Absolutely. I came up in the '80s and remember kids flunking out and having to repeat grades. By the time I got to high school in the early '90s, they were passing illiterate dopes just to get rid of them. Been going on for decades now.

To answer the obesity question, as someone who was formerly obese and was always hungry, consuming a lot of empty calories will do it. People in the US will make a meal out of stuff intended only for snacking, not realizing they're not getting protein and fiber things that help you stay full (not to mention any micronutrients). Foods high in sugar and low in fiber metabolize faster, giving you a burst of energy all at once and then you crash while foods higher in fiber release the energy slower over time. Because of the diet people are eating a lot of junk then getting tired, being tired people get less exercise. Then, because they aren't eating anything substantial, as soon as their stomach is empty in about an hour or two, they're eating again.

The obesity and diabetes epidemic in America correlates directly with the development of the USDA Food Pyramid in the late 70s. Americans went from eating mostly whole foods meat & potatoes diet with the very occasional dessert, to eating a diet that is 80% carbohydrates mostly processed self-stable foods because of the food pyramid that suggests eating 12 servings of grains, 4 to 6 servings of fruits & vegetables, and very little animal foods. This is exactly the opposite diet that sustained the evolution of mankind when we were hunters and gatherers. And over the years there has been much really bad dietary guidelines being developed like all of these so called "heart healthy" fats that it turns out are actually quite toxic and they are made by processing seeds and grains that contain no oils with Hexane (a neuro-toxin). Following that advice came the advice to eat 6 small meals a day rather than 3 meals a day with no snacking. Well, 6 small meals a day is the directions on how to make someone develop diabetes. Each time you eat carbohydrates, your blood sugar rises, and insulin rises to help process the glucose from what you have eaten and the energy you don't need - the insulin stores in your fat cells. When you eat several times a day, your blood sugar and insulin levels are kept high and this causes insulin resistance and diabetes over time - it also causes you to continually gain weight over time. You cannot lose weight when your blood sugar and insulin levels are high. If you google images of Americans at the beach in the 1960s or 1970s you will see very few fat people. The food pyramid wasn't created for a healthy population. The food pyramid was created and is still managed by the United States Department of Agriculture USDA - to support the farmers ability to sell their cereal crops to food manufacturers for a decent profit. To this day - their Dietary Panel is always comprised of members of Big Agriculture, Big Food, and Big Pharma. When Organizations like the Nutrition Coalition were allowed to present hard science to them last year, they gave them 3 days to present dozens of well documented studies and food trials for reversing disease with a proper human diet - and they were thanked and sent on their way and the committee ignored all of their recommendations.

Hi again. I've already replied to your outstanding comment and someone else approved my few supportive words today. I wanted to add this observation. I was fortunate enough to have traveled all over the 🌎 World many years ago. Europe, Mid East and Central America. They do NOT have obesity problems. Their diets, the walking they do, not drinking sodas and eating junk food.Even walking while eating is unheard of. A meal time is precious to them. French public schools give their children a nutritious delicious 4 course meal. Lunch time is one hour. In fact, the countries that started opening American fast food restaurants were alarmed at how quickly their population started gaining weight. It was so refreshing to see healthy hair, skin and body weight in the 16 countries I visited. Even their restaurant food portions were HALF what we serve here. ( The whole leftovers " doggy bag" "take home " phenomenon is an AMERICAN thing. As is "All you can eat " BUFFETS. Absurd. Of course Obese people love buffets and go back for seconds or thirds. I'm so tired of hearing health care professionals call obesity a " Disease ". No...it's just overeating "more than your fair share" and it's just an undisciplined person lacking self love. I live in a city with a great downtown District with loads of restaurants of all kinds of cuisine. I don't eat out anymore. I always get sick the next day. Always. Clearly they are using processed foods out the can or jar in everything they prepare. This is crazy. Plus non stop pharmaceutical commercials to reverse the damage we do to our bodies. You don't even see commercials like that in other countries. Life expectancy in our country will surely decline. Again, thank you for your narrative. P.S. my mother never kept candy or sweets in the house. A 1960's Mom that knew better. We weren't even allowed to go Trick or Treating. She said it's all garbage and bad for you. We never complained. She made sense. Happy New Year. Best wishes.

Canada has more food regulations than the US, but we have a lot of our food imported from the US, and I would suggest the additives and preservatives in a lot of premade food or canned food can damage your metabolism, in addition to all the sugar and salt in virtually everything. You can't even buy a can of chickpeas for a hummus without having to make sure you've got the "low sodium" kind. It's hard to escape, even if you're technically making everything from scratch. We don't have "pink slime" here because it's banned, but there are plenty of other imported things from down south and even things that are allowed here that are full of chemicals. My guess is that those chemicals do things like lower your metabolism, and increase your appetite so you don't know when you've had enough, in addition to lowering energy levels so you don't exercise as much. The world has also changed. More people have jobs sitting at a desk than actual physical labor. I used to be a competitive swimmer and I've always had weight problems. Very often I don't eat very much at all because I get teased. I also have chronic pain and a physical disability, so just getting out of bed is hard for me. I'd love to eat organic salads every day, but I'm not rich and sometimes a package of noodles that costs me a little over a dollar Canadian is what I'm doing just to save money. It's brutal.

