Elvis, and this song, remind me of my grandma. She loved Elvis so much, she would even celebrate his birthday every year with a dinner and cake. She passed away in December and during her last moments, this is one of the songs my family and I played for her. So glad I have Elvis's music to help make me feel closer to my grandma 💗
For me this song is like the only real window into who my grandmother was when she was young. She grew up very sheltered, had bad experiences with love and marriage and rarely lets anyone in on anything besides her faith but whenever Elvis comes up it’s like she’s back to being a young girl again and the stories about what she used to do for fun or little ways she would rebel against her parents will come out. I remember first hearing this song on her old wood paneled console radio/turntable. Probably the first Elvis song I’d ever heard and the first song on a vinyl record I’d ever heard. I love that the production of the song itself is crackly like a record. Those first notes bring me right back to being about 10 years old at my grandma’s place.
Reminds me of his movie of the same title way way back in the city of Pines. He starred thereinwith Richard Egan who played the role of a confederate soldier. And yes! Debra Paget was his love interest then.
