They said from early on that it'd only be one world for the launch and that world creation would come later. I'm perfectly happy with that as it means they can put more attention on other features. All I hope for is the ability to customise that one world (excluding landscaping) by being able to place trees and decorative objects in the world outside of lots. They've shown that custom lots is a thing, so that already puts it above that 'other game' franchise.

yeah exactly. I think they're doing this development the right way. First you get the core features solidly worked out. After that you can make a bunch of different worlds and extra stuff. It would be dumb to do it the other way around, aka, releasing a buggy mess of a game but it has like 100 different worlds and buildings but none of the features work right

There will be less costs from development that are dependant on the success of the release to recoup which can be put into future development.

I don’t really care how large or small the open world/neighborhood are as long as it’s actually interactive and purposeful. Like in sims 4, there’s these huge spaces of unbuildable areas with prop dressings that the sims can’t do anything with. An open neighborhood could easily be more dynamic with just a group of residential lots, a nice park/community space and a strip mall style building with rabbit holes to different businesses.

I'm also hoping that money will be much better handled than in the Sims games - that they aren't irretrieveably millionaires in after a week. I want my Sims to be more natural, start off their working lives broke like most normal people do. And if NPCs have personalities and autonomy and lives of their own, that would be fun to play.

I think a crucial aspect will be how immersive the open world is, how real it feels to us as players.....and that will also depend on how deep the personalities of the Para's will be- how individualistic and unique they feel , that would really breathe life into the open world format of the game. As long as the core foundation of the game is solid, it wouldn't matter if there are updates later because the base product feels worthwhile in itself.

Yesterday I played on Greymont Bay and Plymouth Isle, two very big worlds with many details to every single unique house and I had no lag for around 6 hours of playing. Open World with a lot of features and details is possible according to my experience. As a matter of fact I experience more lag in TS4 with the closed world, it's all in the coding...

I like that the laid back vibes the games gives are also reflected in some of the animations, like sitting on the counter or under a tree or walking around barefoot. Not really what this was about ^^ thank you for covering it nevertheless, Erin. I have no open world thoughts as the term can mean so much. Personally I really liked the opener world of Sim's Werewolves GP, it had a nice level of things going on. It will be interesting to see the size of their starter open world. And if it will require a move if they go to another world (where they lose their contact with the original one, like in TS3 when you didn't go on vacation but moved to Monte Vista.) If you can use other "worlds" as extensions of the original one (like we can do with TS4 where you can move between "worlds" and not lose your connections, and can go to school in one "world" while living in another), then it would be ideal. But it all boils down to how it actually works once we get the game. (I love speculation, but you can only go so far with it.)

To be honest I trust the Paralives team and their outlook on how the game will be, I'm even a patreon of theirs (for 3 years? i don't remember) and i don't check in on their updates every friday i checked theirs once a month maybe. They have proven again and again to me they know what they are doing with their sneak peaks on youtube & twitter of different features, They always go above & beyond my expectations. So what im trying to say is if they don't put a feature in i'm not gonna be angry with them, i feel like they would have a reason why they couldn't or it could be just because they cant, they are still a small indie team. Most good recent games add play options these days, anyway. They might just simply add a little control/automate toggle option in the Paramaker. This makes me want to move forward with trying to make my own life simulator -- as many misgiving as I have about pulling it off. As excited as I am about Paralives and as eager as I am to try it out when it launches, in many ways it does seem to take things in a different direction than I would. But really that is what the "dollhouse life simulator" (or what I often just call simslikes) needs is not a "Sims killer," not the replacement of one game to rule them all with another game to rule them all, but rather several available and well know games with different approaches that best fit different playstyles.

@@SimmerErin I'm not sure Paralives needs to change its core direction -- it seems like its going to be a game that knows what it wants to be. Several ideas doing a different take on the core idea would be a good thing.
Where there is a difference it seems, from descriptions and the name itself that is trying to be a game that makes playing a para an immersive and in depth experience -- almost like living a side life in an immersive open world. In contrast my own ideas are more about how to do long-running rotational play with a somewhat realistic simulation.
      Sort-of my impression so far:
The Sims 4: Creative outlet to tell stories you make up
Paralives: Immersive roleplaying or everyday life (???)
      My Idea: More a semi-strategic god-game
At this point though all I have is the beginning of a prototype for generic simulation game camera controls and several pages of notes on a possible personality system -- not even a name or the confidence to invest too much time.

I am also concerned out some things I didn't think about until recently trying to play The Sims 3 rotationally. Some things just don't work with unplayed sims in an open world where time is always running everywhere. Notably, self-employed sims don't work when uncontrolled, artists only paint and farmers only farm without a player to tell them too. How to solve that is also not completely clear.

