Kemper - Profiling My Matchless - Is It As Good As The Real Thing?

  • In today's video, I turn on my Kemper Profiler and profile my favourite amp of all time, the Matchless Independence 35. But is the captured tone on the Kemper as good as the real thing?
    If you would like to download the Matchless Independence Profiles, go to the Kemper rig manager and look for TSR INDEPENDENCE. There are 3 profiles of the 3 channels.
    The Studio Rats are core band members Paul Drew on guitar/production/mixing, drummer James Ivey and Dan Hawkins on bass. They collaborate with singers and musicians to produce radio-ready songs.

      @ Apparently links have disappeared. They were on this video. I've been visiting The Studio Rats web frequently with the hope of finding more Kemper profiles, but no luck. Truly, the two profiles I downloaded here are some of the best I've heard on my Kemper (I have a lot of paid-for profiles from the most Kemper-popular folks).

    I do like the kemper, but there's always this subtle shrill quality in the top end on distorted tones that is not in the real thing. With a (preferably valve) overdrive stomp in front, I'm happy with it, through my Fatso ELX7.

    It's the sound of the amp for sure, but I just feel that there might be just a little bit more string separation on the amp. It might be bias because it wasn't a blind test.

    Top class comparison video. I had to put on some headphones to have a really good listen.
    In the past, when I have watched other comparison videos of profiling amps, the amp always tends to sound a bit brighter with more sparkle than the profiler
    .
    However, this time the profile of the matchless was almost the same to me ears.
    Incredible!!!
    I now need to try a kemper, to see how it feels and responds to one’s playing

      For what it’s worth, the feel is noticeably better than many digital options out there I’ve used, and what’s even better is at any point you can modify the feel using adjustments to the settings.
      It’s not an easy piece of kit to use, but I’m over the moon happy with what it does for me. Very solid piece of kit.

  • @T999BYE

    Not sure if I'm over thinking this...but..You have profiled the Matchless amp using a Telecaster and yes it sounds awesome and indistinguishable from the actual Matchless & Tele combination. However, if I buy a Kemper, PC etc etc and download this patch for myself then put a Les Paul through it, will it be a true representation of a les paul going direct through a Matchless or will it sound like a les paul using the Telecasters sonics of a Matchless captured through a Kemper? Hope this makes sense.

    I’m considering getting a kemper. I primarily play at home at fairly low volume. I love the sounds of overdriven Marshall’s. I have been approximating such a tone with some small modeling amps but have grown increasingly interested in the kemper. Do you recommend the power version or non powered ? I’m assuming I would ideally get some nice studio monitors to use for my home jamming ? Any input would be appreciated.

    • @guitartoneSA
      @guitartoneSA Před rokem

      Always buy the powered version if you can afford it and it's within your budget.
      Even if you don't use the Poweramp at home too often it nice to have that Poweramp available if one day you want to use it.

    • @slashtrio
      @slashtrio Před rokem

      @@guitartoneSA Thanks for the info. So basically the powered version does all the same things as the non powered except I’d also have the option to use it for live playing and gigs and such? I think I could swing the extra money if it’s partially useful. I think I would primarily be using this at home with bedroom volumes playing a long to backing tracks and music. I just want to be able to get all these great tones in one box AND achieve a great tone at low volume. So I would probably use good studio monitors.
      Can’t you also plug this into combo amps that have an effects loop and and basically use that speaker?
      Thanks!

    • @guitartoneSA
      @guitartoneSA Před rokem +1

      @@slashtrio
      Yes the Powered Kemper is identical and does everything the unpowered version does...only difference, the built in Poweramp.
      Yes you can plug the Kemper into the FX return of any tube amp or solid-state amp and make use of the Poweramp section.
      In this video I did in a friend's studio we plugged a Kemper Stage into the FX return of a solid state Marshall MGFX100.
      The audio you're hearing, we miced the room with a Zoom to capture the sound in the room ..it sounded amazing.

    Sounds Great! I actually owned one of the firsts KPA sold in Canada back in the day, but the only amp i profiled with was a Mesa Nomad 55 combo. Sold it a year after to buy an Axe FX II, because I didn't like the fact that when you bypass the cab, the amp is still colored (not completely raw).
    Would be curious to hear the difference with a capture done with the QC! Next video maybe? : )

      To me feel is not that great. You dont have tubes and speaker to give you fullnes, sustain and air push. You can hear micked sound and this is ok trough monitors and headphones...but its is still unnatural feal that you'll have trough tube amp and speaker with overtones, squeals and natural fullnes/compession...Everything in electric guitar world have some adventages and flaws. I dont want to speak about latency that I can hear...I have kemper and amps and perfer amps in terms of feel by large margine.
