Edward Sharpe And The Magnetic Zeroes: NPR Music Tiny Desk Concert

- Edward Sharpe & The Magnetic Zeros can't exactly slip into an office building unnoticed: Clad in the same clothes they'd worn at a concert the night before, the L.A. band's 10 ragtag misfits would have fit in far more seamlessly at, say, Burning Man. Seeming to exist in a blissed-out alternate universe - during the wonderful "Home," singer Jade Castrinos exclaims, "Good morning, everybody!" as the clock behind her reads 2:10 p.m. - this is a band whose performances beg to be seen as well as heard, not to mention shot through a wide-angle lens.
The biggest band to play a Tiny Desk Concert - the 10 members of The Magnetic Zeroes played three songs from their debut album (Up From Below).
The set included:
- Janglin
- Home
- 40 Day Daydream - Hudba
240p, we meet again.
Lol why is it only available in such low res?
@@juliainniss4902 Clearly NPR was still on dial-up in 2009. Can't have that 480p CZcams upload taking 3 weeks.
Feels like 2005
Shut up and listen
welcome back to napster vid quality
Bands with more than 5 members clearly aren't in it for the money.
pbnaj Just like Arcade Fire. Great bands for sure!
They just enjoy that they do... :)
+pbnaj but they DID sell "janglin" to car commercials xD i love them tho
+pbnaj
Wow. never thought of it like that. Nice observation. Never would have thought of that actually! Peace.
no bands these days are in it for the money. if you manage to make a decent living out of it, you got very lucky. most bands tour relentlessly just to be able to afford to make an album that they won't make much from because most people have stopped buying music because they can get it for free. it's a shit industry to be in these days if you're not at the top.
my god 2009 looks so vintage.... : (
Had no clue what 2020 was to bring, now this looks like the 80’s to my generation
People were just too lazy to post hd videos
@@psyzone166 it wasn't laziness. Wifi wasn't fast yet and most people still had dial up for a desktop. iPhones only came out in 2007.
And free.

Jades voice is so special. Miss that lady.
Where did she go?
Moonzilla Kudzu Queen She got kicked out of the band.
Oh Noooooooo, I just found her. 😢
Aubrey Easley All I know is that she got kicked out. They never really said why.
there was some infos like she was drug addict and didnt want to stop while other asked her to do so
her voice sounds exactly like it does on the record, i love it
My uncle Orpheo is the percussionist in the band. I’ve been lucky enough to sit in and play with the band a few times for this song. Happiest feeling ever ❤️
Of course his name is Opheo 😂 seriously tho they're made talented
nice
Omg congratulations
That’s awesome Elijah!
After I saw your response, I looked him up, and listened to his album to meditate.
I distinctly remember the first time I heard this tune (Home)...my best friend had died and I was driving cross country from Baltimore to San Francisco and was somewhere in the middle of Kansas surfing through the FM stations when this caught my ear...it took me months to find out who the artist was, but I never forgot it. Something about it just gave me the warm and fuzzies or maybe it was the emotion of Hatman passing, don't know. Whatever it was, it was magical to me.
I'm so glad that our hideous selection of FM radio stations was able to offer you this gem of a song (no sarcasm). Kansas is equal parts beautiful and awful, and our open prairies and fields can sometimes have a very magical effect with the right music.
Haha, what a great story Mark
I'm sorry you lost your friend. 😞😔
Where is Hatman now?
❤️
Since I can't find the list of musicians anywhere else, Here they are
Alex Ebert - Vocals
Jade Castrino - Vocal
Nico Aglietti - Guitar
Christian Letts - Percussion (Up front behind Alex)
Aaron Older - Bass
Tay Strathairn - Guitar (Long hair in the back)
Nora Kirkpatrick - Accordion
Josh Collazo - Percussion (In the hat)
Orpheo McCord - Keyboard
Stewart Cole - Trumpet/Vocals
At least I'm pretty sure! 240p video makes it hard to tell!
You wrong, they all named Edward Sharpe
Thanks I searched for hours with no results!!
Ledgend brother cheers
You telling me that there is no Edward in this group???? lloooolll what kind of scam is this ???
Janglin - 0:10
Home - 5:00
40 Day Daydream - 10:15

