    Agree 1,000% on the merch thing. You can't even get half of the Scorchers gear (jerseys included!!) on the team's website.
    Glad to see the quality of the merch has gone up since last year though!
    Agree on the education element too. I'm a Scorchers season ticket holder and don't even know our record holders. I assume they're all just Tayo???
    Feel like if it ever were able to happen, you'd be a really valuable member of the player's union.

      Yh I want to see if our merchandise situation can be improved, that's a shame you can't order jerseys.

    I think a big thing is infrastructure, most teams are playing in school halls I’m a Plymouth fan and we are unbelievably lucky being able to play in the pavilions however,renting so high, we cannot afford it and there is a chance we are going to have to move and there is nowhere else to go in Plymouth.

    • @joshsteel
      @joshsteel  Před rokem +4

      School halls is probably a tad bit if an exaggeration I can't lie. However yeah teams should all be aiming to have their own arenas for sure. It makes life a lot easier on the budget in the long run and allows for more brand freedom and creativity. Bristol and Sheffield are in the middle of that process rn

    • @joshsteel
      @joshsteel  Před rokem +1

      Also sorry to say.... pavillions is probably every players least favourite court to play on 😅
      The concrete floor hurts my bones and the baskets only allow swishes or dunks

    Expansion of the league will most likely be the most important especially as it make the play-offs more grand as less teams get in. Location will be important but also their ability to compete in the league so they don't become regulars at the bottom half of the standings, but there are many strong teams in NBL with their youth system and fanbase, which have teams in the WBBL, or the BBL could admit new teams created for the BBL We will just have to wait and see.

    • @joshsteel
      @joshsteel  Před rokem +2

      Yh no doubt. bigger league=better
      I think the only problem with NBL teams coming up is their location and their ceilings
      Of course not every team needs to be in big markets but the more the better imo

    I feel like a system needs to be put in place for kids after competing CBL/EABL particularly the ones who don’t get a scholarship to states but instead get one at a good BUCs institution. Equally having a teams and Universities working along side with each other, the only one I know of is Loughborough; personally, feel like more pro teams and unis should follow this approach looks like a win win to me

  • @Thehillsfamily2009
    @Thehillsfamily2009 Před rokem +3

    Absolutely for real, the path toward making the BBL viable for youth is absolutely crucial. The fact that it doesn't have MORE Kaboza's and Weluche's across the board is damning man. I mean, in a sense, what is the purpose of some of these teams (not naming names lol) that don't have any youth on their roster? There is no potential for the team to grow upward, they're just stagnating, signing the same rotation of American guys every year with no continuity. They can't (and won't) win anything, but have no, comparatively (compared to another college guy), cheap prospects who could give that upside (even if it's an EABL player who can play sparse minutes). I know the teams I watch on rotation, and the teams I always skip, because they actually have an exciting future/strong-minded project in tow. The fact that now there is a team that can offer European basketball (and hopefully a few more in the coming years) in terms of developing talent (and seem keen to also) is so massive for the league.
    (Also the fact there isn't a collective to make sure of you guys' wellbeing in the BBL is criminal, get that Union ASAP bro)

    • @joshsteel
      @joshsteel  Před rokem +1

      Absolutely mate, couldn't agree with you more. Teams without that in mind are doing a disservice to the domestic game. It's small minded "win this year thinking". So I hope it's something that is available for the next generations.
      Yh union is a tricky one w out continuity but something we desperately need. Even if it is only for domestic players. But i think it's definitely something we can achieve in the near future

    • @Thehillsfamily2009
      @Thehillsfamily2009 Před rokem

      @@joshsteel obviously I have absolutely no knowledge about the landscape man, you're the guy on the ground of course, but I remember Dan Clark going into his want for a Union too in his podcast with Sam Neter, I'm sure there are a few more guys that'd be very much behind it too. I'd just spark the idea round man, just spread it in team circles, your GB basketball circles, you never know who'd be willing to throw their weight behind it. It literally just takes that one guy to bring the idea to fruition.
      I just hate the non-guaranteed contracts thing, the way that a player can literally be cut and forced to relocate immediately on the whim of a club is horrible to me. It's just a lazy escape for their poor recruitment and player management, and the player has to pay the price.

    They should televise some of the games. Like im convinced more people want to watch basketball than a sport like polo or golf 😂😭. It doesn't have to be all the games, but maybe the championship games, or at least the London Lions' games. It ain't hard to just slap a 60 minute time window for 1 BBL game a week on literally any TV channel.

    The development pathway needs some work for sure, it's hard for British clubs when their youth prospects could leave for free to go to college in US (or a Spanish academy) after spending all the time developing them over the years. And not every player wants to 'work their up the bench' whilst working a regular job around training either. Whichever way the league chooses to go as (hopefully) more money rolls in we need to make sure some money aside for it and not just spent on higher profile imports.

    • @joshsteel
      @joshsteel  Před rokem +1

      Yh money is one thing that will always help. A minimum wage would stop the need to work another job (not that that is a current rampant issue but it isn't unheard of)
      However like I mention the video, we're not the only country that faces these hurdles. And yet they manage to retain much more of their youth than us.
      I agree coaches in the our league need to put a focus on development so kids aren't just sitting on the bench the entire year(loan them out or actually play them) but unfortunately there isn't a guarantee that they'll play wherever they decide to go (yes even the State's)
      And even if they do go to the states for 4 years (more power to them) work to be one of the players options coming out of college, the job market is extremely competitive and having a place to continue to develop is major
      But that's not even close to the situation because the pathway is nonexistent imo

      @@joshsteel loaning players out to NBL 1/2 is hard too as a lot of the Americans who are their on scholarships through the Uni system are nice TBH. Far better (or further along) than the British development players usually.

    • @joshsteel

    Other teams can't afford to enter the league, Leeds used to be in the league but had to fold, Worcester had to drop down a league as they couldn't afford it and Birmingham want to make a team but can't quite afford it. But now the salary cap is gone the league will quickly start to increase in value thus resulting it in being bigger and stronger
