Bonham has sometimes been criticized as a "heavy-handed" drummer, usually by people that don't really know what they're talking about. Sure, he would bash his kit to bits, but he also played some of the most intricate and difficult rhythms in all of rock music. If you lend an ear to the drums in this song, you really get a sense of his skill and craft.

One of my favorite Zeppelin songs! Bonzo's drumming on this song is next-level. When I was in college, I used to crank this song up and play the air drums to it. Interestingly enough, Today I am a hospice nurse, and some of the things Plant sings in the lyrics are actually common sentiments at end of life. So the perfect hospice rock and roll song!
What he's saying in the breakdown section is "Oh my Jesus" and later, when it sounds like he's saying "Oh Georgina" what he's really saying is "I'll touch Jesus."

As great as Jason Bonham was at the O2 Reunion (and I agree he was great!), compare "In My Time of Dying" from the O2 Reunion with this version (recorded live, in the studio, in one take) with John Bonham on the drums. There really is no comparison. Jason is a great drummer, but NOBODY hit the drums like John Bonham. He drives this song like a locomotive in ways that no other drummer before or since has. One of Zep's most monumental tracks.

To think, I used to skip past this song until around 1990 when I got a job that I could play all my cassettes and later cd's at all day. I skipped passed it because of the long slow start. It was just easier to play the entire album than to skip past stuff. So once I stopped skipping past this song it quickly became an all time favorite. I think he is saying "Oh my Jesus." This is an old gospel song so that makes sense he would be saying that. Read the words to the song and even then it's often not clear what he says at different points. But the song is about a man dying and going up to heaven and I guess the rapture he is feeling while it is happening.
If you didn't like this song, no more Custard Pie for you young man. LOL.

I love Bonzo's drumming on this track, but then again, I say that after every Led Zep song, lol. I forgot to mention in a previous recent reaction when you said something about you like to listen to it afterwards a few times and focus on different instruments, that is the sign of a great musician. That and the Curiosity to see how all the pieces of the arrangement fit together, like a puzzle. At least on good stuff. It's extremely important and I go a bit further than that, if it's something that I have any real interest in I'll do it just like you described but then additionally, I will take a few more listings to start focusing on different combinations of instruments and kind of just move my attention around and zoom in on one instrument and then soon back out just enough to see what's going on with one or other two instruments and then when I'm all done I try to listen to the whole thing like I've never heard it before and not analyze it but just enjoy it.

''Oh my Jesus'' is what he's chanting. I never knew until I checked the lyric sheet. A lot of his singing is hard to understand as that of many singers, but it doesn't matter as the singing voice is an instrument to me

I love this track. When I was learning to play slide guitar, this was the first song I learned. Heck of a good time to play. Requires a good drummer to perform Zep though.
When you're discussing a song, "Going back and forth like that," would be the dynamics of the song, I believe. That word covers everything from the weight with which a guitar player picks, to drumming weight, tempo and vocal aggression.
Riffs vs Solos. The riff is the main hook of the song, the one or two common sections that (usually) the lead or rhythm guitarist plays over and over. A solo is one musician doing his own thing while the rest of the band backs him up. It's basically the front man/lead singer taking a step back and letting someone else take front and center for a while. Great time to get a drink if you're fronting.
    1:20 -1:27 Main Riff.
    6:03 - 6:45 Guitar Solo

He's saying 'Oh, My Jesus', and then later it's 'I'll touch Jesus' (right after 'feels pretty good up here').

Another epic track that came from an 60 year old Bob Dylan track. Listen to the original and see what Zep did with it. The same applies with when the levee breaks off the 4th album and when you get to Nobody's fault but mine on their next album Presence.

Jimmy Page seems to love dramatic pauses in many of his songs which is not like any other band I can think of. I wonder if anyone has ever asked him about that.

Led Zeppelin was HEAVILY influenced by Southern (read African American) blues. This song might be Led Zeppelin's best example of skilled musicians taking some cool historical music and modernizing it.

Hi Silas,Robert sings "Oh,my Jesus! Jesus is going to make my dyin´ bed ",it´s a sort of religious song, recorded in the 1930es by Blind Willie Johnson as it was "Nobody´s fault but mine" in the Presence album

A "riff" is a bit of melody or chord sequence that gets repeated, and gives structure to the rest of the song. Usually it's played in the background, and the rest of the music is built around it. An easy example is the opening to "Whole Lotta Love" -- notice that the guitar part from the intro is repeated while all the other instrumentals and vocals are added on top.
A "solo" is when the guitar (or any instrument) takes center stage, and can be as structured or unstructured as the musician wants.
