  • Free stuff? Count me in! How to get, prepare and use FREE rechargeable batteries. There are 4 steps covered in this video. Step 1: see how I get free Li-ion batteries, including 18650 cells, from easy salvage. Step 2:
learn how to make a low cost, portable power pack / charger for your cell phone and other wireless devices. Yes, safely use rechargeable Li-Ion batteries
even for smart phone power when and where you need it. You can even use the very popular 18650 cells. You can make a basic, rechargeable battery pack for less than $2 (see parts list below)! Step 3: see how to create a multi-tool that works as a battery tester, battery charger & a portable power pack all in one! Step 4: how to put it all together to save you money when you buy new tools, products and gadgets.

Key parts used in the phone charger include:
    - Step up power module to change the battery output into the 5v needed to charge a phone. I got the one used in the video on Amazon (DROK Ultra Small Mini DC Power Module; part #090399).
    - Charging board - TP4056 w/protection circuit module - "Makerfocus 10pcs TP4056 Charging Module 5V Micro USB 1A 18650 Lithium Battery Charging Board with Protection Charger Module" ($0.90 each on Amazon). The TP4056 w/protection circuit module prevents overcharging and over discharging batteries.
    - Project box from Amazon - "VNDEFUL 5pcs black waterproof plastic electric project case" (3.94X2.36X0.98)
    - Plastic case used for project box ($0.50 on Amazon)
    - Quick connector / terminal block - "30Pcs, 2P CH2 Quick Connector Cable Clamp Terminal Block Spring Connector Wire LED Strip Light Wire Connecting" ($0.20 each on Amazon)
Key parts used in the basic, $2 charger include:
    * Charging board - TP4056 w/protection circuit module ($0.90 on Amazon)
    * Plastic case used for project box ($0.50 on Amazon)
    * Push button on/off switch ($0.35 on Amazon)
    * Quick connector / terminal block ($0.20 on Amazon)
Please note that some items were bought in multiples to get this price per unit. Salvaged parts & materials include the Li-ion batteries from old cell phones and scrap wire.

WARNING: Li-ion batteries can have quite catastrophic failures if they are not handled properly. In addition to the warnings in the video make sure to do some extra research on your own if you are not used to working with
these types of batteries. Key notes: do not puncture, crush, short or otherwise mishandle these batteries. Fire and/or explosion can easily occur. Working with electronics, rechargeable batteries and electric DIY comes with risks. Only proceed if you are confident in your skills and safety techniques. You have been warned; you are fully responsible for any and all results of your actions should you attempt to recreate any of the actions

This is my first time seeing your vids. Great way to save lots of money! Those little flashlights will work for hours and hours. I've been doing same thing for years.

Most laptop or portable dvd players, etc. power packs I have access to are generally completely.....wont even hold a charge......dead. is there a way to recondition certain battery modules? Nobody I know has any interest in giving me something like a laptop battery pack that still, for the most part, works. Great video, hope all is going well.

[Ugh... Sorry, another lost response] My comment was two fold. First, I have found that most packs identified as dead simply do not work for their given purpose. But if the pack is made up of multiple batteries/cells then often only one or two of the cells has gone bad but the rest can be recharged and used individually. Second, I have seen claims made about reconditioning batteries to bring them back to life but I do not have any direct experience with that. In my experience, if I can't get a cell to hold a charge then I am not able to safely get it back in working order. I have tried but the charge process results in a battery or charger (or both) getting very hot.
Thank you so much for your continued viewership and commentary. I really do appreciate it and look forward to your feedback!
