- This video is about how to replace, repair, fix, worn out or damaged outer ball joint on MEYLE control arm on BMW e46 1999-2003.
I replaced ball joints on my car as I started to feel vibration while driving. One side had play in ball joint and I replaced them on both sides. The same time I replaced control arm bushing as they had cracks. Also this type of wear on ball joint can cause clanking noise, fast wear of tires and bad steering control.
This video is only suitable for Meyle HD control arms! In the original control arms, the ball joints does not removable, the whole control arm must be replaced.

Hello Mr. Mike can you also make a video on the replacement of the inner ball joint of the control arm.
The same things, just include inner ball joint and hold control arm with vice.
Thanks Mike now I know exactly what to do I know someone who as that ball joint removal and installation tool I see you used
Thank you for watching! Just make sure that you have Meyle control arms as on original BMW control arms ball joint is not removable.
@@mikes.garage thanks very much I take a look the other day an it seems to me the same one you remember in your video that's the one bad on my 2004 e46 328i it doesn't seems like it can be removed like you said I'll take a second look
@@mikes.garage i have an E36, they don't have the splines, they are funny, stupid looking , but they are removable; have a new one here to replace, there are some u-t videos with that.
@@josepeixoto3384 no, I don't have videos for e36.
Good job !
Thank you!
@@johnmaginnis I found it in my garage. This is 1 inch pipe.
Hey! I know it's not a new video, but shouldn't the ball joints be under "pressure" while tightening the screws on them? I mean shouldn't we hold the control arm from below on the ball joint-side while screwing the screws?
No you don't have to do that. This procedure needed when control arms have bushings, to tight them in place. In this car bushings are different, you can't mess up with them, just make sure that they settled in place.
@@mikes.garage Thanks for your reply!
What do you mean about bushing? Is that on the place of the inner ball joint on other control arms?
@@mikes.garage By the way thank you, I'm just a student who still learns this profession, this helped me a lot
@@LegendaryBalu he is wrong. from a retired dealer tech. ANY RUBBER SUSPENSION COMPONENT MUST BE TORQUES UNDER LOAD. NO EXCEPTIONS
@@hughneutron5303 thanks for the info!
That was great man 👍 you did the job on a video in less than 8 minutes!🤔 That was really cool, but how long did it take you to do the job?.. Appreciate it thanks 👍
Thank you for watching! To do one side takes around 1.5 hours.
What is the size of the sleeve/cup in sockets 36mm or 32mm or 40mm?
I'm so sorry, but I don't have that press anymore. I guess it was 36mm
what is the ball joint part number and from which website you got them?
Read description under the video please 😉
if I have a cheap brand control arms Is it possible to change the ball joint?
I don’t think so. You need to replace entire control arm
How do you identify Meyle control arms?I have an E 46 325 ci.
The name is stamped on it “Meyle”
Is the factory control arm ball joints replaceable like this (both inner and outer)???
No, original control arm must be replaced together with ball joints.
@@mikes.garage thanks!
@@mikes.garage why is that? I’ve just ordered new joints and gotten my control arms loose, how is the original fitted then?
@@Loykaz Because BMW wants you to spend a lot of money on new parts. The title and description below the video clearly state that this process is only suitable for Meyle control arms. I am very sorry that you bought the wrong part, I hope you can return it. Be careful next time.
you can replace the outer on the om ones but not the inner
can i do same thing with m sport control arms ?
Only if you have Meyle control arms.
Que medida tiene la rotula ?
My balljoint e46 m43 2001, balljoint canot take of from arm, do you know why?
Do you have Meyle HD control arms? If not then you can't remove ball joints. You need to replace control arms first.
@@mikes.garage no, how if lemforder?
@@ahoxnugroho3197 you need to replace whole control arm.
@@mikes.garage okay, in my country canot order arm like on your video, and very high price for delivery
@@ahoxnugroho3197 you can order cheap control arms, but they not going to last for a long time.
Meister! This is original swingarm or also meyle hd?
This is Meyle HD
Hi Mr Mike. This only work in Meyle control arms? Thanks
Yes, only in Meyle control arms.
@@mikes.garage Thanks for response! 😉
Great video and explanation.
I've just bought Meyle-HD Arms for my E46, but get a bit scared because I didn't came across "Made In..." and probably they are Chinese/Turkey made.
How long the ball-joints lasted in your case?
Thanks!
The control arms that I have, were made in Turkey too. My lasted 50 000 km and can last more. I just hit log in a frozen lake, twice, and after that one side got loose. I replaced both sides and second ball joint was in great condition. I thinking they can last the same amount of time as original. This depends on your driving style and road conditions.
Thank you for watching!
@@mikes.garage Thank you for your reply!
What you think about the HD control arm bushing? Purchased pair of also, but came across many unhappy comments.
@@mladengsi2 I bought bushings together with control arms, they got cracks when I replaced ball joints and I replaced them too on my old ones which I bought a year before this. But I don't have any complaints about them. I think they can last 100 000 km for sure.
@@mikes.garage Thank you for your reply! Do you think that the ball joint can be changed more than 1-2 times. I'm wondering if the aluminium arm will handle it.
For sure you can change as many times as you need. This is life time control arm.
Great job, great video; from beginning to end !
If you used power tools, and sped it up... 2 minutes? lol
Thank you for watching! I think 2 min would be to fast 😁
Does it works if the suspension arm is the original?
No, original control arm ball joints is not removable
@@mikes.garage thanks you very much
It’s the inner ball joint replaceable?
Yes, inner joint is replaceable too. They sold separately.
@@mikes.garage good to know , but I’ve zhp control arms and I can’t take inner ball joint out
Sledge hammer with ball joint separator will help you 😉
@@mikes.garage I think that the inner it’s part of the arm but I’m not sure , thanks
If you have Meyle control arms then both ball joints replaceable. Any other brands need to replace ball joints with control arms together.
I've got original BMW control arms...
If you got original Lemforder control arms, it should last you another 150000 km.
Should've just replaced the whole control arm.
If you don't have Meyle control arm, yes, you need to replace whole control arm.
@@mikes.garagewrong , om landforder you can change them to
it would be easier to replace the whole thing.
