For those who don't know, Jock Sutherland is one of the pioneer surfers of the North Shore of Oahu, there's even a surf break named after him. He's 74 years old. Go Jocko!

Jock was my favorite surfer of the 60's, along with Billy Hamilton and Barry K. His switch footing Sunset on that little spear, which was in the opening shots every week on the Wide World of Sports introduction for many years - iconic. Drops in and does the coolest fly away kick out - I think it was the Duke contest. So glad to see you still surfing!!!!
Ilima Kalama, Dave Kalama's dad, told me BK or Barry Kanaiaupuni was the best surfer he ever saw. And he saw em all.

OMGosh! Mahalo❤Nui for posting this! I grew up with Jock and have been wondering how he is, as I have been living in Kona. He is 2 years older than me and back in the 60’s I was in awe of him and rather intimidated by his intellect. About 20 years ago, I looked him up and we had a wonderful talk story of the 60’s … such a different perspective many decades later. Great to see him looking so happy .. wonder when this video was taken? I have memories of him … our family lived on the rip between Laniakea & Himalayas and when second reefs going off … we would see Jock who had paddled surfing the whole way from Chun’s!!! No one else out!!! He admitted that for surfing big stuff, it was easier being high 😂 … yeah so many guys from our 60’s era have told me that, especially surfing Waimea (but Eddie was never high, as he was so deeply connected). Am so grateful to have been surfing at this time … no crowds, no leashes, only long boards and we all looked after each other. When I went over to his house in the 60’s, they were playing chess and his mom Audrey was sooo amazing … just loved her energy … she has accomplished amazing things … go look her up!

I have had the fortune of surfing with Jock at his wave many times over the years and I am so grateful to him for showing surfers that aging doesn't have to limit our ability to continue charging big waves. Thank you Jocko for the lifetime of inspiration and stoke. Hope to surf with you again soon.
