Carpenters at the BBC - 1971

- The Carpenters' debut BBC concert, recorded on their first British tour in September 1971. They perform hits including Close to You, Superstar and We've Only Just Begun, together with the odd Beatles' tune and a Bacharach/David medley. Karen's drumming and Richard's keyboards get instrumental support from their five-piece touring band and a 26-piece orchestra conducted by Johnny Pearson.
Also included (which are usually edited out) is the original opening and the song "I Fell In Love With You" which Karen duets with Doug Strawn. - Zábava
No one nowadays can perform live and sound THIS good. Sad
It’s now 2023 and I can’t believe The Carpenters are not in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame??? Please let’s get them in! Who is with me on this one?

I totally agree!!
I agree
Eu estou.
I am a singer. And many times I research singers from the past. And when I heard Karen Carpenter, I fell in love with it, my heart raced. And knowing that she is no longer here is a lot of pain. 😢
The world lost a beautiful legend the day Karen Carpenter died.
Her pitch, her timing, her emotive expression, and the love of the music. She was a gift from creator. Blessed to have her on the planet for a short time. Best female voice ever. Devastated when we lost her. ❤️🔥🫶🏼🙏
God wanted her so bad at his table that he gave her cancer
I grew up in Downey and Karen and Richard would drive by the house often and Karen would always smile a huge smile and wave at us on our bicycles.
Richard always drove and Karen would have her feet up on the dash of The Carpenter's Van....that was on Cedartree Rd in Downey Northside....1969-1982....
The best ol days.....miss you Karen ...♥️
YES! Miss Karen greatly!!!
Karen Carpenters at the age of 21 years old has amazing voice of the century, she's been imitated around the world but never duplicated.
Think they varied more than just rock'n'roll. Not sure what you mean by genuine though. Aren't other artists in the hall of fame genuine?
Nobody in 2024 sounds this good live. I'm speechless.
Soo right❤
There’s nobody even close!
sorry to burst your bubble, but this not a "live" performance. This was lip-synced with their studio recordings. But they are fabulous, and Karen was an exceptional drummer.
@@blitzebill Did they lip sync the mistakes, too?
@@geoffallan3804 yes they did. You can see Richard at the keyboard, just barely sitting down in time, and the song starts, and his fingers are half to a whole second behind the recording. he manages to catch up.
Carpenters never chased the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Frankly, they were too genuine to be there. They have the legacy of their music.
I believe that somewhere in the world, there are people who feel the same emotions that I feel when I listen to masterpieces like this song.
Tears. Reminds me of my dad . Such nostalgia.
1970 Baby here. As far back as I can remember her voice rings through the years. There is no equal. None can touch her. I was devastated when we lost her.
Unbelievable talent. I've just been watching young Dionne Warwick sing and the purity of voice in both of them is astonishing.
Karen was walking out of a restaurant in LA, John Lennon was walking in. John stopped and just said to Karen: “I want to tell you love, I think you’ve got a fabulous voice”, and he just walked on.
I’ve read that Paul McCartney thought she had the best female voice ever.

Wow...I am a singer and an alto....like Karen....When I audition..I sing some of her songs...there are too many soprano singers who are really altos...I loved her tones and smooth perfection....such an angel!!!😀🎶🎶
@@sweett3469 That's what changed Richard's opinion of her singing. She wasn't slated at first to sing his songs but he liked her smooth alto range on one of their first songs and he changed his mind.
Perfection
52 years ago...still can bring tears, or smiles...damn, she is so missed!
So much missed ❤
Lets get them into hall of fame while Richard is still here to experience and accept the honor the carpenters deserve
The Hall of Fame doesn’t deserve them.
God would have her near Him ❤
@@gregbutcher7081 Your right, what is so big deal about the Hall of Shame...Forget It...
Turned 70 yesterday and I still think out of everyone this voice is the most beautiful. It makes me cry.
Makes two of us. On both accounts
Makes three of us - both accounts (- Feb '54). Voice of an angel.
Karen Carpenter had the most peaceful voice I have ever heard.
Their commitment to excellence is apparent, hours and hours of practice and the fact that they were both perfectionists. They don't make them like this anymore.
yeah and she died young
but Katy Perry can be pretty
This type of music brings me back to the street I grew up on in the 70s... everyone knew each other, never thinking that I'd end up in 2023 in a shit show of a world we have now...dam I miss my youth 😢
No skimpy outfit. No suggestive dance moves. Yet, I am enthralled by the beauty and talent on display here....
Absolutely !

