Mangalorean Chicken Jeere Meeri Curry / Chicken Cumin Pepper Curry (Mangalorean)| You and I Can Cook

  • Chicken Jeere Meeri Curry is a traditional mangalorean dish with Cumin and pepper as the main star ingredients in the dish. This is spicy, very aromatic and a very delicious curry. Adding coconut to the dish is purely optional. Potatoes are also an option in this recipe . I haven't added poppy seeds as I couldn't get it. Do watch the video for the complete recipe.
    Ingredients:
    1.2 kg chicken bone-in ( wash the chicken, apply a little salt and turmeric and set aside for 30 mins)
    2 potatoes
    For the masala : You can dry roast the ingredients before grinding or first grind and then fry the masala well.
    Kashmiri chillies - 4 to 5
    Small dry red chillies - 4
    Cumin (jeera) - 1.5 tsp
    Pepper corns - 1/2 tsp
    Corriander - 1.5 tbsp
    mustard - 1/2 tsp
    turmeric pwd - 1/4 tsp
    onions - 4 big chopped
    garlic cloves - 4
    ginger - 1/4 inch
    small ball of tamarind
    fresh coconut - 2 tbsp (optional)
    cinnamon - 1/2 inch
    cloves 5
    grind everything to a thick smooth paste adding very little water
    Method
    add 1 tbsp oil to a cooking utensil
    add 1 sliced onion and fry till golden brown ( take a little fried onion and keep aside for garnish)
    add the ground masala and keep frying till it turns a little darker, aromatic and the oil separates
    add the water from the blender and adjust the gravy
    add a little salt
    turn off the flame when the gravy boils
    take a wok and add a little oil
    cook the marinated chicken in its own juices for 15 mins till all the juices are absorbed
    add the chicken to the gravy
    add 2 potatoes cut
    add a little water to adjust the gravy and cook for 10 mins
    adjust the salt
    add a little vinegar or lime juice if required.
    simmer for 2 mins and turn off the gas.
    plate the dish and garnish with a few brown onions
