      The core story is relatively unchanged, but the neutering of the visuals kinda fucks with the way you'd look at this series from an interpretive perspective. The manga leans heavily on visual storytelling, and this new anime decided that that wasnt important at all and completely fucked it up. Also the new show completely skipped an entire arc, so the plot doesn't even escape unscathed.

      Dugon man Well Sort of but the GodHand are posing as the "4 Angels" compared to the Elemental Beings Schierke draws power from. The point of disconnect that religion gives that we are somehow not part of the same nature that we are somehow better than animals/plants or even other humans depending on what we believe. We cling to the afterlife to go to heaven or hell rather than focusing on the life we have now.
      Thats why the religious people in Berserk are literally blind to magical creatures like Puck. It kinda says Organized Religion despite being for peace only divides us as people. Lot of modern religions stems off from paganism as well.

    While Berserk has an overwhelming level of shock violence, violence itself is not the theme of Berserk but that of fate and determinism. Miura subverts many aspects of traditional storytelling by showing Gutz to be more of a protagonist with villainous qualities than heroic ones, and it isn't until the most recent arcs that he's somewhat more relaxed. On the other hand, Griffith is the knight in shining armor and the one that everyone looks up to even though he sacrificed the souls of his friends and his body in an unholy demon ritual to get a second shot at his "dream". Overall everyone became who they were because of the things that happened in their lives.

    • @barghestblue731

      serenadesilhout they said early in the video that they were only going to talk about the philosophy behind the violence of berserk, they acknowledged there were other themes but they were just doing the violence in this video, the rest of it is for someone else at another time

    • @serenadesilhout
      @serenadesilhout Před 6 lety +1

      I acknowledge that. However its such an incredibly narrow interpretation that risks missing the entire point. There's a reason the original anime always started off with the ominous narrator -it helps reinforce themes which were given consistent focus. Even the character's names tell you something about their personalities and their destinies.

    • @serenadesilhout
      @serenadesilhout Před 6 lety

      I've been watching many Wisecrack videos since the channel began and it just falls short of their capabilities. They should really come back to this video to give it justice. There are plenty of sources that speak on the philosophical themes of Berserk so there's plenty of avenues they could have approached this. It also doesn't help when all the clips used were from the 2016-2017 Berserk anime version which has the most negativity attached to it.

    • @malikjackson9337
      @malikjackson9337 Před 6 lety

      serenadesilhout Well considering they said there was more to talk about, I imagine that they would definitely have to make more than one video fully explaining the nuances in Guts' philosophy. I mean violence is still a very important aspect of the art. Like most stories worth anything they have layers of messages and deeper meanings that is meant to keep us thinking. I would still like to see a part 2 on Guts' and Determinism. (Even though a lot of modern stories play with this idea until it's almost redundant) I would advise for you to wait what they have to say next time before saying they have missed the mark.

    • @serenadesilhout
      @serenadesilhout Před 6 lety +1

      Malik Jackson I'm merely being critical and I mentioned that I've watched Wisecrack since the channel was fairly new so that's not going to change my appreciation for them and the hard work that they do. However saying Berserk is about violence is similar to saying the philosophy of video games is about violence and movies are about violence and war is about violence. It's just an incredibly shallow argument. While violence may serve a role in the story, I don't find it to be the "theme" or message of the show and I'm sure they knew that.

      Sure, I'm aware the creators have to make choices as to what is to be presented, but I think predestination and causality are two themes that are a lot more relevant than framing Guts or Griffith as revolutionaries/blood artists. Hence I feel that would have been a more interesting topic.

  • @TacticalMikey
    @TacticalMikey Před 6 lety +177

    So we're only talking about the philosophy of *VIOLENCE* in Berserk, not the overarching philosophy of Berserk, yes? If so, then this is a good analysis for the role that it plays in the series, in that violence from our protagonists (mainly Guts) acts as an expression of the rejection of social conformity. Guts cleaving through a group of soldiers serving a hierarchy built off of falsehoods and actual evil *_is_* - in a sense - beautiful, much like Griffith and his forces butchering the Kushan forces who persecuted Sonia's village. The justification for Guts and Griffith's admittedly visceral and brutal approaches to these predicaments is that their adversaries are commonly responsible for hideous acts of violence done under the guidance of social conformity (i.e. the stoning, genocides, torture for religion, etc.).
    My only complaint for this video essay would be it's title; _Berserk_ is *filled* with philosophical ideas. I feel that narrowing it down to _just_ the violence is like ordering delivery for one slice of pizza, it's like, "Where's the rest?"