Thank god for technology. Long after Karen left this world we can still listen to her amazing legacy. Rest in peace beautiful angel.
Her voice was astonishingly beautiful.
In my 65 years, this is the closest I've ever heard to a angel singing. Then & still through 2023 😇

She honestly did not know how special she was. An ANGEL sent straight from heaven.
We love you Karen Anne 💕🌹💕🌹💕🌹💕🌹💕🌹💕🌹
That was beautiful.
I wonder that maybe she DID know. And perhaps the burden was too much for a mortal human to bear…
I believe in all reality it was part both! Karen was a talent unlike any other this world has ever known! RIP!
I don’t know what I like better, her singing or her singing while she play the drums. There will never be another Karen Carpenter
It's 2023 and Karen and Richard Carpenter are more relevant than ever
Karen Carpenter had the most amazingly beautiful voice that I ever heard in my life! I discovered the Carpenter's music back in the early '70s when I was a young teen. I continued to listen to them as a young adult and became a huge fan of their music!
She was an incredible singer and could sing any song! She did it by covering a couple of the Beatles songs, putting her own touch on them, as well as covering other tunes too! Karen Carpenter is truly the most talented female singer of all time! Her voice still shines today and sounds as timeless as it did In the 1970s and early '80s!! It would be incredible if they were admitted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame and her brother Richard could accept that honor!!
No one in recorded history has ever held a candle to Karen. God bless you sweetheart.
I am 55...I am fortunate enough to have Carpenter's music as one of my earliest memories...I started a Carpenter's fan club in my college in the early 80's..
Truly
I would have to give Celine Dionne the nod
I am a millenial living in Asia and when I think of America, Karen's velvety crystal clear voice always comes to my mind.
I could listen to the Carpenters all day.
I love hard rock and classic rock (Beatles, Stones, ZZTop -70s, etc...)
What a voice! If I ran a music company and she came in before she was famous, I'd tell her: "Wait here a minute".
I'd go in the other room and phone my partner on another floor of the building: "Drop what you doing, I've got a generational star here. Get down here now and hurry! Bring a contract, a secretary and a lawyer right now! Also, bring some champagne for after she signs..."
She was a criminally underrated drummer. Such a beautiful soul.
I was shocked, I’ve drummed sessions- she’s a boss. Wow.
Thank God in Jesus Christ for internet so we all time can listen to these wonderful musicians and singers...oh oh..❤❤❤❤❤
Not in the Hall of Fame?....NO WAY!!!....Karen's voice was of an angel an Richard was a.musical genius....let's vote them in guys...
The BEST female singer of all-time in my opinion PLUS a master drummer on top of it! Such a talent! (Along with her brother, Richard!)
Richard was a virtuoso pianist, and a genius with musical arrangements. They both were just truly gifted.
This WV boy fell in love with Karen Carpenter in circa 1971 after watching them on Carol Burnett. Their music still takes me to my happy place.
Im all for the Carpenters being in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame. Great drummer - God bless Karen Carpenter👍❤️
