One of my favorites, my husband and I have been practicing this song together, he plays banjo while I sing.

Her voice is so deep and rich, we are all made wealthy just by listening to her.

@@CelticSongs Most of my ancestors were either Scottish or Irish/ I took a number of languages in the various colleges I attended but was never good with languages. I always wanted to learn Gaelic so badly. A good friend's mother used to lapse into it when she got mad at him lol. I think it is such a beautiful language. I am a History teacher and study cultures as well as history. I know the myths and legends of the Celts.I also sing and always have , in school, college and church choirs. I love singing the few songs that have translated well into English. But listening to these songs in Gaelic literally touches my soul. I listen to them to relax, to sleep, when working. These ladies in this series are so enchanting it is easy to close my eyes and travel to the lands of my ancestors. Thank them from someone trapped in North Carolina lol.

It amazing how these songs can connect on a deeper level to bring out that bond to the homeland, no matter how many generations ago it was, it's deep within us, ready to be awoken with songs such as these. There is no greater compliment for a song such as this than to say, even for a brief moment that it took you on a journey to the lands of your ancestors. Thank you for taking the time to comment and share your story.

My daughter told me about this beautiful air, I found this lovely version, and here I sit, flute in hand, trying to learn it. As I told her, it will take a while. Thank you

Where can we look for an English translation? I love the depth of soul in the song and would love to know its meaning.

It's a poem about leaving a town. Look up Slán le Máigh or Farewell to the Maigue, by Aindrias Mac Craith.

It's about a guy who was a very bad sort in a mid 18th century village on the Limerick/Cork border, for drinking, chasing women both married and single and is banished forever from the village, he laments about all the sport he's going to miss now it a sad song but the context is actually funny...the fun is over

    Traditional "Irish" song.
The song is in Irish as is the Maigh river.
