Had to fight with my local shop and specialized to get warranty after the shop lied to me
Now I’m going to be 7 weeks without a bike, very disappointed
I was probably never going to buy another specialized but this 4 year warranty may change that.

I think they should of extended the warranty on the 2021 model as well. That would have made it easier to decide if buying one or not. Don't now how mutch you can trust this small fixes to be the solution.

To answer your question no it’s not worth it at all.
In Canada I have 6 months of riding and 2 of them in the prime season have been lost, so at almost $13,000 and only 4 months of riding it’s a horrible deal

"Too much knowledge is a bad thing" thats a red flag for me. And an extend 2 year warranty means the motor is probably shit, and the warranty is to avoid a class action lawsuit. Companies don't do this out of the kindness of their heart they do this because they're avoiding a lawsuit anyone who believes this to be a kindness is an idiot.
Specialized is a for-profit company they're not a non-profit they wouldn't do anything like this unless they have a lot of bad Motors and they were threatened with a class action lawsuit.

with Brose there seems to be 5 main weak points!
1, Brose fitted a lovely water tight seal to cover the right-hand crank bearing, but water still enters the left-hand bearing.
2, Water regularly enters the needle roller bearing between the crankshaft and the sprocket carrier. (This is normally when you hear of people complaining that their pedals are stiff to turn backwards) Sadly, if this is not addressed quickly, it tends to destroy the bearing surface on the crankshaft.
3, There are two clutch bearings inside the motor called sprag bearings, one works when you pedal, one works when the motor assists. The bearings Brose use have plastic cages to keep the sprags in place. These plastic cages crack and the bearing starts to fail. (This normally manifests itself by a slipping sensation through the pedals and sometimes noise and notchy feeling through the pedals.
4, Drive belt tensioner failure. This is where the drive belt tensioner actually snaps, shortly followed by the belt stripping. (Felt as instant failure and loss of drive)

Look at Ebike motor centre videos.
The main problems are Clutch and shaft bearings failing because they didn't seal them good enough to stop water and dirt getting into the crankshaft. The earlier models had shit drive belts that wore out more easily and frayed. Hopefully the Brose 2.2 has improvements that prevents water or dirt getting in. Whatever you do, just be careful around the motors when washing, cleaning or using compressed air as you can push dirt/water into the crankshaft and its game over.

As long as Specialized dealer are charging customers for the motor warranty stuff it's worth a shit...
And there are so many Specialized dealers out there that aren't as nice and friendly as the guys from berkshire cycles.
If you don't wanna buy a new bike you get treated like shit, and if you want them to replace your broken motor for free on warranty they just don't do it in many cases. For me warranty means that a product broken on normal use gets fixed FOR FREE by the manufacturer...
But thanks for the very informativ video!
Since you are hanging out in the forums too, you should also know about how lot's of people getting f**ked by their specialized dealers.
So it's absolutely not fair to say "specialized" takes care of their products, cause they don't do that at all. It comes all down to the specialized dealer you are dealing with.

Nice that Specialised publicly say they have had an issue with their motors. However it is no secret amongst the specialised riders there has been a problem. Some are on their third repair. Nice that they give an extra 2 years warranty. As a rider in the market to buy an ebike. Knowing i would have to keep replacing motors and then out of Warranty would cost me £600 a time for a new motor, as much as three times a year. Even with 4 years warranty , i would not commit to a bike that unreliable. To be fair this must be frustrating the hell out of Specialised and costing them a fortune. Not to mention customer confidence. Really pleased they are addressing the problem. But i will be waiting for the 2021 being out for at least 6 months and get feedback from users. Love the look of the Levo and Kenevo . But before dropping 4.5k on one.

  • @paullefko
    @paullefko Před 4 lety +16

He’s making a Steve Jobs statement, people are not riding it right...wtf. It’s a faulty motor and it’s very expensive. People don’t replace bikes every couple of years. These are very very expensive devices, failure is not an option, we should not be the testers, we are the riders. This has been a known issue for a while. I really don’t care for excuses as the end users.