Takes guts to do a Beatles song for BBC in '71..... Karen id forever loved by generations far after she left us 💖
she is missed without her there would be no Carpenters she was the show I am 70 years old and grew up with her music we miss you R.I.P
The Carpenters Definitely Belong in the Rock And Roll Hall Of Fame!!
Of course Karen has an angelic voice that practically has no equal in musical history, but let's also not forget about the outstanding quality of the songs that the Carpenters made. Those compositions are of the topmost level.
August 2023 watching and loving Karen ❤ she sounded incredible live, faultless
I’m a singing drummer. What Karen is doing is extremely tricky. The trick is to concentrate on singing and let the drumming just happen. She’s the best I’ve ever seen at it.
I can sing playing guitar but I cannot playing the piano it’s so hard for me (not that I’m that good or anything mind you ) but I cannot imagine playing drums and singing. NO FN WAY, so cool you can do it …. She was amazing. Her live and recorded voice is almost the same too.
She considered herself a drummer (percussionist) first, and a singer second. From what I've read, she really disliked stepping out from behind the drums in the mid-70's. She loved drumming. Such a wonderful talent.
She makes it so simple...but it isn't. A great artist.
Did they really sing live in this show? I just watched the 1974 Japan concert which was definitely live. Here I am not THAT sure though.
@@floramiles1365 From watching this only the Bacharach / David medley sounded like it came off the album, the rest were either sang live or as live as they could, a couple of songs in the set are not even on main albums, if at all.
I' don't have the words. Almost like a religious experience. God...how amazing she is. "Is" not was. She is ever present in our minds. She was the sound track of our lives. As I listened to Led Zeppelin and Black Sabbath with my friends, when I was alone I listened to Karen and loved every second. I wonder how some guy couldn't wrap himself around her and pull her out of the stupid thing that pulled her down.
She still IS..through Internet...
Now she sings in Heaven. ❤ Amen
You can say whatever you wish about the music, but Karen Carpenter's vocals are out of this world. This performance is spectacular!!!! Gone way too young...
its sad how she died but JESUS SAVES
She Not only sounded fabulous and totally into tune and on time here but she looked fabulous. This was at the height of the Carpenters
They loved The Beatles and did several tributes of their songs.
Thank you to all of The Carpenters for your impeccable classic 70's songs.
These are songs we will forever cherish.
I'm glad that Karen Carpenter and Nat King Cole weren't born until the time that recording technology was developed. Those two incredible voices need to be preserved as long as our species exists.
I bet Karen had no second takes. She's the eternal goddess of my musical soul.
When I hear her sing “Superstar” with no electronics, no autotune, just the purest sound ever. I actually tear up at thought of her passing so young. God Bless you Karen and Richard!
As a young black youth bus to a white school in the early 70s i was put in the chorus class.. Years later im so happy to have fell in love with these songs in my teens and still today people are amazed when i say the Carpenters is in my top three all time.
By far the best female singer of all time!

