- Many of the most iconic plane and airport scenes were filmed in the same place - Air Hollywood, the LA production studio entirely dedicated to aviation. We take you behind the scenes of their sets to see how they created famous scenes in movies like “Bridesmaids,” “Wolf of Wall Street,” and “Kill Bill,” and in TV shows like “Brooklyn Nine-Nine,” “The Office,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” “Silicon Valley,” and “It’s Always Sunny in Philadelphia.”
Air Hollywood was also behind some of the famous plane crash sequence in “Lost.” Plus, they’ve provided the sets for music videos by artists like The Weeknd and Pitbull.
As the biggest aviation-themed studio in the world, Air Hollywood has three full aircraft interiors and an airport terminal set that’s reconfigurable into any part of the air travel experience. They’re equipped with a huge warehouse of props and costumes from different decades and can easily switch out their seats, signs, and parts to replicate different eras, settings, and memorabilia from different decades.
Their realistic production design has drawn some of TV’s and Hollywood’s biggest directors and producers, including Martin Scorsese, Quentin Tarantino, Steven Spielberg, J.J. Abrams, Mindy Kaling, and Shonda Rhimes.

Where Hollywood Shoots All Its Plane Scenes | Movies Insider - Zábava
What behind-the-scenes element do you want to learn more about? Let us know in the comments below!
Underwater scenes have always fascinated me. I always assumed actors were not actually submerged while holding their breaths but then I saw the ASIP shooting and Danny Devito almost drowned. So what is the standard way they make these scenes and specifically how actors appear to be underwater for significant periods of time?
Behind the scenes of burning 🔥 background. Such scenes feel so real. 😲
Cockpit scenes
What about the jungle places like isolated places where they shoot those action scenes
mayonley jungle scenes are usually shot in Hawaii. Like Jurassic Park. If you visit Hawaii, part of a tourist attraction is to go on a helicopter ride to visit the jungles and large parks that have been used in Hollywood movies.
“ Where Hollywood Shoots All Its White House Scenes ”
This comment is so underrated!!
YES!!! Ever since I finished watching House of Cards I always wonder where they shoot every of their White House scenes
There are a few commercially available sets for high-profile parts of the building, and some presidential libraries also have pretty period-accurate replicas of the Oval Office, if needed. Some shows will simply build their own set, as House of Cards did. West Wing, however, reused an existing set originally built for The American President, so there's not really any consistency. Nobody's really stepped up to provide the "one true location" for White House scenes, like this company has done for aviation scenes.
that's a state secret
They shoot it in the Whitehouse 😂
Planes are always way too quiet in movies.
klutz395 same in real life
@All_Roads yeah agree. That's why they use like.. pilot/military headset to communicate. Or just simply screaming to each other.
While in the movies, they doesn't need Headset and just casually talk. So weird. Even a normal civilian like me know that helicopter is so loud.
To be honest the new A350, A320neo, A330neo, B787, E190E2 are all pretty quiet inside. Newer planes are much quieter than older planes. Part of it is interior design the other part is newer engines aren't as loud as older ones.
What kinda planes you flying on?
They also give out that "stationary" feeling
To all that are remarking how they always thought real planes were used. Well you were right in your assumptions. These are real, just not functional.
BTW, I liked their motto, "Air Hollywood. Safest airline in the world".
Exactly they are built from real aircraft parts just ones that have passed their service life and been reclaimed from the scrapheap. Probably with some creative modification to enable the rapid redressing of the set, easily done when you consider real aircraft interiors need to be built to crash safety standards they don't really need that here as the worst it will experience is some fairly moderate simulated turbulence.
Real planes, minus 95% of what makes a plane real. There are no wings or tail, or engines or landing gear. No hydraulic systems or wiring. No plumbing or intercom or air conditioning. No cargo compartment or machinery areas. No tail or elevator or any instruments. No exterior aluminum skin or sensors or windshield. No supporting structure. No longerons. No bulkheads. No floors even. Just carpet over plywood. But other than that, a real plane. LOL!
of course they are the safest. they dont even fly and therefore they do not crash.
uguysrnuts yeah everyone knows that already dude, they aren't gonna keep a bunch of unnecessary stuff on the plane? And it's more than 95% anyway. What, did you think they filmed it on a real plane 😂
Solomon Tsai Thank you captain obvious
This stuff is more advanced than a real plane
Real planes are much more complicated
@Sean Ramos he's a Justin Y wannabe
*cough* *cough* A350/787
I mean they get it from a real plane. So idk what your thought process is.
yo Alex or he’s just commenting like everybody else you ass?