When you have seen her healthy and thriving... This becomes heartbreaking... I still love this performance... But it's much deeper than we see.... 💓
That chick is blazed out of her mind but her voice is still impeccable.
THEY ALL WERE . Now he got sober and kicked her out-and now the band is ruined . ot's a wrap. Jade is the missing link.
What is she doing now?
Tomas Rodriguez dbhs
I've seen lots of people act a lot weirder when jazzed up by performing or dancing. Maybe drugs maybe not.
Tomas Rodriguez she is autistic. idiot. have some respect
Its the most natural sounding music I have heard in a long time. Makes me feel very happy and I can feel the joy the band have in their music. Its infectious.Might start writing songs again !
I hope you started writing songs... If not hope this comment brings you back to the vid and makes you write!
Hey George, it’s been six years are you writing songs yet?
4:44 he whispers to Jade "don't resist my heart"
Yeah, he repeats it. It's kind of heartbreaking. Hence the change in the middle of the song.
What, like an order?
*Could it be an alternate or working title for the tune they were about to perform?
what would he mean by saying that?
@@elenaazeglio6154 i believe its more of “dont’ resist, my heart” as in give it your all...
In 2009, I was still missing the 90s, now I miss 2009 almost as much. Enjoy the time you’re in I guess or you’ll be looking back 8n some future and wish you had.
The flame that burns twice as bright burns half as long. I don't know much about this band but it's fairly apparent that she was the energy field that kept everything else in orbit.
She destroyed the band with her drug addiction.
@@wildkeith Well to be fair a band where the leads are lovers tend to have short live spans. She was clearly his muse and i'm sure the druggy bits helped to make this beautiful music aswell. But in the end its often also the downfall. So yeah, twice as bright, half as long seems fair enough of an observation.
@@wildkeith So she’s totally responsible for the downfall of this band? It’s was all her fault? Everyone else went clean and sober and didn’t wanna b around someone using whatever it is she was using so they went on tour without her untill (when and if) she decided to quit as well…she didn’t have an issue playing music with a bunch of turned sober hippies trying to make it in these changing times (I love this music so don’t think I’m downing them), THEY didn’t wanna play with someone who WASNT sober, so they took the authoritarian road and made that decision for her…and it became HER fault that no one was buying their music anymore? Just asking…
damn hippies, I love you
any chance the lady is on E? or just the trance?
Spoken like someone who has never had to deal with real hippies... I'm not talking about east coast, birkenstock-fish t-shirt ones who drive jettas...
Her voice and the passion she has in the songs sends chills down my spine. She’s in love with this music. You can’t feel it seeping through the speakers.
The eyes don’t lie, they must have really really tried to help Jade. She has an amazing voice! I hope she’s found peace and sobriety since she left
I hope she has. They weren’t that good to her
She wasn’t on drugs. She’s always been very animated when singing. She started a solo career and is doing good, even recorded a song with Jakob Dylan.
You are an idiot to think she is on drugs.
@@kareywhit1she absolutely had a drug problem. Alexander had a bad problem also but he was trying to stay on the right track and she wasn't, there are multiple instances of band members talking about this.
Can you please suggest what to google to find an interview?
Jade looked like me playing Wii Tennis
HandicapUser lmaooo
hilarious!! lmao
omg best comment
Hahaha
LOL
This video makes me so sad... When they are singing Home there is so much sadness in his eyes. It breaks my heart
+Sarah Smith Why?
The female signer is totally drugged out here. It's such a happy song about falling and being in love and I don't know enough about this band to know if they were ever together or just bandmates but you can see how over it all he is when he sings.
+Sarah Smith jade was, drugged on this day?
Yes, you can tell just by watching her in the video. Her movement is extremely erratic and characteristic of someone on heroin or speed. They ultimately kicked her out of the band due to her drug problems. I don't know if her and the lead singer were ever together but his eyes look like someone who loves someone he knows is already gone.
+Sarah Smith For me they look happy hahaha
NPR if you still have the original files for this and they happen to be in higher quality then 2009 YT was doing back then. PLEASE upload this again if you can up the quality. Me and manymany more are still absolutly in love with Edward Sharp and the Magnetic Zero's and this session is a brilliant gem. If you lads and lasses are able to give this an upgrade it would be loved by many !

This tiny desk concert has gotten me through some of the darkest parts of my life, multiple times. Thank you to whoever put this together.
Same. Right at this moment actually.
Holy shit. They must play this song so many times in the course of a month, but those two still look at each other with the most stunning passion and love... beautiful music, beautiful people.
This video is almost 10 years old. Holy shit. And i'm still coming back. This band holds such a special place in my heart. i'll always miss what this band used to be. whenever I get sad that they kicked jade out/changed, I remind myself of the amazing music they created for years and how i can always come back to it and that gets me through.
It’s mind-blowing to me that it was 13 years ago that I came across this session, which inspired me to buy their first album, the rest, and to attend several of their concerts. I had some remarkable times and memories listening to their music, joining them in person. They really had that “something special” and I feel happy to have gotten to enjoy it. Beauty is fleeing, but the memory lasts forever.
Wow, youre fortunate to have enjoyed them live.
When I discovered them, they had already been a shinning star and were a burned-out cinder. makes me sad.
@@sarcasticcrypto It was pretty exciting times.
Anyone watching June 2024??????🎉❤
I would give up absolutely everything I own if I could, for just one minute, love anything as much as Jade loves making music.
+dantesinporno Man, she loves drugs, herself and ......................drugs and......music
Well she sure does, but she also loved the drugs a lot... 😕
i can smell the patchouli through my computer.
Omg, yess!!!
Smells great!
I thought it was BO?
ahahahahah you right
I was thinking the exact same thing...or the potential of "tour-funk"
The pain in his eyes is so crazy, so tired from loving someone who has lost their life to drugs... I can't imagine
Is she dead? :(
@@ericalaurentino3681 nope! she was kicked out of the band for drug abuse, she's married now and preforms solo! :)

