  • Thought it was high time for a little Intro to me and my farm. Problem is, when you get your friend to ask the questions you get sidetracked. Like 42 minutes of side-tracking. I think I got it condensed the best I could. But seriously, we could do this all day.

    Oh Sandi this is so precious. I lost the only video I had of my late son. I hope you watch this from time and find great comfort.
    How proud Amy would have been, its September 2023 and you have 1.04 Million subscribers and are loved by people from all over the world. 💜

    So good to see and hear Amy again. Hard to believe it's 3 years already since you lost her, to me you were always the "daffy duo" when you were together. If I miss her this much you must be heartbroken. God bless Amy, you are missed greatly

    Regarding treatment of mastitis: Even late stage mastitis can be treated. But, systemic antibiotics will not go across the udder wall into the affected area, and externally applied balms only help the external skin. A mastitis infection is an infection in the mammary gland. So, there are inexpensive products sold at every feed store. One is an intermammary infusion called "Today", which is for milk cows that you want to continue milking, but can be used on goats and sheep. The alternate is called "Tomorrow" and will cause the mammary to stop producing milk. Every swollen udder feels hard. You have to milk her out then infuse the product, using 1/2 of the tube each 12 hours. I do 4 treatments. Of course, the lambs are removed and forced onto the bottle. If no improvement after 4 treatments, I have found the following to work: Crush 3 garlic CLOVES (not the whole head), mix with water and 1/4 cup applesauce. Put in a syringe and cause her to swallow it. Do this twice a day. On the second day, when you are emptying the udder prior to the next infusion of Tomorrow, you will smell garlic in the milk. Garlic has a natural antibiotic in it and will kill some strains of mastitis. It gets across the udder barrier. Worked for me with a tough goat case. On the other hand, you might not have time, thus finding it easier to put her down than heal it. No easy task to milk a wildish 250 lbs sheep. Big difference. No judgement. Just sharing

    OMG Sandi, I hope you create more videos like this. I learned sooooo much from this video!!
    Btw, something you may or may not know ... vitamin D3 is made from sheep's wool. Not coincidentally, most people in the world are either very low in or are vitamin D deficient. Keeping in mind that veganism is growing exponentially worldwide and that the only other supplement source of vitamin D is fish oils which vegans don't eat, that makes sheep's wool a highly valuable commodity. Another great reason to love sheep!!

    • @AkkaVoskuil
      @AkkaVoskuil Před 4 lety +3

      Wouldnt vegans not take vitamins made from sheeps wool either? :S

    • @spottedtime
      @spottedtime Před 4 lety

      Actually about the fish oil thing, it will vary from one vegan to another because I’ve known some people who are vegan and do eat fish, while I also know a vegan that won’t even touch foods or vitamins that have any animal-by-productions, like animal fat and probably anything with sheep’s wool. This is due to that, for some reason, some vegans don’t consider fish as an animal. Also you can get vitamin D from being out in the sun. But still that’s interesting about the sheep’s wool used as another source of Vitamin D.

    • @tammysarrazin7078
      @tammysarrazin7078 Před 4 lety

      @@spottedtime the problem with getting vit. D from the sun is the timing only at a certain time of day and only for a certain amount time can you really get the vit. D to penetrate the skin.......... look it up.......... a channel i watch the kids have Alopecia Areata (sp) and she has it down to a second for the rays to help her kids

    • @Seleuce
      @Seleuce Před 4 lety +2

      @@tammysarrazin7078 Vitamine D is not actually in sunlight! It's produced inside your skin from cholesterol with the help of UVB-rays from sunlight which provide the energy. Fair skin is many times more efficient in producing it than dark skin is. Probably the main reason why people from the Northern hemisphere have developed pale skin in the first place, because there is less sunlight.

    • @1hollig1
      @1hollig1 Před 2 lety

      Really? I never knew that! My body doesn’t like to produce vitamin D (neither does my son’s body or my dad’s body) even though we all love being in the sun. I get horrible body aches and could sleep all day long if I don’t take vitamin D supplements.

    • @SandiBrock
      @SandiBrock  Před 6 lety +1

      I think there are some hair sheep that yield decent for meat... Not sure how they are to get to heavy weights. The ones I am familiar with are smaller framed, but I think the Dorpers carry some nice muscling in their back ends... Maybe some viewers who know better can comment??

    • @carabyleveldt
      @carabyleveldt Před 4 lety

      I don't know much about sheep, but I know here in South Africa the "meat sheep" are mostly dorper and meatmaster. They are both haired sheep. I don't know if wool or hair has an effect on meat production.
      I also suppose that in the area I live (kalahari=super hot) we prefer haired sheep because of the weather.

      @christinesbetterknitting4533 Před 2 lety +1

      On occasion, if a sheep has recently lambed and you can cover the adoptee lamb with the fluids of the ewe's real lamb's amniotic sac so it encourages the momma ewe to think of the stranger lamb as her own. Sandi says you need a very willing lamb as well as a very maternal ewe to make it work.

      Its a plastic device inserted to stop the sheep from having a cycle and then when they come out, it makes it so they all cycle and go into heat at the same time. No hormones needed. Yes i know this is 4 years old but this is the correct answer for Cidrs