    • @alexbiketester
      @alexbiketester Před 4 lety +2

However he has got a point about usage and testing. If you watch a beginner rider or "less good" ahem... rider they tend to push a bigger gear and ride along with a slow cadence. Most of the test riders are going to be better riders that use a higher cadence because of their more tuned riding style. Pre-empting climbs, changes and the like. I have more than 2500K on a "dodgy" motor. Then It was pedalled for about five mins in a big gear and boom motor broke. So there is actually truth to that point. I test bikes just like Rob, a lot of bikes. So I know how to ride them and not beat them with a stick. I ride them hard and push the limits but with more finesse. Ive seen very few problems with all brands in general. The biggest problem ive seen is the RXF fork from Ohlins loosing all the oil and stop working. They fixed that now...
The Specilaized team work hard and honestly failure is not an option for them. I had heard the rumours of the motors breaking but the long term test unit I had hadnt broken. A local shop had told me that they have been swapping units non stop, considering how hard I ride I was surprised and wondered why. FInnese on a bike does actually have a lot to do with how technology performs as on other brand stuff I can see when Ive had "issues" and Ive kept going because I didn't trash the drive train with bad shifting or strange behaviour.
The Bosch motors I have for example now over 2000 km on the new software as well. They are damm good will they break as well? Well ive spoken to Bosch, they havent seen any failures above normal yet.
Next Point yes they are expensive, absolutely and even discussing it is commercially a very sensitive thing for Specialized to do considering the potential vitriol flak they will get. As a tester I can see that you can be dammed either way and in general although you can respect the public and their purchasing power, its damm hard to create what companies create. Handling this issue is hard, My Apple laptop is for example on its 3rd screen.... so far....
Correcting the problem is hard, I will get a new motor and see what happens. Handling the problem is difficult its so easy to f up the situation more rather than fix it. So hats off to them so far.
The competition is tight nowm Specialized have to work hard to stay ahead they will do im sure that this problem will fade away and people will be happy in the end. In the meantime yes its dissapointing when your bike doesnt work and you paid 6000+ for the bike, anger rants and annoyance are going to be strong. So far though I have not tried a perfect product. Even the Turbo Levo, is not perfect, ignoring motor problems, however there are top tier products in the market and Specialized are in that top tier and will stay there.

Yes I've had a few issues with TCU and a motor and whilst it's been a mild inconvenience I have never thrown my toys out of my pram because I know the bike will be sorted. Whenever I am out on the bike I get asked how many motors I'm on now, I was over on Summer Lightning today and was chatting to a couple of guys on 2019/2020 Levo's about the warranty news, one of them said yeah but it takes a month to get a motor change (I won't say where he bought the bike but it wasn't from Chris). He seemed absolutely blown away when I said that most of the work done on the bike was done in the length of time it takes to walk down from Chris to Costa and get a coffee. The next comment was so, you're telling me they keep motors in stock.
I am more than happy to keep riding my Levo, well at least until the 170mm Levo/Kenevo hybrid comes out :-) and without a doubt any future purchases will be from Chris.

There was a happy ending when I happened to meet the right person in Specialized and he bent over backwards to make my bikes 100 . So I'm intrigued to hear that the issues are still happening with this company and don't get me wrong the bikes ride bloody great but I couldn't help thinking at the time I wished they had found and rectified the issues pre launch.PS as a kudos to Spec the bikes that I have purchased since I have always put the way that the Spec bikes ride and perform. I w'd never buy another bike with Brose motor whether they give you extended warranty or not. Chris is a nice chap but most he w'd do in most cases is to offer to replace the motor which costs you min £600+. I had a problem with broken belt and all he was prepared to do was to sell me a new motor. Buy a bike with Brose at your own peril. An extremely unreliable motor.

I have not had any problems with the bike at all except that the lead for the extender battery is not quite long enough with the suggested bottle cage and when replaced with a cage that is more appropriate is fine
The dealer I bought the bike from has been very good, but he is some distance away and when I went to a Specialist concept store for a software update the staff were very good but the owner suffers from a bitter and twisted attitude if the bike is not purchased from them. I was charged for the update which was not much but I thought the idea of a franchised dealership that there was not cost for warranty work. The concept dealer huffed and puffed about profit which is very unprofessional
I love the bike, it has made my cycling so much more enjoyable, but I do feel on my own if I have a problem and do not go back to the selling dealer.
This seems to be mirrored by other comments and the only way to get over the bad attitude is for Specialized to sort out their dealers
I think the point is proved by the fantastic owner of Berkshire cycles literally saying he is being hustled by other dealers because he is making a rod for their back by offering first class service

I have a Specialized Levo turbo expert carbon 2020 which I bought new in 2021. Now with 500 miles on the bike I am on my second motor and electric pack. Now the second motor has failed with less than 40 miles on it and nearly killed me in the process. I was in trail mode when it suddenly gave a sudden burst of power pushing my front wheel to the right, but unfortunately as I was on a narrow path with a steep drop to my right. As my front wheel dropped off the edge it sent me over the handle bars and I landed in thorn bushes 20ft below which combined with my protective equipment saved me from a lot more damage than a cracked rib I received. Unfortunately as I tried to make it back to where had parked my car the motor stopped giving assistance on three occasions with the third snapping the chain. The bike is now currently back with the bike shop which have also involved Specialized. I would love to know if any other owners have had an instance where there motor has given a sudden boost of power when not in Turbo mode.
Added note. The bike has now had a new third motor fitted and complete wiring harness. The shop has tested the bike and believe it’s fully repaired but my test will have to wait till I’ve recovered. The bike shop has been great in resolving the mechanical issues but now I’m in two minds weather or not to keep the bike or switch to a bike with the Bosch motor.