A combination of fast food diets and lack of activity makes us obese++! In the US parents and adults themselves order food delivered and sit in front of their video games and computers. In my day when we got out of school, we changed into play clothes and went outside and played with the neighbor kids until the street lights came on then went into dinner, did homework, maybe 1 hour of TV, then to bed. There were no cell phones, computers, or video games, h*ll we only had 5 TV channels and needed rabbit ears (TV antennae on the back of the TV!) to get those channels. I'm 65yo and have seen these changes come to pass. It saddens me.❤

Hi, American here. So, diet is 85% responsible for weight issues. Activity is great for cardiovascular health, mental health, really anything internal. But as far as weight gain goes, it's the food. Here in the US, quantity is king. It's appalling how much food you get at restaurants. It seems great because of its value, but who needs to eat that much in one sitting? And I am, unfortunately, also a member of the Clean Plate Club. I'm working on it.
Another factor is industrial farming. Even "whole foods" are becoming less nutritionally dense than foods from 50-plus years ago because of farming practices. The animals we eat are being fed hormones and antibiotics at an astounding rate. The veggies are less nutritious because industrial farms plant too densely and don't rotate crops.
But mostly, we eat an insane amount of food here.

Hi Kabir! What he says about the testing is 100% true! It's one of the reasons I got out of the teaching profession. In the years they do the testing, you basically spend all of your class time teaching how to take the test. While you don't give your students the actual test to study, you use the same questions that will appear on it, just in a different order. After the test is finally given, you are weeks behind where you should be in your curriculum because you spent all that time "teaching the test" Another problem teachers face is being caught in a three way vice. You have the parents, the students and the administration all blaming you for the kids not learning. I was fortunate enough to have smart kids (my own kids) who were able to qualify for more challenging programs offered by the school district.
As for fat people, they are always trying to put the blame on the food, not the people who eat it! You get fat by taking in more calories than you burn. It's true that some folks have sluggish metabolisms, but just think of it as being more cost efficient. It's like having a car that gets 40 miles to the gallon vs one that gets 20 mpg. You don't keep trying to put gas in a car that already has a full tank. Luckily, I'm very active and have a physically demanding job, so I don't have to worry too much about my weight, which is a blessing during the holiday season!

One of the main contributers to obesity in the United States is that starting in the 1970s food manufacturers found high fructose corn syrup. It was 1/4 the cost of sugar and so they started using it to replace sugar. As a result of the highly processed sweeteners people started eating and drinking more and more empty calories and exercising less. Diabetes was almost unheard-of back then and now there are 34 million diabetics in the country. Countries that have limited or outlawed high fructose corn syrup have much healthier citizens and a much lower percentage of diabetes and related ailments.

Fructose is fruit sugar, it's no worse than maltose, glucose, sucrose, dextrose, lactose or any of the other -oses. It being a monosaccharide enters the bloodstream a little quicker than a disaccharide but only by a short amount of time. With or without sugars, the only way to keep from getting fat is to take in no more calories than you expend.

George takes it to the eddge BUT he's spot on about the education system . I went through in the 70'&80's and we had accellerated programs for the "Brains" even my daughter benefitted from a "Gifted" program however all those are gone for fear of making the others feel bad. it's sad really the dumbing down of America and many other countries

I'm 75 yrs. old so obviously I've been eating American food a long time. I was a little too thin most of my life inspite of drinking a soft drink and eating a candy bar every afternoon and having dessert. Part of the reason is heredity, but I believe its mostly about exercise. Children played outside until dark. We had mandatory physical education for an hour in school. As an elderly person my weight is normal but I have never been obese. I walk or hike with my dogs every day.
When I went to school you had to sit down, shut up and do as you were told. Now it seems to be about entertaining the children. In higher grades they don't memorize anything or learn to spell but are allowed to use their iPhones or tablets instead of learning. Only self motivated children learn anything.
Journalists on tv knew proper grammar and pronunciation because it was a requirement of their job. Anything written for public publication was edited for grammar and spelling. I cringe at what I hear and read now.

Here in the US, I think there are three issues that have led to the obesity levels. 1) The food pyramid was really poorly designed and misinterpreted by most people. The way it was presented, you were supposed to have mostly eat Carbohydrates & avoid fats. 2) we haven’t learned to NOT mess with our damn food supply. We add this, take out that (fats), and then add sugars to make it still palatable. And 3) we use Sugar in waaaay too many things. Sugar is in almost every food we purchase.
Education: when I was a student in the 80s & 90s, passing was above 70%. When my daughter started middle school, I was blown away that the passing grades were above 60%. Worse, I remember taking Algebra I & II, geometry, and intro to Trig & Calculus in high school. When m y daughter was in high school, they were only required to have Algebra I & Geometry for “high level” maths. They only offered Algebra II as a class for CP classes. A high school diploma used to actually be worth something, now it just means you are able to go to college to learn what you should have learned in HS.

My best friend is the same height, he was 250lbs when me met and, although he's dropping weight now, he topped the scales at well over 400lbs at one point. Everything he says is true. It isn't only Corporations that fund the politicians, the unions do also - the Teacher's unions are among the worst. And now that the libs are pushing DEI, they no longer have to provide better schools in urban areas - rather than smaller classes, tutors, better qualified teachers they simply removed testing and grades in many areas. If you show up you pass - no need to study and no accountability for the teachers actually teaching students. Less than 15% of all students in the United States that attend Public Schools graduate from high school at grade level, most don't even graduate at the 8th grade level. To make matters worse - the democrats what to abolish home schooling, private schools, and charter schools. I don't know how to wake people up.