Am I the only one that tears up when i hear home? No, just me?
Well this recording is no exception.
It's like watching a whole bunch of homeless musically talented hippies write beautiful music
fuck I have never read a more accurate comment
Yeah seems like homeless hippies usually make good music
Martin D. More like shitty music
Don't you feel stupid replying to a comment thats more than two years old? I would...
Timothy Paulsen yeah maybe. What would definitely make me feel stupid is looking at the dates of the comments in the first place.
Beautiful, this is the reason for music.
Well put.
14 years later I’m still here listening to this masterpiece
Same! They have such a rich psychedelic sound full of love. Jade is a highlight for me
What ever happened to these guys though?!
@@matthewlane9874 Alex has released a few solo albums recently!
When singing home he looks like he’s trying to sing to jade but she’s not there to receive him

She was deeply addicted to drugs during this time period

god! jade has a such powerfull voice!
WOW JADE is Wonderful, what a little delight she is and that VOICE is Powerful!! Thanks NPR.
First time I saw this video I was a bit weirded out, but now it's been about a month and suddenly I have a craving to watch it again.. FUCKING BEAUTIFUL I'M CRYING!!
Blacke Chan why weirded out?
stop taking so many drugs lol
I love several of their songs, but this one, Home, is my favorite. However, you can tell that they are so cautious with Jade. She's literally super cute, but in this one, and other videos you can tell she was in her own world. It's sad that they had to kick her out, but glad she sobered up.
I'm not a groupie but I've long enjoyed their music. My feeling is Jade had the stand out voice in the group and nothing since she left is as interesting as when she was with them. Artists are often difficult and tortured souls.
the reason for the high view count is because every member of this band and their mother watched this video once
LMFAO!!!
cai meredith excecpt i discovered them today and I am on NUMBER 9 - and wondering where the heel I missed this ? Oh yes- no tv .
+cai meredith Alot of those counts are me watching it over and over and over. I love it!! Makes me happy:)
and me!
me too!
What an epic performance that I will never forget. I miss hearing Jade so much and wish she and the band would reunite someday.
Not sure what Jade is doing, but her voice is truly incredible and she’s very musical. The entire band is some kind of orchestrated chaos yet it all sounds so good, I feel like with that many members they’re really working together to contribute to that amazing sound.
Sad she got booted cuz of drug issues
UGH I WISH WE COULD STILL SEE THEM LIVE! I love watching all their performances what an amazing Band. And Jade is a gift
I think more cults should incorporate music into their secret rituals.
you just made my rainy day!!!!!!!!
Llaa
You fucking rule!!!!! 😂
Matthew McNaughton very culty
I can't explain the unexpected laughter this comment caused.
His face when they say "one more" at 9:59 is the funniest thing!
just noticed. haha!
Well it's actually pretty sad, as Jade was very high on drugs during this concert, Alex loved her like crazy and was extremely worried about her and it was hard for them to even get through the concert. That's why he was genuinely shocked about being requested to do one more song 😔
This was the first Tiny Desk concert I stumbled onto 7 years ago, and I still watch every single one. This group is all about the journey, really enjoy hearing them. If you enjoy this, watch "Big Easy Express" with Edward Sharpe, The Mumfords and Old Crow Medicine Show... world class once-in-a-lifetime fun ride.
Was not expecting to like this at all, but it was a really great watch loved it. NPR never fails.

Hard to watch Jade like that. You can see sadness in the way he looks at her.

Camille E. don't be sad do some drugs 😊
It's been a year, but why sad?!
A lot of people here are just saying that they probably stink and do drugs, what may be true, but does that really matters? I love the happy hippy family living off the grid feel to this act . I also love what NPR is doing with this Tiny Desk thing. Cool. Keep up the good work.
That first tune was performed was well. Rich with authenticity, almost broken & disjointed, natural, breathy & wooden. Love it. 💪🏻
