  • (Season 1 Finale)
    After the catastrophic failure that was Apollo 24's TLI burn, which killed astronaut Harrison Liu, ground control at JSC directs then Jamestown Base commander Ed Baldwin to rendezvous with the fuel-ridden Apollo 24 command module (Osprey) with the LSAM to refuel. Unbeknownst to them in the moment, however, Osprey is left in a tumble which eliminates any possibility of docking. 24's Commander Ellen Waverly decides on an bold plan.

      Lack of political will... We could've had what is in this show any time really: there is no need for big rocket to do Moon landing... or even have Moon base. 2 Delta 4 plus 2 Atlas 5 can bring enough hardware to do Apollo-style landing. Or 4 Space Shuttle launches. Or 2 FH and 2 F9 launches. What's happening in human space exploration for the last ~25 years is a disgrace. If NASA was Russian space agency I would say what happening is just theft of taxpayers money. Several dozens of billions of $ have been spent... for nothing. NOTE that this is not counting ISS - just the money spent on Orion and endless developing of already obsolete launch vehicle.

      Quindar tones - basically communication worked over dedicated phone lines between the tracking stations and mission control. Quindar comes from the company that produced the system. They were used as a way to only need one phone line but do voice and control on a single line (versus separate lines for control and voice). The intro tone signals to unmute the audio, then an outro tone signals to mute the audio. IIRC, the system was also used in Shuttle though I'm not sure the introduction of the TDRS tracking stations changed the system at all.

    It does bother me that they couldn't correct the roll to make Ed's throw easier. I know they burned all the propellant in the SPS and RCS on the service module, but the command module has it's own RCS system for use in re-entry fine alignment. It's normally disabled while the SM is connected, but there's no reason you can't use it here. It wouldn't be super efficient, since it isn't designed for use with the altered center of gravity and additional mass of the connected SM, but if the alternative is drifting off uncontrollably into space...

      @@hermanrobak1285 I mean the timing is the only thing there. Force IS the timing, what time it gets there just depends on the force you apply to it. And angle also is pretty simply, there's not an arc, it's gonna go in a straight line from where you push it. And given he MISSED, he didn't actually get the angle completely right. So really he just got the timing right, and yeah it's a longshot, but not like something implausible. He's operated in space with effectively no gravity and transported large equipment in low gravity before so he has some idea of how objects move in that environment, and he has been watching the capsule spin at the same rate the entire time so he's more than familiar with the how long each rotation is. Again, not good odds at all, but it's not like unfathomable to get the timing right given his experience.

    Enjoying the show. I realise dramatic storytelling is point here but problem of realism here for me is ...the lunar module vehicle is not out of fuel so could have coupled ...or pressed up against...CM and burn to trim CM orbit or, at very least, maneouvred itself much closer so didnt have to throw from a mile away.

  • @AsbestosMuffins

    if they really needed to they could fly the LEM to within inches of the CSM as the two in real life did when docking and there were provisions for docking with an unresponsive csm

    • @Bearmauls
      @Bearmauls Před rokem +1

      I think the issue here is that the CSM wasn't properly in lunar orbit and the LSM was at the edge of it's fuel envelope, accounting for needing sufficient fuel to land again safely and enough to transfer to the CSM so they could correct their orbit after the fact, so this was the closest approach they could make, given the situation. I know that's not a perfect explanation, but that's what the series explained.

How that technology to use an accurate analogy is like a better and better version of an old wooden sailing ship. 1957 Sputnik was launched, 65 years later we still haven't landed a human on Mars nor built a moon station. It's likely that our space program will turn 75 before we reach Mars or have functioning lunar colony. I will be long gone from this earth and with me the rest of humanity. Some of our satellites will be up there for centuries as a testament. That we flew to high for our wings to survive.
