On stage they were amazing. They were all multi-instrumentalists too, and would often change from one instrument to another during a song.
This is something totally new to me. Thanks, Greybeard, for opening my mind. It sounds great. This is the second time Harri had mentioned the Rhodes keyboard. It’s so cool to learn the name of the instrument I have heard in many songs. Never too old to acquire new knowledge 🌺✌️

The Rhodes is definitely my favorite piano sound ever. It just vibrates something special in me.
If you care to explore, Bob James is the King of the Rhodes in my book. Spans lots of years with his work and many genres but gotta say my favorite is his playing on Idris Mohammed's '74 'Power of Soul'. Definitely top 3 album for me. Or his Solo album One. Lots of fusion and funk but his later years get more smooth and gentle

Nicely done Harri. Top shelf talent. I was fortunate to see GG 4 times and they were brilliant. Next you should react to a song called On Reflection which is available in a live version.
But you better start with the studio version ! On Reflection is incredible. Live it's great but first the studio version, really.

That "HAIL TO POWER AND THE GLORY CHORD" IS SOMETHING HAUNTING AS HELL. I will have to study the notes of that chord sequence.

Great choice Greybeard, I used to love listening to them on the radio in the 70s, especially as the spine of the band was the three Shulman brothers and one of my favourite late sixties bands was Simon Dupree and the BIg Sound which also featured the brothers. "Kites" especially was a wonderful song by SDatBS, I've got it on my list.
It's only a few days ago that I was listening to another of their albums. Obviously, they are great musicians but I think it's the vocals that make it for me.
One of my favorite Art Rock bands (we didn't call it Progressive back then). Hope you do more reactions for their stuff. Very melodic without too much over indulgent noodling.
50 years ago this song gave me chills at the 4:30 mark!! It still does, and it worked very nicely live as well!! For me, it's a toss up between Gentle Giant and Yes. and I'll never be able to pick between the two!! LOVE THEM BOTH
I have a great future request for you Harri, and yes my good man it is a live recording. Gentle Giant has many sounds from futuristic to chamber music that sounds like something you'd hear in medieval times. Your gonna appreciate me introducing to these lads!

@@robertcussins2807 thanks man! Grew up in a very eclectic family. We all listened to anything from Patsy Cline to Black Sabbath. It was an interesting childhood for sure. If you enjoy a more organic mix of prog and rock, I'd recommend Cardiacs and Mike Keneally. Checking out Angelo Branduardi next, it's a good sign that he has a page on ProgArchives (according to which "La pulce d'acqua" seems like a good place to start). Despite all the annoyances, the last two and a half years were amazing for discovering "new" music.
You've hit it on the head, mate, about needing to hear GG a few times in order to "Acquire the Taste," the title of their 2nd album. These guys were truly, freakishly original, the very rarest quality in music. No one did polyrhythms and medieval funk like Gentle Giant. If you liked that, you really should check out Steven Wilson's remastering of the lads playing "Giving it Back" live in the studio. This was just released and is stand alone amazing. On this one, it's medieval reggae. Seriously.

I am a huge Gentle Giant fan but, I find this song the most challenging song on the album - too many "Hails" for me :). The rest is ear candy. Try "Playing the Game" next.

So Sincere is a great cut. So too is Proclamation, but it's definitely the case that it's challenging at first. Makes one helluva first impression though!

They are amazing live indeed!
This a little bit more on their outside edge. The entire album is fantastic. Free Hand and Octopus are also good places to get your feet wet.
Their live performances were amazing. The way they would swap instruments - I think they played nearly 50 between them all and what they could double - but the thing about the live stuff... They were never content to just play it like it was on the original recording. And they certainly didn't need to thin out the parts. Instead the previous album becomes a 20 or 25 minute medley of all the you never would thought could have done live in the first place.

I saw G.Giant 6 times in the 70's and yes, they were amazing on stage as well as brilliant in the studio ^_^
A band I’ve heard of, in name only, for a long time but never checked out for whatever reason. I don’t know if I’ve just listened to a lot of prog or what, but I didn’t find this difficult, or hard to follow at all. That keyboard line is stuck in my head! Great stuff.
For someone who's only heard their Yeses and Rushes and Genesises, it could be a challenge, but it definitely toes an accessible line that full-blown avant-prog and Zeuhl acts get nowhere near. You're right about it being catchy, especially in the latter half. It's become a bit of a joke between my partner and I to quote that sliding keyboard at each other.

I love Gentle Giant. However, when you hear it for the first time, you will be surprised. That's why I find a song like "In A Glass House" more suitable to "start". The song sticks a little more to our usual listening habits without losing its originality.

The live version from 1973 is much better...I heard of Gentle Giant back in the 70's but never heard their music till much later when our keyboardist played their very last album Civilian and was my 1st introduction to them. I was very impressed by the album and was a mainstay at parties along with Yes' Drama both having songs about Cameras and came out about the same time and were both very commercial in their progressive way. However, it wasnt until the past 10 years that I listened to their earlier music which I found a bit difficult to digest as it was very dissonant and not very melodic like early Yes and Genesis which I loved. However, it grew on me and I really began to love and appreciate their musicianship and complex creativity along with outstanding grooves and syncopation, which I love. The drummer John Weathers face contortions doing this song live in 1973 is priceless!! He's definitely the face of Gentle Giant! LOL!!
GG have a cult following. One band with really talented musicians and songwriters. In a Glass House my favourite album amongst their early output. Ignore the last 2 albums...