I’ll never look at flight scenes the same way again
I never do as a Flight Attendant they have so many scenes completely wrong 😂🤣 wrong model of the planes when they show the outside then the inside
Tea Kardashian's have been filming their private jet scene here at 1:53
DerpyDoge well yea cuz they're rich but like imma just keep it as a tea for now lol🧐🙌🤣
Lol 😂😂😂
they probably do cause the light is better lol
The Weeknd and Pitbull just got exposed 🤧
AbstractFuzion I love your profile picture 😂
The weeknd was in the gulfstream as said before, but pitbull was in a Dausault Falcon
Why? Because they film they musci videos partly on sets and in studios like EVRY OTHER ARTIST EVER?
It is obvious. How are they exposed when everyone knows about it
@@m-foh Yeah that made my OCD kick into gear, I immediately wanted to comment that but saw you did, so now I'm happy 👍
Movie planes always have way more aisle and leg room than any plane I have ever been on.
even the airport?? wow
In hindsight, I can see where it would be REALLY difficult to shut down an airport terminal for filming
@@driesm81607 I think I read somewhere that it was illegal to film inside an actual airport. Or some airports have their own policies.
Fernando Olmedo
yeah man heard something similar like that, but nothing for sure
hard to find an airport with enough spare time and space to close for filmings.
As a film student, I always assumed fitting cameras into a tiny plane is impossible. But it’s so crazy they have entirely fake planes
I wonder if that hilarious Key & Peele Turbulence sketch was filmed here 😂😂😂
Probably was! It definitely wasn't on a real plane
But does this one have a left phalange?
They put extra phalanges
I’m not sure u should ask pheobe 😂
Hopefully, they put extra phalanges just in case!
😆😆😆
Omg Phoebe lol
who else thought they actually use a real plane😂😂😂😂😂
katie MEEE
00
Careful there, I was a liaison onboard while the Hangover 2 movie was filmed. The scene when they travel to Asia was filmed on a Delta 777. Some movies do use real planes.
I don't think about anything lol
Actually I've never thought about it in the first place .. I've never thought if they either they use an entire sit or an adjustable replicas .. so Ha ha you're the idiot not me.
Wait ...
the one plane scene thats traumatized me is in jessie where she stuck a spork in her neck.
0:47 Greatest Bonks of all time.
I always thought they used real planes lol
They are real planes just out of service
I love this Movies Insider series! Congrats Insider and don't stop bringing this type of content for us!
That was so awesome thanks! So well done and no boring fluff!!!
"Some of the most memorable movie scenes"
SEX AND THE CITY 2
This is really one for movies made since the facility was opened. Many classic airplane scenes were shot at Universal Studios - who once had multiple standing airplane sets.
Some scenes are filmed on real aircraft. The scene in The Hangover 2 was filmed on a 777 at LAX. The plane was in between flights between LAX and SYD. It took almost 8 hours to shoot a scene that lasted just a few seconds in the movie.
Everyone: "omg how cool"
Me: "OMG A GREYS ANATOMY CLIP"
After going through all that trouble customising the interior sets for their movies/shows, Hollywood still manages to have continuity errors when it comes to matching airliner interior and exterior shots. For example, the interior could be a twin aisle 300+ seater wide body and the exterior shot be of a single aisle airliner or Jumbojet exterior with single aisle interior. That aways ruins the illusion for me.
Yeah - peeps be watchin Snakes on a Plane - daaaaamn, did these fools really use a single aisle exterior shot? GTFOH Hollywood
“Gonna play captain” *is handed a first officer jacket* xD
Really interesting to see how they handle all those plane scenes, I thought they did then on planes as well
Them: "Where do they shoot the plane scenes?"
Me: "On a plane?"
Them: "Yes, but no, they use old planes which are reassembled on a set..."
Me: "So, a plane. Got it"
This is the coolest business idea I’ve heard in a while! Hope you guys are rich now 😽💦
01:01 pretty sure this not out how they take them apart and "rebuild them"
2:32 I sure do love when the pilots throttle back during take off
You will see me posting a picture of me inside "my" private plane on Instagram soon
My exact thoughts
You can do that, there is a service provider IIRC in russia who offers an 1h photoshooting in a privte jet for instagram hoes
FINALLY! I've always wondered about this!
This so the perfect video for something I’ve never thought abt before
XD it's all serious till 0:11
They should have this stuff on display for the public. Just think of all the history that was filmed there
i never knew and never thought about plane scenes that much but i’m glad i learned about it!!
So this (and a lot of CGI) is how they can make Air Crash Investigations feel so real...
