Speaking of hair in the mouth, my dad is Alan and he has a story about playing at Red Rock in Colorado, and while he was singing backups a giant moth flew into his wide open mouth. He had no choice but to swallow it and keep singing! True professional, eh?

@@blueskiesaboveus ha ok, warning it will be disappointing bc it is more a story I want to get off my chest and it was after your dad had quit. BTW, I am a father of 3 and it is heart-warming to know that even being at the level of success he was at that he missed his family so much he decided it was more important and gave it up. As I dad I really get that. But here is my story - I was 12 or so when Hi Infidelity came out - and in high school I started buying all the REO albums starting with the first one back in 1970 or so. I was an REO nut and I probably am more so today than I was back in the day. Well, I really loved all the guys but I attempted guitar haha and Gary just became my idol. Well, I saw REO live in 1987 - still have the t-shirt I bought and your dad was still in. Then in 1989 REO was playing again so I went to see them - fired up - and trust me I didnt go to concerts - so back then - in college - i had only been to 3 concerts - Lynyrd Skynyd twice and I was on my way to see REO again. Well, back in those times we didnt have internet and access to every bit of info you ever wanted ... well, I go to see REO and they come out on stage and Gary isnt there. Well. the venue was outside and after the concert I folllowed the fence the kept everyone out far enough out of eyesight, climbed it and jumped over (about a 12 foot fence so no easy task). I make my way back to where the concert was and there were a bunch of trailers and I have no idea which one REO is in but someone comes out of one of the trailers and says "the band needs utensils" and I quickly chime in that I will get them. So I go around to the trailers acting like I belong asking for utensils for the band and I go in and there they are. So I give the utensils and then tell them I dont work there, I snuck back and am a HUGE fan (I had my REO shirt on from 1987). It's just me and them. And Bruce gets up and talks to me a little, Neal ... Kevin says that it's "cool you had the balls" to do what I did. I also had my REO live you get what you play for cassette and they all signed it for me. So, it bothers me TO THIS DAY that I professed to being a huge REO fan and if so how could I not ask the question that was burning on my mind "where the hell was Gary and who the hell was this new guy (Dave)". I guess I was just too nervous. It wasnt until about 15 years later watching VH1 behind the music I learned that Gary was kicked out about 1 month before that concert. How cool would it have been to get the scoop directly from the band just one month after the fact had I mustered up the courage to ask. Well, fast forward again and my son and I are going to and REO concert - this was probably about 2017. And I am bound and determined to let REO about what happened many years ago - yes I am a nut lololol. So my son and I work our way up to near the front and after the concert I get Bruce's attention and throw him a note I had already typed up at the office. He picked it up - dont know if he ever read it. The note basically said what I had said and that I was upset for not asking about Gary after claiming to be such a good fan. I put my cell in the letter asking whoever got it (wasnt sure when I typed it who I would have the opportunity to give it to) to call me to let me know they read the note. Hahahahaaha, yes, I know this is crazy but I am just that way. I dont like a lot of things - dont like Hendrix, the Stones, Clapton, Aerosmith etc... but what I like I LOVE - and that is REO and Skynyrd and REO is my number one. Lolol. Pass this on to your dad and I am sure he will think I am extremely weird - haha, I get it. Again, I am just obsessive about what I like lol. I have even contact the hall of fame as to how it is a crime REO isnt there. Very interested to hear your response to this, lololol!!!

@@patrickferrara6668 Ha, that's a wild story! I'll pass it on to my dad! Gutsy of you to climb that fence and fake your way into their trailer. But, I can imagine that once you were in there, it might be hard to be like, "who's this new guy?" It's interesting to think that fans didn't really know why/if there were line-up changes. I took it for granted that everyone would know this stuff. But of course, how would they?! And yeah, my dad had a good run - and it was fun for us as little kids to tour with him and stuff - but we're all glad he quit when he did. Thanks for contacting the hall of fame! Maybe some day...

I loved REO during their 70s days when they were a great mid West hard rock band before the era of the big ballads, though I still find them "a guilty pleasure". Kevin Cronin is a very distinctive singer and his background in folk gave REO a slightly different edge for a hard rock band. Gary Richrath was a very under appreciated guitarist and provided most of that hard rock edge. I have read that Gary was a big influence on no less a luminary as Slash.

I did security for REO when they played at Hershey Park Stadium/Arena in 1985. I was in the military police at the time and a fellow MP knew the guy who ran security at that venue. We were able to do REO and The Greatful Dead the following week. This was maybe a month or two prior to the Live Aid concert. We were asked if we could help out for that concert as well, but our commander would not allow us to do that one. I think because of how big it was going to be, he was afraid if something happened that the Army may get into a mess. It was fine though. On the REO concert I was posted on the right side of the stage. It was definitely an experience I'll never forget. It's not everyday you get to meet, not to mention doing security for one of your favorite bands. A girl gave me her camera, and asked me to take some pictures for her. I did it, and I know she got some awesome pictures that night. I never did get to see how they came out. Maybe one day she will see one of these posts and remember.

You know, I am a huge REO fan, seen them live countless times and they never disappoint. I do wish Gary stayed with the band because he was the driving force behind REO. Not saying anything bad about Dave Amato but Gary just had this unique style. Also, I want to tell you that I love how you did your homework on REO, saying how they got their name, some of their albums, what they peaked on the charts. Great video! Thank you sir!

Kevin's voice is so strong. He loves to talk to the crowd too! Their final song is usually Riding the storm out. The venue is usually outside and of course the siren starts the song out and ya see lightning come in on cue! Lol

You didn’t mention the lead guitar player, and I saw the band in 76, and he stole the show! Ridin’ the storm out would be a great tune to analyze especially from the lead guitar perspective. Gary is great on the tune as well. I’ve loved this band for many years!

Huge part of my childhood. Like Cheap Trick, Styx and the Smashing Pumpkins, REO Speedwagon are from my home state of Illinois. Critics were absolutely evil to this band and today they are close to forgotten. I was shocked recently to see their biggest album “Hi Infidelity” listed in a Rolling Stone (I believe) list of best whatever. They have some great music to discover. Thanks for reminding me.🙂