@@lukerazer9131 I was a massive fan from their very beginning and first tour as support to Ten Years After. Loved them right up until 'The missing piece', half of which is okay, but it's when they began to lose their way and make compromises. The last two albums barely had two or three tracks on them that I would rate anywhere like their previous standards.
Back in 1974 Gentle Giant was just another rock band competing against all the others more popular at the time. Yeah, the ones I followed like Led Zep, Aerosmith etc. Once I heard this band they didn't grow on me until much later when I saw them in concert at the Shrine Auditorium in downtown LA. Together with Jethro Tull they are my favorite "prog rock" bands because their music is so complicated, intricate, but interesting melodically. Harri, this band is another rabbit hole and I hope they grow on you as much as they did me!
Love GG and this is one of my fave tracks.

While one may compare apples and oranges, it is quite difficult to compare GG with any other band. Please do a reaction to "Knots", preferable one of the live versions.
Cheers to the person who just shoved you into the deep end. They're actually primarily Scottish, and there were three brothers in the band up until there were only two. You're absolutely right that their live performances upped the ante with playful but balls-to-the-wall playing. Please react to their song The Advent of Panurge next. Also, a request to react to the song Weaver by Richard Dawson.
gg is a challenge but one worth taking.
Compare the sound of that piano to the Wurlitzer electric piano in Aspirations.

Happy to see some GG. They grow on you. Have a listen to the album "Three Friends." Solid gold. There are two tracks that have a studio cross-fade into one another. I saw them play the cross-fade live, twice. Off that album, which is laid out as a story, listen to "Peel The Paint."
Hopefully you've checked out some live performances...They replicate their studio work, nearly note for note...No easy task...:)

I can only recommend this to anyone who has been "burned" by formulaic progressive rock of the 70s. While these guys did extremely intricate stuff, they never lost their groove, it didn't feel constructed for complexity's sake.
Random Info dump: like other prog bands, they fell into the 80s trap and went for a more commercial sound in their last three (of eleven!) albums, so I wouldn't recommend these if you're new to the band. The singer on this track (Derek Shulman) went on to become a record executive who signed Bon Jovi, Dream Theater and Pantera among others.

@@robertwands9185 There weren't a lot of terms then, this was my era I saw GG many times starting in 1974'they backed up many bands in the US sadly but Jethro Tull Loved them and that's who I saw them open for the first time. GG was a band that members of Tull, Genesis, Yes and Zappa talked about and actually saw when they had time in those great 70s !! Yes I agree the term Art rock was used first, Prog started catching on in the late 70s at least in the Boston/NYC area. Thanks for posting : )

74 the Stranded tour thier first without Eno they played with a band
Started by a drummer who use to be with Free- "All Right Now "
just recalled his name Andy Fraser but the band he started was The Sharks,
he was on the first album but things became disruptive and he left
the sharks had 2 albums that were very good they use to back up the
headline band Grand Funk and would get standing ovations and calls
for encores. Chris Spedding was on guitar and the influence from Free
was evident in thier sound as they were use to being called son of Bad
Company as thats were other members went when free was disbanded. Also had all the early GG 70,s albums KCrimson ,Bob Calverts concept

@@robertwands9185 Great memories, we have the same like ets. I was lucky to have and older brother by 6 yrs and he played in local garage band then around Boston in the 70s Bass & Guitar. So We shared the same bedroom growing up and since the Beatles Cream, Hendrix, King Crimson, Yes, Genesis, Sabbathe etc I got it all. My first concert was with my Brother and older friends Yes "Close to the Edge" tour in 1972' I was 12 and I was Hooked ! He also worked in a major music store in Boston so we where lucky to get the best ticket and knew who was coming !
It was the best time and from 72' to mid 80s I saw every Great Prog & Rock band many times from Boston, Providence, CT to NYC as long as we and my friends could get to them 100 + easy. Top Prog bands are my Favs along with Rock bands like Thin Lizzy, Rush, Sabbath you know. Later year just Crimson, Rush, Yes and the Fantastic The Musical Box the Best Gen Tribute band the Gen members helped early on and went to !! 20 yrs plus for them playing Classic Genesis they are Amazing, it's like going back in time but honestly the play it Better !! I have ssen them 10+ times doing Genesis Foxtrot, SEP, and Lamb tour to perfection, the stage show all the period gear etc !! A Must see !! : )

my favorite GG album. First time I heard them, I hated it!
I'm here to support Silverfox & the Guvnor! As for the song, well I'm afraid it's not my cup of tea. I'd probably need a giant scone loaded with clotted cream and strawberry jam to make their tea semi-palatable for my tastebuds. :D They have a bit of that early Genesis sound goin' on, kinda herky-jerky, all over the place--which I also have trouble getting into. My prog-rock taste only goes as far as ELO, Rush, and The Moody Blues. Minus a few hit songs, bands like YES, Genesis (early), Tull, and even Floyd just don't do it for me.
They are not the instantly "Hey! That's super nice melody I'm just going to remember because it's beautiful." kind of band (with a few exceptions) but if you're a musician, you might have fun getting off over how they drop a guitar line and a piano line, doubled, in 7/8 and an eighth note apart while the bass and drums play in 6... And it still grooves the funk out.... you might get into it!

@@justsomejusstsome8994 The band never used any session musicians to play any instruments on their albums. A member of the band would learn how to play the instrument before the recording of the song in the studio.....that is what that means. Then the band would rearrange the song so that particular instrument could be played by that band member live. Each member of Gentle Giant could play more than one instrument because only the band members could create the sound that they wanted to record not a paid session musician. That kind of talent does not exist today's world of music. Most artists concentrate their energy on one instrument rather than play many instruments.
@@fredscott5644 I thought it was a shot at Steely Dan, another of my other favorites right up there with GG. The Dan made no qualms about getting the greatest studio musicians to bring to life their limitless talent as song writers. GG of course had no need for studio musicians because they were virtuoso multi-instrumentalists. Two different pathways to greatness, but both great, none the less.
I heard rumors that they were all well over 10 feet tall in their heyday.
