Mao is very much the "war hero". The problem is running a country is massively different from running an army. Keeping a tight grip is good only in the army cuz one man can only do so much.
Mao could be a far left anarchist, grass-root populist, anything but a dictator. condemning Mao for centralizing power while commending Deng for decentralization reform is typical neo-liberal propaganda. imo Xi's main attempt was exactly just to eliminate the dangerously excessive tendency towards neo-liberal capitalism and redirect China back to state capitalism.
but dont get me wrong.. i mean, you still have the very good reasons to be afraid of Mao, Deng and Xi, all of them because they are in fact still true dedicated communists, whatever your western neo-liberal propaganda depict them as.

I understand why many would consider Deng's reform as a very neo-liberal leaning policy shift. but the thing is, he knew there was a limit, which finally results in the difference between China and USSR in the 90s (if sharing profits with the oligarchs was Deng's main interest, well he could've done it better then). and I dont see why you also include Xi as a neo-liberal anyways, that's just absurd in any sense.
and make no mistake that I'm nobody to educate anyone here, just an average Chinese university student. I think my opinion (as above) basically comes from Lu Qiyuan (卢麒元) and Wen Tiejun (温铁军), two Chinese scholars who also work with the Chinese government in some ways (so of course you can consider it as government propaganda as well, I mean why not). and I believe you can find their videos just search '国仁全球大学堂' on youtube, well the only problem being if you need English subtitles you probably have to do it yourself.
