  • So it gets debated a lot, whether the Japanese BOSS pedals are better than the Taiwanese made ones, I thought I'd test this out with two OD-2 TURBO Overdrives I own. Now some pedals did go through changes throughout the years but the OD-2 wasn't one of them so lets test if they do sound different.
    Go visit Reverb to grab your own OD-2 (reverb.grsm.io...) or any other BOSS pedal (reverb.grsm.io....

    I was checking out the MIJ version because I saw it on Dutch Marketplace for 75 euro's. I sometimes just look for decent deals and I love the MIJ versions of Boss pedals, then I realized that I had a yellow Boss pedal. I took it out of my storage and it was the exact same 1985 version I was looking at and also the same type you have.
    They also had the Boss SD-1-4A Super Overdrive 40th Anniversary, I might try that one. Nice video btw.

    Underrated Boss pedal IMO, I think the MIJ definitely had the edge here!

      Agreed, I think the late 80s and 90s pedals are the best era of BOSS, unfortunately so many were discountinued.

    • @wbertie2604
      @wbertie2604 Před rokem +1

      Part of the difference might be that there was still a slight level mismatch - the MIJ was a hair louder.

    You are probably getting signal degradation/ change in signal by running the Taiwanese into the Japanese , much better would have been both running independently into the amp. Have you considered doing the same test but have the Japanese going into the Taiwanese?

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  Před 3 lety +1

      Yeah ive tried both and individually and most of the subtle differences are there, a better test would be with a loop switch like a lehle but they are fairly expensive. The buffers are decent on both

    This is the most interesting clip. The same product/model made from different country sounds differently. I guess the mfg can name them as different model.

    MIJ sounds to me a little fuller on bass range, MIT more flat. But using an equalizer pedal i bet I could make them sound the same.

  • @kentl7228
    @kentl7228 Před rokem +1

    I think that the Josh Scott from JHS point about comparing pedals by matching tones by sound and not taking notice of the knob position matters. The pedals may be identical but tolerance values of components, especially the wide tolerance range of potentiometers, matters. If the components within are the same, they should be able to sound the same as each other. Finally, the IC inside doesn't matter so much while many think it does, much to the amusement of TS808 vs TS9 circuit designers...
    Supposedly, these pedals are supposed to run on 12v instead of 9v. I dont necessarily mean to convey thst the tester here is ignorant ofnmy points, either.

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  Před rokem +1

      That is true, they do sound different both at different points and overall probably due to tolerance, there is an overall quality of sound difference (not just brightness or volume) but it is subtle and the amount of components could explain that. BOSS pedals used to use 12v because supplies werent regulated, internally they just were 9v but had circuitry to create regulated 9v from a 12v input. You can bypass this with a daisy chain and it operates normally.

    The OD-2 is quite a bit different and better to my ears. Fuller, more amp like. I had an OD-2 back when it first came out. I should never have sold it. The OD-2r isn’t the same at all.

    L'OD-2 n'est pas true bypass, la Japonaise se trouve boostée par la Tawanaise du coup, il aurait fallut tester les deux configs ;)

    Can I use it with the 9v adapter? I mean I have more pedals but they are 9v not 12

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  Před 2 lety +1

      If it is daisy chained yes. The 12v goes into circuitry that drops it to 9v so with a daisy chained 9v supply it bypasses this otherwise it works with a battery. That said i'd try to grab the od-2r, 9v and more volume plus you can footswitch the turbo mode.

    • @littlebritain64

      May I use it as unique effect in my amp without harming it with a walmart ac/dc set to 12 Volts or 9 Volts to taste?

    • @niallio77
      @niallio77 Před 10 měsíci +1

      For a few quid, a techie can change the diode in it for you, so that it runs properly at 9V.

    I think I prefer the sound of the Taiwanese, wich is surprising, but in this case I like the softness. BTW, the Carl Martin TOD is entirely based on improving on the sound of Dizzy Mizz Lizzy guitarist Tim Christensen's OD-2, which he used right up to their second album. Just that one pedal

    Looks like you’re running them both at 9v, you do know they are supposed to be run at 12v, right? At 9v they starve a bit, at 12v they sit up and dance.

    • @JimijaymesProductions
      @JimijaymesProductions  Před 9 měsíci

      Using a daisy chain actually bypass the down voltage converter so they work at 9v properly. Though I believe here I switched my power supply to 12v. Either way they were working at full potential.