    • @mattbrady2011
      @mattbrady2011 Před 6 lety +6

      Well they do say they'll do videos on the other themes and ideas later. After all we cant make this video the general philosophy of berserk cause it'd be a 30 hour video!

    • @MrNight48
      @MrNight48 Před 6 lety +5

      Plus, like he said, wisecrack can't do the "whole pizza" because berserk is not finished and the ending could go somewhere completely different than what it is now. Also the author took a long ass 20 year vacation time so the author's ideas and the direction of the story may change completely. So we have to be satisfied with this and honestly, it's a good analysis.

    • @Kurisma
      @Kurisma Před 6 lety

      MrNight48 I mean it still doesnt change the philosophy of berserk now, like if the ending were to change like you said it still wouldnt change the philosophy of the current material only add on to it. So saying we should be satisfied for reasons like manga anint finished is dumb because they could talk about the philosophy of how it is now because in the future whatever the ending will be wont change the philosophy of the current material the only thing it will change is the overall philosophical theme but I still think they should do vids about certain parts of berserk (like they just have done) and it wont be bad for when or if the manga ends for the philosophical theme.

    • @MrNight48
      @MrNight48 Před 6 lety +1

      I disagree, the philosophy may not change but they could end up not getting a lot of things right and the video will age poorly. I rarely see wisecrack go back and revise videos when new things come to light about the subject matter nor have I've seen them ever make a video about the unfinished content's philosophy as a whole either. They have been consistent by only doing finished episodes/seasons/movies/books. Manga on the other hand is a different beast, most creators design them to go on forever and only end when the series isn't popular or external factors that could not be controlled. The author may have an idea on how to end his story but it is entirely possible the ending can destroy everything the story worked so hard to built up because it got axed.

    Berserk is primarily about existentialism. It follows along Nietzschean and Jungian themes. A lot of the scenarios in the show are almost directly out of Nietzsche and Carl Jung's writings. Nietzsche is even directly quoted in the story and the anime previews have displayed quotes from Nietzsche as well.

    • @kristofgriffin384
      @kristofgriffin384 Před 6 lety +11

      Sorry, but I highly disagree with what you said.
      While yes, Samurai Jack puts a heavy emphasis on its style, it was never the focus. The reason why Samurai Jack was so much more unique than all the other action cartoons from the 2000's and today, is because it focused less on dialog and more on telling its story with the visuals, music and actions of the characters, and dialog is spoken only when necessary. There was true drama and tragedies in episodes, with memorable and likeable characters, and fantastic actions scenes.
      For instance, Jack didn't go through much character development in the first 4 seasons, but he was still a very compelling character, because he was both someone we can look up to and relate to. Jack was hero who inspired and helped people, even if they didn't have to anything with his mission of destroying Aku. He's selfless, righteous, strong-willed, intelligent, and can hold his own even without his sword. But Jack is still human. He can get angry, he can get sad, he can be confused, he can fall in love, he can b tricked, he can joke and troll people, and there were several instances where he was close to giving up his quest. Jack isn't a compelling character because he's a paragon, but because he's human.
      And Aku is one of the best villains I've seen in fiction, because he can go from silly and over-the-top, to dangerous and terrifying.
      The episodes told unique stories, with awesome premices, memorable characters and music, and were a blast to watch. They can make you laugh, glee at the awesomeness, make you cry, etc.
      This series is the one that impacted me the most. It inspired me to one day become an animator/artist, and made me interested in the action genre as a whole.

    • @Thoreaux
      @Thoreaux Před 6 lety

      I don't wanna take that away from you bud, good luck in animation. But every episode of that show I ever saw bored me. Always figured it had to be for people who better enjoyed its visual identity, because as a person who didn't I got very little out of it. There was clearly this reverence for classic samurai flicks, where the plot and all the scenes have this patient pace and as its audience you're supposed to be taking your time admiring the scenery and deciphering the actor's expressions. But Samurai Jack's art is minimalist, I don't get much out of looking at it for very long, and Jack is a simple character, you understand who he is on episode one. He never surprises you, except when he fails at something he should have succeeded at, and then you know what the arc of that episode is going to be. You can still enjoy something that's predictable if watching it happen is spectacular, but like I said the art didn't really grip me.
      If they did a philosophy of Samurai Jack, what would they talk about? Not bushido, Jack deviated from his quest often for any little reason. Maybe like buddhist minimalism, Jack rolls through all these cyberpunk junklands full of useful technology but never possesses anything except his sword and usually but not always his clothes. And hey, the art style is complementary. Guess that could be a video.

