  • This extravagant design hearkens back to the classics with the headlamp design...remember when headlights were in pods in the 30's...well here they are again! In addition, those tailamps are just as spectacular. The interior is exceptionally plush, and that steering wheel is a conversation piece. You can see the "art" in automobile design here!

    Hey, Jason! It really is a work of art! The color is called Malibu Tan...but color names may be more for effect than actually describe the color! Peach sounds good too! Thanks! :) Jack

    ABSOLUTLY ASTONISHING! Perfect in every way for sure. When you presented the '60 Chrysler and I commented if you got this one I swear the color looked more Tan in the distance. I was shocked when I saw this video thumbnail I didn't think it was the same car at all just from the color. Weird, but this car is truly awesome. Big fan if these style wheel caps. '62 Plymouth , '81 Ford CROWN VICTORIA, etc. ;)))

      Hey, Rocco! I love that movie...all the best comedians of the time, all the best cars too. It was a great movie! Thanks...I'm going to replay it this week! :D Jack

    Very ornate. In 61 Imperical didn't get the attention that Cadillac and Lincoln did, but I bet it gets a lot of admiring looks now.

    Hey, Kiel! LOL! Color naming is indeed a strange occupation! Chrysler used these strange wheels in several of the their high end cars. F1 racing cars in the 90's used flat bottom steering wheels. Thanks! :) Jack

    Hey Jack! It's been quite a while since I commented on your videos of the classic cars. I changed my CZcams handle to (hopefully) protect my identity. That Imperial is very impressive looking and so attractive, inside and out. Back in those days, Imperials had every feature imaginable, and they were loaded to the gills, just like the Cadillacs and Lincolns. But you hardly see an old Imperial nowadays, because, like many others stated, so many of them wound up in demolition derbies. They are no longer allowed to participate in them, which greatly helps to preserve the ones that are left. One point: Imperials were still body on frame cars until 1966; all other Chrysler products had gone over to unitized body construction starting in 1960. And Imperials are harder to restore today, because they have a lot of parts that differed from those used in other models. Can you imagine how much a set of Imperial wheel covers run today? All in all, very nice Imperial.

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  Před 5 lety

      I'm glad you are commenting again! I think Imperials gave buyers a unique style to choose from...who else treated their headlamps and tailights the way Imperial did! And as you say, they offered every possible feature so those with a lot of money to spend need not feel compromised! Great point about body and frame construction. I can't imagine the difficulty finding parts for restoration. The real hope is to find one that's been restored years ago, or one that has been sitting in a garage unused for years, but still a complete car. Thanks! :) Jack

    Lovely car, and oh so comfortable for sure.
    That "tan" sure looks on the pink side - time for the car to take a sun bath, i guess :)

    @coolrides  Před 11 lety

    Yes indeed..there is a definite similarity there in wheel covers! Big heavy cars had the advantage, along with stationwagons in those demolition derbies, and it sure is a shame that so many nice cars ended up there. Yeah, they said "tan"...subject to interpretation! LOL! Thanks! :) Jack

    Those gorgeous wheel covers sort of remind me of Cadillac's sombrero wheel covers of the late forties. I believe a lot of these big Imperials were destroyed in demotion derbies, so it sure is great to see one this perfect survived. Did you say 'tan'? I'm definitely not going to the beach in Malibu, I'd hate to get a tan. :)

    of the three years of the free standing headlamps, I'd have to pick 62 or 63 as my favorite. The rear deck was toned down and more cohesive. Still, this is a very nice example. The color reminds me a little of the coral color they used on the '58 Cadillacs, almost pink, but not quite.

      There's no question that this car was pretty radical at the time, and it's interesting that Detroit tended to tone down the styling the following years. I think Detroit at the time tended to assume that customers were ready for more radical ideas than they actually were. Thanks! :) Jack

    This shade (Malibu Tan) is often also referred to by another Imperial owner as "Barbie Skin Pink." Whatever you call it, is a surprisingly nice car on these.

    That's so true...it seems that after the grim reality of the depression and the deprivation and horrors of war, America was ready to celebrate new prosperity. What could be a better symbol of that than the choice of a motor vehicle! Next to the family home it was the most visible sign of prosperity! And arguably necessary because of the relative lack of mass transit and the spread of suburbia. Thanks! :) Jack

    A beautiful classic' but it does have the classic 30's touch with the headlamps and taillamps. The dast and steering wheel are fantastic too very luxurious something you don't see in todays cars. It looks pink to me too.

  • @coolrides
    @coolrides  Před 11 lety

    Hey, Gene! I think there's some color shifting in these cars, depending on light conditions. It really makes you wonder what the color actually is! The color itself is fairly ambiguous...hence the fancy name! I suspect that car companies were getting weary of different shades of the usual colors..so colors like this emerged! The wheel caps sure make a statement...some real design went into them! Thanks! :) Jack

    My family had a 1961 Plymouth Fury 4 door Hardtop . Chrysler Corporation cars were the Ugliest things on the road . Today their gaudy Classics . 1962 was also a bad year for their strange designs .

    • @coolrides
      @coolrides  Před 5 lety

      Hey, Timothy! It really is ironic! Cars that were thought to be horrible examples of style become iconic, if nothing more than an example of how far things got out of whack! Thanks! :) Jack
