Am I alone in noticing this remastered version has been somehow "de-Spectored"? The version I'm used to has much more reverb and therefore inherent epicness. Its still a classic track mind, it's just now it seems more intimate.

No, thats wrong. The song here is from Scott`s old friend John Stewart. They knew each other since they were Teens.In the late 60s he had in London a bad accident and then went home to the USA.
this movie is purely up to interpretation but I agree with Grilley's comment: "At the end he thinks he finally succeeded which is what the car crash represents, however he gets the key and decides to go back to the sex show and fall back into his old ways thus the spider returns."