This video mainly looks at the violence/fighting and some of the horror aspects. Which perfectly addresses SuperEyepatchWolf's complaints about the fight scenes and how they are handled. Aside from that, the other "observations" made during this video (especially about Guts) aren't wrong either, and compliment what was said in the other two videos you mentioned. No one has the "right" interpretation or analysis, nor does anyone cover everything completely, or understand everything completely (let alone present it). I personally found the other two you mentioned lacking (much more of an overview/general purvey and sometimes a bit reviewish).

    I don't know if you revisit series to illustrate a different aspect than the first time. If not, this is an enormous missed opportunity. Berserk has A LOT of philosophical content that is far more interesting (and relevant to the story) than violence: self-determination vs. fate, nature vs. nurture, the fundamentals of friendship and companionship, the idea of God as a force of will (or rather, desire, ambition), the old argument about the means to an end... and I'm not even mentioning the outstanding development and the gigantic complexity of the characters! The tension within Caska's hearth between a diluting position of support (and hopefully love) for someone she enshrines, and the possibility of actually giving herself to another... The struggle of proving yourself to someone you respect as a superior, only to be betrayed for trying to measure up to him... The simple and yet profound philosophy of commoners (Jill, Godo, Luca)... I could go on all day.
    Just consider that it's a series that spends FOURTEEN TANKOUBON (of 200 pages each!) or three 2hs. movies just establishing the main character's background... and then come back and give Berserk's philosophy another shot!

But yeah, I jive a lot with what's going on in this video.I would rather see your guys' thoughts on the overarching theme of free will vs. determinism that is rampant throughout the series. Also, maybe try to explore the imagery of Berserk, and how it attempts to flip the "knight in shining armor" trope on it's ass, and on the other hand it doesn't paint Gutts as a full-blown anti-hero. Also, for Christ's sake, make someone on staff read through the manga, and start using scans of it. Every panel is a Rembrandt, especially Golden Age Arc!

    Hey bud. I feel you missed it. The beauty of Berserk much more in the story and in the characterization than in the genre. And the artwork! Read the manga. The anime is watered down, in terms of storytelling as well as with the gore and all that.

    I think you paid attention where it wasn't due. This whole "artful violence" seems like bullshit to me, atleast in the berserk universe.
    All the violence in berserk is plainly brutal to show how cruel is the world, a cruel world that brings extreme sufeering to Guts (the protagonists). Violence is not an end in this serious but a medium, like in most stories to be honest. If you read the manga (read the fucking manga) you'd know that Guts has lived every horrible thing that could happen to a person, since he was a boy to when he's a full adult that falls in love finding a meaning to life that he never had.
    I'm not saying that you don't have a point but I really think this video is misguided. Guts and Griffith are excellent characters to study, one is a poor man who only knows violence and the other is a fine man that aspires to do great things in life, the perfect leader for a tribe.

    • @hiredsword
      @hiredsword Před 6 lety +15

      Valkyrka I believe he meant fine as in a man of means or well developed for his role, also possibly having to do with his looks, I don't think he meant fine as in a good person. Griffith is definitely not so black and white though, truly he is evil but he has layers and was more than that before the eclipse happened.

    • @mattbrady2011

      Its not about how violence effects those in berserk. But how the violence in Berserk shows us the sublime in horror. Guts and Griffith's feelings dont have as much weight as their killings do. I also feel like this is a weird and bullshit kind of idealism of violence and murder; but with the caveat of "BTW MURDER BAD" it steps aside of the shitty implications and focuses on the meaning behind the violence.

    • @BlackwingsProphet
      @BlackwingsProphet Před 6 lety +5

      Truer words have not been spoken I feel like the new anime tried to make berserk into something it was never meant to be the violence was never meant to be the main focus the emotion behind it is way more important I don't know about the most but I rather have a good story then some flashy action scene

    That wasn't really philosophy. That was just aesthetics. It blows my mind how, in a 14 minute video, you didn't come up with Gatsu deciding to seperate from Griffith in order to follow his own dream. It's pretty obvious.

    Thank you for making a berserk episode but this video really undermines the true philosophy behind Berserk by just focusing on the violence aspect. I mean you could have talk about the whole thematic of finding and pursuing a dream or myriad others yet you decided to focus on a stereotype everyone had before watching or reading Berserk and therefore strenghtening this stereotype. I'm a bit disapointed but this video was good nonetheless but it had way more potential. Thanks ! Keep the good work !

And the manga is just so beautiful. I liked the video but it would be great to explore the themes with the manga, especially since is going to be back from hiatus
