  • This GCSE science physics video tutorial provides a basic introduction into transverse and longitudinal waves. It discusses the difference between the crest and trough of a wave as well as other features such as frequency, period, wavelength, and wave speed. Examples of transverse waves include electromagnetic waves, water waves, and waves on a string. A sound wave is an example of a longitudinal wave.

and mass 80 gram. The string is being stretched by a force of 1000 N.
    a. Calculate the speed of this wave.
    b. Write down a wave equation for this wave, assuming that it travels in the positive X-direction.
    c. The wave is reflected at the other end of the string and a standing wave builds up. What
condition(s) must be fulfilled for such a standing wave to exist? Show that these conditions
have been fulfilled in the present case.
    d. Which harmonic is this standing wave?
