Cars have been around now for just over a century and in that time, there has been a handful of people out there who have sparks of enthusiasm for cars that aren't always shared by everyone. Over time that handful of people have grown into a community and spread over multiple generations, but what does it mean to be a car enthusiast? What does it take? Today Alex sits down to discuss a topic debated by the masses, So You Want to be a Car Enthusiast.

The Top Five for new car enthusiasts:
1.) Any car can look cool if built right. If you like the base car, don't worry about it looking cool immediately.
2.) Building a car takes A LOT OF TIME, I've been building my 2000 Impreza for over a year now and I'm probably not even half done.
3.) Never make fun of or clown a build, even if you think it looks dumb.
4.) For most people, HP and torque simply don't matter.
5.) Wheels, tint, and wrap changes the entire look of the vehicle, if you're going for cosmetics, those should be your big ones.

This video made me question whether or not I’m a car enthusiast for a second lmao.
I realized that studying mechanics and working as a technician doesn’t make you a technician but it’s not always about just working as a technician. I enjoy fixing cars just as much I love drifting off-ramps. I thought my thing was grip racing, and I was damn good at it, when I was younger I dominated karting and sims and when I got my first car first thing I wanted to do was go to the track and set the track record, got pretty close to it But in one of those instances I changed cars, I first had an 02 S60 T5 manual and I had bought an 86 Corolla SR5, i wanted to see how the car felt and test its limits, I came in a little to quick for those tiny ass brakes and I slightly braked to aggressively and I lost the rear end while trail braking and in that moment I felt a euphoria. That’s when I realized that I wanted to drift. So I ditched grip racing and autox for drifting and I found my new passion. Am I les sod a car enthusiast now because I ditched one drive I got discipline for another? No. The true answer to this question lies in words them selves. Are you *enthusiastic* about *cars*?
    If yes then you are
    If not then you’re not
To be a car enthusiast you don’t have to enjoy driving and enjoy working on cars. It could be one or the other.
You can be a driver, mechanic, technician, designer, engineer etc. and as long as you enjoy doing it you are a car enthusiast.
Oh and being a driving enthusiast ≠ to being a car enthusiast.

To me being a car enthusiast means to learn about the cars that you come across and to respect those who put in time and money to design and build the machine that represents them (even if it is not to your taste). I gain my knowledge of cars and their history through many means, like the internet or talking to other enthusiasts.

Even as a teenager, getting my license and having a car was something I dreamed of and couldn't wait for. Now at 28, I have my license and a car, read all the articles on Super Street, Hot Rod, Truckin' Magazine, and Speedhunters, fawn over car videos online and love the sound of engines but even through all that, I still feel like I'm not a real car guy because I don't have a project car and can't afford one, and honestly can barely afford to keep my Tucson on the road. I feel like a poser in this scene because I don't have a project car to wrench on and don't even have any tools or somewhere to work on a car. I love cars more than anything but it honestly, feels like I'll never be a real car guy because I don't know if I'll ever be able to get a project car, garage or tools. It's a bummer, man.

I won't lie - I like quirky and different cars. It may not be fast, but if it looks interesting and tasteful, then I don’t mind it at all.
BattleCars with huge-ass off-roading tires? Yup! JDM/KDM Ricers? Sure! Itasha cars? Fellow weeb here checking in! Donks? Sure, I guess. Kia Soul owners? I had one - not gonna lie, I kind of miss my Kia Soul after I ended up trading it in. Might get another some day. My neighbor has a 2021 Soul, and I really dig it.
Point is that enthusiasts come in different shapes and sizes. Some like it fast and furious while others like it slow and low.
Me? I like cars that are simply and aesthetically built to look different or out of place, but still functional. In some ways, I see the car as a canvas and the builder paints that canvas with whatever mods that might look interesting, whether it’s a performance mod or a cosmetic mod. Hell, a passerby might post it on /r/Shitty_Car_Mods/ but as long I’m happy with how the build is turning out, then I really don’t care what the critics say about my ride.
Now if stuff falls apart while on the highway… well, I that’s a different story. Lost count of the number times I swerved around a random car part on the highway.

Hey! I used to own a kia soul too! Its nice to know I'm not the only enthusiast with one. Mine was a base 6 spd manual, sometimes I used to take the top of the air box off and go for little drives. The vvt sounds pretty sick without air box on lol

I'd still say the ONE thing we should require with cars is driving manual. If you can't drive manual, you lose out on enjoying most enthusiast level cars. That's a required skill tbh and whether you continue to drive manual or not is one issue, but you should know how to at least.

i get where you're coming from but i gotta disagree, as not all car people are into the same stuff that most people in the online car culture are, imo you still still be a car person and not give a shit about the manual

@Talking_Ben_ the point is you should KNOW how to do it regardless if you like it or not. It's a basic driving skill and as car enthusiasts we gotta know that much

A *car enthusiast* is a person who is *enthusiastic about the automobile* in general!
    Everyone has their preferences:
Is it japanese, german, italian, US american, ... kind of cars
    OR
    a specific brand(s)
    OR
    car style.
*Either way, at the end of the day that person still has an appreciation for other type of cars, doesn't matter the nationality, brand or style!*

I regret not getting into the hobby when I was younger because my dad tried, but with the family cars it was always repair, never much fun. And who wants to stand around outside in stale 95+ degree heat when I had my first Pentium?

You're not wrong with what you're saying.. Sad thing is I been to a couple meets recently and the way the game has changed as well as me aging is it seems like it's going to the kids.. But one thing that's true is I love cars regardless what age I am.. Never let anybody or anything get to you because there's always another way and you can find it, ask for help, look on groups or forums, change up your car or anything.. Good topic though, keep up the good work guys! :D

can you do a video of the best manual/v8 car to collect? Looking 20 years into the future, a manual car that is the best to garage, easy to work on myself, semi-reliable. I was thinking of the final v8 manuals, like blackwing, chevy ss, mustang.... but I started wondering which one would be the best to keep running for the next 20 years. No electrical gremlins, or hard to find parts. Thinking terminator mustangs, or WS6 TA.... GTO? Even ford lightnings. I am just wondering what manual v8 would age the best.

IK this sounds like a bizarre scenario but hear me out: I've been into cars even before I started playing video games (I was 5-6 years old when I started), but I've always been a "visionary" because I never had the skills IRL to be a proper mechanic.

No one talked smack about my low HP (which is changing very soon) or the fact that its a "girls car" they saw a slammed Miata with a duck bill spoiler and a hard top and was super happy to see it. just like I was happy to see some mustangs on bags.

It's hard to be a car enthusiast in a country with 180% taxation over MSRP on cars and most parts, and legal issue on performance modding cars, so it's just a window tint and some nice wheels and tires for my econobox, for me being a car enthusiast is doing what you can, within your means and enjoying your car.
