 1 wheel loses traction it will cut power immediately until it regains traction. And if the car moves back or forth during that it will again have its full traction back.
@@martinsvensson6884 You could see he was heavy on the throttle. He was throwing mud everywhere.
All the off-roading and recoveries I used do I'd never just floor it and let the electronics do the rest. It's all about being light on the pedals, refined, no big inputs, feeling what the vehicle is doing underneath you. Very rarely did I have any electronic interference at all. The only thing I used to use regularly was the Hill Decent Control.
@@Plantsman1989 Just flooring it is an advantage during some off road conditions. It depends. But it doesnt matter that much if he is heavy on the throttle once the pull is in action. The system wont deliver more power to the wheels than they can take. Regardless of how much you push the pedal. And the newer the car the faster the system will react. And you dont know if the drivers of these cars did anything differently. Of course its going to throw mud when its being pulled backwards. And you can see in the start that he's not just flooring it. Because it doesnt spin to begin with! And you can see the system braking the wheels to a momentary stop even, to regain traction. Doesnt help. The tires on the Jeep has much better rip.
Put some offroad tyres on the Def and try again for another video!

the biggest land rovers disadvantage is that its tow hook is at its left side instead of the middle, thats why it upsets the cars balance when you pull it

@@Technoboy1000 but mostly in the middle
@@iamtheone2292 No, its on the side on all cars.
How is it a disadvantage when the other 2 cars also has it on the side?
No. The biggest disadvantage was not having lockable differentials. The systems that rely on detecting wheel spin don't stand a chance against locked diffs.
I think that’s down to the tyres
No it’s all about power however the only reason the G-Wagon won the jeep because Matt cheated somehow for sure.

Better still with the 400bhp hybrid its a monster 👹
in these conditions and "test" pretty sure the same as the 4cyl Diesel. This "test" isn't about the engine, the LR lost because the electronics need wheelspin to react. And if the wheelspin occurs, the other car (no matter if the Wrangler or the G) had 4 wheels without wheelspin (3 locks) and thus more connection to the ground with which more force could be applied.
@@nirfz ye that's true but the new discovery when he had a tug of war with that car, it managed to beat the g wagon.
@@beaviccoon470 If i remember correct it was a Range Rover Sport SVR, against a G63. (The AMG should be a tiny bit lighter than the Diesel) Manufacturers today aren't that honest with their "empty weights" These usually highlight the "emptiest" trim and without all optional extras in the "cheapest market". The G is a bit closer to these numbers as there's not much in terms of options anyway no matter the market. So the Range Rover will have had the advantage in weight. (despite the claim of it to be lighter) And then we get to MR. Watsons eagerness to apply power. Which in the 350d's case he was able to calm down.

You're on grass, use the grass mode. Lower the suspension to normal height too, it doesn't need to be in off road height, you're not rock crawling.
It was also pulled from an offset point aswell so the left wheels were bound to loose traction before.
@@Joey-ve7ku Same goes for the 2 other cars. None of them has the hook in the middle.
This “contest” only proves that traction is king. Let me add weight to my Defender 90 with dual ARB front/rear diff air lockers, locked center diff and AT tires so it’s a couple hundred kilos more than the Mercedes and I’m certain it will win. Kudos though to the Mercedes for being old school with real diff lockers.
Ladder frame chassis, solid axle, lockers. If it ain't broke don't fix it. The Jeep and G both have stayed the same formula since they were invented and they have always dominated. Defender with its fancy electronics and weak ass frame with air ride suspension can't stand up to it.
@@esthermezhu9297 power to weight ratio is also what it's about. The Defender had more torque but was heavier, the extra newtons didn't matter because pound for pound, the Jeep had the upper hand. Meanwhile the G with 600 nm just smashed everything
@@esthermezhu9297 like I said: power to weight ratio. The Defender had 20 more newtons than the Jeep but the Jeep was 400 kg lighter meaning those extra 20 newtons didn't count in the Defenders favor because power to weight ratio. The G, despite being fat af had 600 nm so its power to weight ratio was still more than the Jeeps
Yep. You gotta be able to get the power to the ground. My RAM 2500 is running front and rear diff lockers and it will pull just about anything that gets stuck on the trail out (6.7L diesel with MTs and 7,500 lbs empty).
Power to weight means nothing on a soft surface, it's all about traction. You get traction by turning all four tires at the same speed and having a lot of weight pushing down on them.
To y'all not versed in science/physics, it's a function of vehicle weight and tire design. Heavier vehicles with better tires will have an advantage in a tug of war. I am not sure of the mathematics formula (which criteria -- the weight of vehicle or tires -- gets weighted more in the formula), but a tug of war in no way dictates the off-road prowess of a particular vehicle. Off-road prowess is based on #1 tires, #2 4x4 or 4x2, #3 does it have locking diff's, #4 ground clearance, #5 power/gearing.........etc..
Seeing the G-WAGON, it felt as a father walking out his son out of the room holding the sons ears
Who else is bored and watches this for no reason?
I would love to see a match btw Merc and a rubicon deisel that would be a more fair match. Low end torque wins. Not the tires as u can see here.
I don't think that the Jeep is available in a diesel. Here in the US you can't get the Rubicon in a 2.0L at all. It's a 3.6L or a 6.4L. For the price of the Mercedes G you could get two Rubicon 392s.

The rubi would take any of these two on a real off road track with ease. Far more articulation and lower center of gravity. Also being light has some great advantages when wheeling.

bring the straight 6 defender then see what happens .
And then bring the V8 G

They haven't made a straight 6 Wrangler since 2006. The V8 Rubicon would be the best choice given that it is still cheaper than either of the other vehicles.
Either way this isn't a test where engine power is all that important. It is all about traction and a vehicle with locking differentials has a huge advantage.