A gift from God. As I have gotten older I have learned to appreciate the amazing qualities of her voice and the music. Having been born in 1963, this and so many other 70's songs are the background music of my life. I feel very fortunate to have lived during a time of incredible creativity and diversity in music. All the way up through the 90's and then it fell off a cliff.
born in 1965 and I completely agree with you. I quit listening to any new American or English language music right about 1990. But MAN! Didn't we have great music in Junior High School and High School too!? Kids today will never get it. My son and daughter in law were playing this "rap" crap in the car and I asked them if we could please just put some music on...they were "highly" offended. I'm sure you hear what I'm saying, brother!
The seventies gave us some wonderful music. The Carpenters, James Taylor, Carol King, Neil Young, Joni Mitchell ect. I think the eighties kind of sucked with a few exceptions, I think of the eighties as mainly one hit wonders and hair metal. The nineties gave us some incredible rock bands and then as you say, it went off a cliff.
My mother used to say " there are only two singers in the world, one is Karen Carpenter and the other isn't".
Même plaisir , même état d esprit , même année , c'est une bonne étoile 🌟 , heureuse d être avec des personnes qui ont du goût sonore. Douces nuits à tout ceux qui nous ont laissé que du meilleur son. Merci

No singing voice of the last 100 years has conveyed loneliness, loss, and depression in so heartbreakingly beautifully a fashion.
elliott smith and nick drake. IMO
Yes, but that is why Top of the World is one of their most popular songs, their best feel good song.
you have to deal with depression to be compelled to their music and the sad songs as much as i am. there is a lonliness to it, especially goodbye to love, but the song is so well written that it almost seems happy. in my life i feel what she went through because of mental illness. i dont wish it on anyone. but i will always love and miss karen.
I heard a music critic say that he thinks that one of the possible reasons why so many people have such a visceral response to Karen's singing is that it sounds like a mother singing to her child, it's an interesting theory, who knows? I guess the sad irony of that is that she never had any of her own children to sing to.
No auto tune needed ever here- one of the best female vocalists of all time
The BEST !!!! .....Trust ! 👍👍👍👍👍
The Carpenters, and probably most vocalists of that time would never need or use Autotune...
Today's so-called female top performers must be so embarrassed of themselves when they listen to Karen Carpenter sing.
Around 2020, I drove by their childhood home in New Haven. I miss Karen Carpenter’s voice so much! There’s so many songs she could have recorded.
The entire band is excellent. The arrangements are wonderful and Karen's tone and timbre are hard to match. She should have been singing in the big band era. Anyway she is a goddess and we were fortunate to have her.
She worked so hard and never got to relish in her fame. I hope she knows how much we love her.
52 years later and still wow oh wow! Absolute musical perfection.
Best female singer of all time in my opinion
I'm just sitting here shaking my head in amazement. Karen is still sorely missed 40 years later, that is evident in the comments, and I do want to say the whole group sounds flawless. What incredible talent, and especially given how young they were at the time of this concert! I thoroughly enjoyed watching this!
Her voice is like medicine that you can only get from angels.

That voice deserves a spot in the Rock and Roll hall of fame.

Love seeing Karen with a big smile while on the drums. Even after the melancholy big hits, she always say "Thank you" and flashed a big smile. Glad she had some joy and fun :)
What's truly extraordinary is how young they were here. Karen was 21 and Richard was 24. Think about that.
She was only 32 when she died! So sad.

What 21??? Surprised
Really mature artists

I was 6 years old in 1971 living in Puerto Rico. Did not understand one word of english....and all I wanted was to hear their music and Karen's silky voice. Fast forward.....now living in Long Beach Ca..not far from their home town of Downey....and I still have that same admiration for Richard and Karen. man, I can't get around that voice of hers. it's almost surreal. dark and light at the same time, and the control she has over it is unreal. what a beautiful woman. always thought the carpenters were just some square act. now I'm mesmerized. funny.
And she is only 21 here, Bob. Absolute phenom.
me too! As a musician myself I only listened to music I could perform. Never took the time to listen to women sing. I'm glad I finally discovered how awesome she was. The best voice I ever heard.
+Walt Scotten She sang in her speaking range, seemingly effortless. Both she and Richard were absolute perfectionists . Literal dynamic duo.

“Superstar”=perfection. Karen had the clearest, most pitch-perfect voice and the best phrasing of any singer that I’ve ever heard. ❤️
Joni Mitchell and Linda Ronstadt say hi 👋.
Karen was phenomenal, but there were certainly other singers on her level.
Agree 1000%
This woman had the voice of an angel. Her pitch and tone are absolute perfection. It breaks my heart to know she had such low self-esteem, which ultimately led to her undoing. God Bless you Karen. Now God can listen to your beautiful voice echoing throughout His heavenly kingdom.
Superstar, still inducing chills in me 50 years later.

