I've walked past these boats so many times and seen Alfred there and always smiled as he has the same name as my dog, never knew until now that he was yours! Hope he finds a good owner!

How is he? The world's cruel to old ships and boats that are built out of salvageable metal; is he still okay?
Haha, I walked past it like a million times smiling cause my name is also Alfred. Had NO friggin idea Simone lived there

that "if you love a man, sometimes you have to find him a new owner" is a funny-sad line not only by the context but also the fact I'll never forget her voice while saying it
Omg Your boat is the Pride boat! He's my favorite boat in the harbor!!
Your boat is actually in incredible condition for being as old as it is. I've repaired tugboats built in the 60s and 80s that were in insanely bad states of disrepair and still being used. Yours looks like it still has a mostly undamaged hull (minus a little rust here and there, honestly I've seen so much worse pass inspection.) the engines are clean, the interior is all rebuilt, and I love how you turned the wheel house into a part of your living space. My only concern would be corrosion in the pipes but all that was probably inspected and repaired when they replaced the check valve for the sewage tank. (We always inspected similar systems when doing repairs on things, so if we had to replace one overboard check valve we would open all of them up for inspection and check the pipes they were connected to.)
TIL: In Sweden it's cheaper to buy and completely remodel a houseboat then it is to buy an apartment.
Yea, but I can only imagine how much money was put into fixing that boat up. Between dry dock fees, material costs, labor costs and running costs it couldn't have been very cheap. I was merely commenting on up front vs long term costs.
Britain too, unless you want to live somewhere like Brierfield.
Did you see the price of this vessel? I can hardly imagine it costs that much for a basic apartment!
Sweden's had the same credit-funded houseprice boom that the rest of the West has, a couple of years ago the gov started to crack down on that by limiting the maximum mortgage term to 105 years... www.telegraph.co.uk/personal-banking/mortgages/sweden-cuts-maximum-mortgage-term-to-105-years-the-average-is-14/

@@vnyggi621 yeah but she was far from broke if she could afford all that!
Steeven Gaulin Depends how much work you do yourself. Plus real estate is super expensive in Sweden.
@John yeah, it's not as expensive where I live, but I've found these kinds of boats for as low and 25000⏠which is nothing compared to apartments of the same size
When they heard the English with your strangely-American accent, they probably thought you had a gun. :p
đđđ the most American thing ever
Swedish people love gun collecting too you know. And hunting.
@@doncarloquita4759
Are you allowed to carry a handgun during everyday activities in sweden?
@@merlinious01 I remember it being allowed only if there is immediate and proven life threat. Although I also remember self defense with firearms is generally prohibited. I don't think a Swede would have thought of gun ownership on the boat since Swedish law protects their citizens from gun use. In other words, jail time for the gun user. They probably just got rattled by the expletives because there are other ways the yeller could give them consequences for trespassing. Especially since they are on someone's boat.

It's a boat. It is a robot.
austen bin Needs an autopilot I suppose. You should totally make a blow up autopilot like the one from the classic move Airplane, except actually able to drive the boat.
Probably one that steers you a̶w̶a̶y̶ ̶f̶r̶o̶m̶ into icebergs while playing "My Heart Will Go On."

Yeah, well. Imagine a man saying that about a woman. There would be hell to pay. Every feminist on earth would gangbang your twitter account.
An ICEBREAKING TUGBOAT!??!? I didn't even know that was a thing! Your boat/house was way cooler than you even let on! And he was made in 1942?! And sunk in the '50s?! Who raised him afterward? The then-owner?

Somewhat botched translation of the blocket ad:
M/S Alfred is an 19.5 meter long and 4.8 meter wide towboat/icebreaker refurnished as a houseboat. Fully driveable with 430 hp. Heatpump and stove for heating. Currently has a berth at Söder MÀlarstrands kaj for houseboats and is sold with a berth at Stockholms Hamnar. The buyer will be approved after a year of testing.
Wheelhouse, kitchen and bathroom on the upper deck. Living room with connected bedroom on lower deck. Washing machine, dishwasher, water toilet and shower. Is currently connected to communal water and sewers.
(I'd like to think my English is pretty good, but my boat terminology is lacking.)
Aaaalso, I didn't even realise you were Swedish! I'm happy to find more English speaking Swedes on CZcams.
I'm sorta confused about that part too... I'm assuming the space that comes with the boat is your for at least a year, and if the owners of the dock don't want to rent that space out to you anymore, you need to find somewhere else.
Don't speak a word of Swedish (okay, maybe one or two), but just looking at that name, "Söder MÀlarstrands kaj", I'm pretty sure kaj means "quay" in English, pronounced like "key"
Ever TM It's a place, so I didn't translate it.
Also, maybe the boat is sold at a discount, and the "year of testing" means that the buyer gives Simone the right to use them as a guinea pig for robot testing and development for one year. Probably sick of getting her own hair stuck in machines.
The year of testing is about ownership of the slip. The owners of the dock put you on probation for a year. So if you are a loud partier and jerk they can kick you out.
"Don't forget to like, comment, subscribe, and buy my boat..."
I think having *retired* houseboat captain on your resume is probably just as cool as current houseboat captain.
My gosh this is adorable. Great reno and video work !! Good on you for going that route of a diy lifestyle and now for moving on to the West, what a journey !
Does anyone else want a budgeting video? I would love to know the journey to buying a boat and living in it, how it affordable it really was, what the alternatives were, how difficult the process turned out to be.
I love the accidental planter on the side with plants growing out of it XD
I love the history and character, hope someone great is taking care of Alfred now
you should just sail it to america!
On a houseboat around Cape Horn.... I would watch the shit out of that!
There is an epic Tested documentary in this. I mean, it's an ocean going ice breaker tug boat, you could _totally_ make an epic voyage to the US in her with a bit of up front work to make her fully seaworthy! And what you save in rent in California when you get there will probably make it worth it!!
Call me a killjoy but that is really dangerous and I'm not sure that is even legal
Why wouldn't it be legal? Ocean going tugs go to the worst places on earth and come back towing broken down vessels... granted it's not entirely safe but that's why you carry a good life raft :-)
*Some ships transport smaller boats over long distances.*
You already lowkey reminded me of BDG and âplease buy my bed/boatâ helped
LOL after I watched this, CZcams felt I'd be interested in a 75 meter, 20 million dollar luxury super-yacht. WTF, CZcams algorithms, don't you have enough of my personal data yet to know I can't afford a second super-yacht ? đ€Łđ€Łđ€Ł