This was a cool video as I love the behind-the-scenes stuff. I had no idea there was an airplane production company but it makes sense. At 3:39, in the scene from “The Office,” is not a set. It’s the airport in Ontario, CA. There are two terminals and one of them has much less traffic than the other so is often used for filming. It’s not uncommon to walk off a plane and see an entire production being shot a couple gates down, at the baggage claim or at the check-in counters. Lots of commercials are shot there as well. The previous Ontario terminal (the new one is shown in The Office scene) still stands at the end of the runway and is often used for period films like Catch Me If You Can (it was the Miami airport) and Argo (depicted as an airport in the Middle East).
I like how I'm watching this right now when I'm supposed to be flying out to Tennessee this next month and I've never flown on a plane before LOL
@Maybe it’s Just me I hope so too I'm really excited and kinda scared
Don’t take the Boeing 737 max!
Dont be scared its awesome on the plane but you might not like it when the plane is going up and down
oh no it's been 17 hours, where are you,you damn savannah!!
😇@@imtheproblemitsme1989 🛫🌍🛬Hope your flight and trip was wonderful for you.✈💺🍸safe journey! If you are at your destination ..... Good times to you Savannah. Cheers 🥂🍹🍷
0:11 " I have hated this Mother-*BEEP* Snakes On This Mother-*BEEP* Plane.
Close enough 🙃
Had it*
Producer: we should just film the scene here
Tom Cruise: Nah, we're keeping real. No landing till we're done
Oh my gosh, that’s the old United First Suite! LOVE!!!!!
That Is so cool I always thought they used real planes (not really) lol
This was so cool and so well-done. Thank . you for this video!
I have been wondering about those plane scenes for a long long time. Thanks, now i know.
Woah, too much excitements.... 😁😄 I find this enticing !
When ppl ask "Why are movies so expensive to make?"
Me: This vid
For the outcome to look more realistic, the producers were creative enough to simulate turbulence with airbags so that the actors can feel and react as if they were in a real plane. That was very clever. 👏👏👋
Bruh I wish I can have this kind of business
Getting on a plane to fly to a plane set. Amazing.
thats pretty dope
This was very cool! Thanks for sharing.
I thought these were real Boeings.
“real Boeings” 🤦♀️
This looks like the same place from Taylor Swift’s “Look what you made me do” video
Probably
Well there's another place... the former Ontario Airport (California) terminal at 1940 Moore Way. This was where they shot the airport scenes of Catch Me If You Can. They also had a full size 737 out there some years ago in a hangar that they would use for films and commercials.
This is awesome!!
this was really interesting and enlightening!
This is so fascinating!!!
I never thought about this until now
Truely fascinating
Back when I was a double, They just glued signs in a hotel to make it look like a airport
“Aircrafts” lol
Fascinating!
The more I watch how actions movies are made the more I love drama and real life stories
INSIDER always brings good and high quality content!
Damn cool. I'm very impressed.
I've always wondered if they filmed at a real airport. Cool video!
That's so awesome!
I filmed a commercial at Air Hollywood a few months back, really great setup
Ending in the cockpit from "Airplane" was a very nice and unexpected touch. I would have done the same.
That is so cool! Man I wish I worked there!
That host dude looks like an older version of Ned from the BuzzFeed Try Guys.
Wow, that cockpit design is what I wanted for my flight sim.
That's a First Officer Jacket. Straight to the right seat!
RIP 0:11 I DONT EVEN WANT TO GO FURTHER 😂😂😂
Now to find that beautiful Antonov 225 cockpit they used in 2012
Man! That’s just plane crazy! 😜
I WANT MORE!
I loved the episode Business Trip from The Office 😂
Always wondered. Thanks.
4:07 he's wearing a first officer's uniform. For a captain, there are four stripes on the epaulet; a first officer has three. And that black and white hat belongs on a cruise ship. Pilot caps are (mostly) black.
I love it!!!...💙🍀👍🏼👌🏼☝️🥰❤️😎👏🏻💯😍😘🤩
Mind blown
This is so cool 😱❣️
4:21 (pulls back right after setting takeoff thrust)
LOL. cleared for takeoff. Toga. V1. Pull up! All in 3 secs. Seems legit hahaha.
getting to love movie insider😇
1:00 All office fans got excited 😂
0:11 me when there is no wi-fi on the plane
So cool!
YOU WENT ON THE PLAIN THE OFFICE CAST WENT ON!?! (sorry I’m fangirling)
I think Dababy used the private jet too lool love him
Flight scenes will never be the same again now ive watched this.
0:43 wth I own that suit case he picked up 😂
Very cool!
Very cool....always wondered how they did this
The first class scene in Inception was a set (at 0:23), however the arrivals scene in the International terminal at Customs at LAX was on location.
I've never wondered about it but now I saw the title, now I do
That thought never crossed my mind
Ah! What a beautiful sunrise. **stares at green screen**
I wish that all planes look like tv and movie planes! The seats are always huge and they look so much nicer 😂
The gang beats Boggs is awesome