Isn't it funny that Leon Russell wrote that song? It's horrible when he sang it. But it's an awesome song when Karen sings anything.
This year completed 40 years since the world lost the greatest singer with a voice and the most refined and tuned timbre that I've known on planet earth, I haven't seen a tribute to this singer Who, in addition to singing, was a person of integrity, true and delighted with her simple way of living
Karen’s voice was that of a seraph-perfect, flawless, superb, exquisite and certainly not earned by humanity.
When she first came on to the scene I was in high school. I thought her voice was good but it wasn't until decades later that I realized how good it was. I will say it again; Karen's voice gave a song its fullest expression.
Not only was Karen gorgeous, talented on the drums, and had the greatest voice in rock in the 70s- but her brother Richard was equally talented, singer, keyboardist, and arranger!
Karen also had RANGE, without "lumps and dips" From Low Alto to well up into soprano country, she was SMOOTH. And then there was the dynamic and tonal control
Being a drummer also gave her a brilliant sense of timing, knowing when to "lead" or "lag" a beat. And with a brother / accompanist like Richard, things were destined to be very polished, but NOT "audio wallpaper".
I continue to cry for Karen!! She was so wonderful! Take care Richard!
Two people with extraordinary talent created something that I don’t think will ever be equalled. Perhaps under-appreciated at the time, their music endures and is finally given the recognition it truly deserves.
Agree friend peace if anyone remembers it ha not i t
Impossible not to get emotional. The Carpenters at their best. Karen Carpenter, no one will ever take your place. Your voice moves me to this day. When I listen (And When He Smiles / For All We Know) it becomes impossible not to cry with her eternal sweet voice. I always pray to God for you. Love you forever.
I believe Karen's voice has a healing quality to it. anyone else ever think that ?
YES.
Oui
that is completely true
To everyone but herself unfortunately
She was continually healing herself inside and we saw this come out of her in performances. She just went as far as she could go....it is just sad and I'm sure if she could have had a second chance today she would take it. But we may not know she may be very happy these days.
There isn't anything to analyze or explain; perfection in the arrangements and in the vocals. They had pure talent.

Not at singing he wasn't, but musical arrangement and selecting songs for Karen to sing....Richard was phenomenal.
@@miamitten1123 he sang beautifully and many times on their songs he is singing also

I've never heard a voice come close to her specific quality. She was a one of a kind.

Many tried but for me Shania Twain sounds unintentionally like Karen. The rasps in vocals and the velvety enunciation is also present in Shania's voice.
Possibly because Karen was admittedly Shania's biggest inspiration?

Oh man that track @ 10:09...look at how happy Karen is there.....her happiness made my eyes flood with tears....it's a beautiful song, the first time I've ever heard it, but Karen Carpenter looked so happy singing it. I just want to swoop down and pick her up and take her somewhere where no harm will come to her....
I don't know if she belongs in the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame or not, but I know she possessed one of the most beautiful voices to ever sing a note
And to think she started singing almost by accident and really wanted to just play the drums. Her recording voice is one the greatest gifts given to the pop musical world.
Every time I hear Karen Carpenter's voice, I just shake my head. Simply gorgeous. A natural, unforced mezzo, as clear as a bell. There are plenty of hugely successful "singers" who don't even belong in the same room as Karen. Such a shame that she died so young, but so grateful that we have recordings so that we can still enjoy her talents.
This is how I chose to remember Karen Carpenter..seemingly healthy,at the top of her game..singing like an angel..
Karen & Richard Carpenter typify the meaning of "a touch of class". They were the hearts & the souls of 2 exquisite masterpieces.
A voice straight from heaven
I get chills every time I hear them.
she was going to a concert with her friend along with her. Her friend reported that Karen was singing in the back of the car at a very low level and this is the same level she sang. There was some sort of magic between Karen's voice and the microphone.
The voice, the drums,the face.
Watching her play the drums and sing so beautifully at the same time gives me chills. A phenomenal talent gone way too soon.
They should have allowed her to continue to sing while playing the drums. Playing the drums was her passion. She never wanted to be front and center singing without her drums. Look how much happier she was-Even her voice was “happier”! They caused her anorexia and bulemia, which ultimately caused her death.
But she's not even playing in this video, it's obvious
Verdade 😢😢
I truly agree!!
She appears much more comfortable behind the drums as she was obviously very good and from watching their videos.