The last time I bought a desklamp from Amazon, the algorithm assumed I suddenly wanted to fill my entire house with desklamps.

The more I learn about Simone Giertz, the more I'm amazed about her adventures through life.
The most amazing part to me is that Alfred is celebrating his 75th birthday. It's crazy that such an old boat is still floating, let alone fit to live in
I just watched this twice. There is such beauty in how you share this decision and tell your story. For sure you have looked into all your options and this makes sense. Good luck with all adventures and I hope you still live near the water.
Just found this and the scene where you are hyper-gagging is extremely accurate. In my youth I worked as a ship builder. It was how I supported myself and my family. I loved every minute of it. I lived on the Oregon coast and worked year round in the shipyard. Rain is not your friend when dealing with electricity and getting shocked was NO picnic. But the absolute worse was when, early on, I and 3 others had to clean the bilge on a 75 yr old fishing boat. It had not been touched since it had been launched. The smell was nearly overpowering. Even with masks and respirators, it was a living nightmare. We had a 40 foot zone around the vessel that was fenced off so none of the other workers would be affected by the smell. I wound up buying many, many sets of coveralls to wear while we used shovels, our hands and finally a hose and wet/dry vacuums to get to the bare metal at the keel so as to replace about 23, I think, feet of the hull, ribs and the longs. My wife had to buy a used washing machine to keep on the back porch just to wash my work clothes. She really loved me...
@@topherthe11th23 At ease in The Shire...No trouble...I wish I could say it ended well, but no, it didn't...She fell in love with crystal meth and neither I nor our 2 children could halt her fall...She eventually left me and our kids to go be with her dealer...Sad...Heartbreaking actually, but the children and I got better and moved on...She went to jail for 13 months and got herself clean, married a very nice man and they opened a business...We can't talk to this day...She told me once that she can't face up to what we lost...I didn't know how to hold her tight enough and keep her safe...But I have a new life and our kids love my new wife of nearly 26 yrs...I have 5 kids and 12 grandkids BTW with the youngest being 3...Life is good...

Sad to see the boat go, oh well well get over it. Awesome to see you on television in my country (looked kinda akward though everyone talking dutch and you just standing there)
What is it about all the Swedish youtubers I watch leaving or having left Sweden? You, Wintergatan, Switch and Lever, Darbin Orvar
Matthias Wandel Perhaps because many people, especially the young and well educated are living in other countries today at least for periods of time? The idea of the European Union is to allow people chose their place of living and working etc without regard to country borders. Perhaps you are seeing just the effect of this?
Because Swedish people often live abroad for periods, to get experience working with other cultures and learn about the world and thus themselves.
I'm more curious why people in other countries do not do this.
Jesper Anderson Some countries do not allow their citizens to leave. Other countries do not offer the necessary education and income to citizens to go easily abroad. Or they go abroad but are seen there as refugees or migrants. On the other hand, I have seen young people from almost everywhere spending time in foreign countries for self-experience. Sometimes of course only single people from very privileged families are able to do this. In order to discuss the topic further we would need more data about percentage of population spending time abroad for educative reasons.
Curtis Rather they are annoyed about ill-informed people from the US claiming nonsense about Sweden.
Immigrant invasion, that's why

Simone, you are absolutely hilarious! Love your humour and candour!
Nooooooooooooo the amazing houseboat!!!
Holy hell 165,000 US dollars for that boat? Boy am I out of touch with the hooptie house boat market.
poopsmcgee2k6 Included is a docking site in the center of Stockholm. That alone it probably worth around half of the total price.
House prices in Scandinavia are absolutely cray, you can't buy shit with that money now
When a good one room apartment is 600,000, 165 000 doesn't sound so bad, does it. Right now, the prices in Stockholm are so crazy that you could rent a hotel room for the same price you would pay a day for owning an apartment -_-
Well only in the south / Big cities.
If you go more to the north or away from the largest cities the prices are much lower.
I guess it wouldn't if it was actually a good apartment.