TBH i didnt mind the small loaded areas for sims, BUT I wish they made it so different neighbourhoods in each world loaded together. like all the houses or venus in one neighbourhood was loaded and you could walk to the surrounding places without hitting a loading screen. i feel that would of been a way better combo of both open and loading screens. It would allow u to see your neighbours in their house in front doing activities our having a cook out in their backyard, see the club down the street or restaurant busy. be able to walk down the street to the store or park. I think that would of been amazing. OR this is stretching it, making every world they release like just sulani all open and a loading screen if u go to a world like strangerville, etc.

For instance, taking a Sims and my own real-life example. Going from a White belt to a Black belt in any martial art, at a reasonable pace. With the para's skills at it taken into account. After listening to this, one feature that I’d really like to see is the ability to be able to toggle off just about any gameplay feature.
Sims, Paralives, etc, it would just be so nice to have. It would be nice if it also included the ability to toggle things off for specific sims/paras and also adjust the frequency of certain actions.
It could be used to toggle off features certain players don’t want- annoyances like playing on the phone too much, potential triggers for a player, things that the player doesn’t feel like is in character for a specific sim/para or plays a role in their backstory.
Using sims for the sake of comparison since occults aren’t confirmed yet for Paralives, toggles could turn that kind of thing off. So people who want werewolves without the werewolves and so on, it’s nice to have!
Certain immersion features like acne or periods that not everyone wants to deal with in their gameplay. Or content that parents may want to leave off for their younger kids that might be slightly violent or racy.
Like just give me a million options to toggle things on/off, it would be so useful!!

Go back to the original base game before add ons free downloads, etc. Sims 4 out of the gate was very bland. And... in all honesty... with all the DLC and free adds ons it's still quite bland. They don't need all the bells and whistles out the gate. They just need to have an immersive character in an active world. With seasons, and animals you are already getting x3 what you did when Sims 4 released. So take a step back and enjoy the journey and quit worrying so much about the destination. A new adventure, with new characters, new scenery, and a new focus sounds good to me. Let's quit trying to make it into sims 4 2.0 and let it be it's own game. Enjoyed the breakdown. sims 4 simply wasn't in my opinion, planned well. project olympus was slated to be a very different game and I think they should have cut their losses, started from scratch. and yeah.. it's not really about bells and whistles but a game that feels engaging, immersive and interesting

I’m very skeptical. I just don’t think we have seen interesting gameplay. Fans are making a lot of assumptions about what this game COULD be, but I’m not convinced that those ideas reflect what the game will be.

They are currently developing core live mode systems.
If you look on their website, you'll see their dev timeline
Fans do project things they want, but the team has listed what they have confirmed, and also addressed things they will not do

thought this was gunna be a great game but its going to be too in depth, too many features. And i thought it only was a few years off. that seems like years ago now and its probly still several years away.

I think in many areas they are being fairly realistic- I discuss this in my newest video. Keep in mind they are merely brainstorming. They have said no to some things, but only confirmed a handful. They began most production in 2019 and started with one person. A AAA game takes an average of 5 years to make with a full huge team from the beginning

@@SimmerErin yeh. They are great developers and the game looks brilliant. Just feels like theres a void at the moment and business wise makes sense to get a base game out and add functionality over time. Its probly not that simple i guess.

I don't want open worlds. I feel like it would lead to lag in the long run as they continue to add more features and other worlds. The team is already juggling a lot so I'd prefer them to focus on in-depth gameplay rather than this feature. Plus it wouldn't be the first time a game offered open worlds and had nothing to do in them. Semi-open neighborhoods though would seem to be the best option

Give them a chance. We can't judge other games by a badly implemented game like The Sims 4. Many, many, many other games have open worlds successfully. The Sims 4 is just rather...special... ridiculously backwards in this area.

    • @SimmerErin
      @SimmerErin  Před rokem

It's a fair concern. The only thing I can say is the graphics aren't very demanding- much less so than almost all AAA games. A lot also comes down to coding & optimization.

A little info about game development: many AAA games take up 5 years- and sometimes as long as 8 to make. (it can be fewer) .
      gamemaker.io/en/blog/how-long-to-make-a-game
this is with a team of well over a hundred people, continual FT development and tons of resources.
Paralives, in contrast, has a team of under 10- and they haven't had a full team until about halfway through 2021

@@SimmerErin Well, Basegame implies that it will be as empty as Sims 4 without DLC is. It is misleading.
