I once had a band teacher who knew Barney Chance. It was hard to talk to him about 'Barney' without bringing him to tears. His name was Herbert Hazleman. He's in the NC Bandmasters hall of Fame.

I was given the opportunity to compose the "Incantation" movement of this piece for Alto Flute and then took up the Piccolo part for the "Dance" movement. - Thomas Jefferson Symphonic Band, Class of 2003; 1st Chair Flute

there's no way you're playing this for your 7th grade band, my wind symphony band played this and their in 11th or 12th grade but it would make sense if your all state band did (if you have one).

The brass is good, but the woodwinds are unimpressive.

It is really tough to find a high school concert band with 2 Bassoons, 2 Contra bassoons, 2 contra bass cl., 2 contra alto cl, 4 bass clarinets, and at least 3 alto clarinets, which is what you need to fill out the bottom end of the woodwind section. Even an All State band wouldn't have that kind of Low Woods unless they went looking for it. I see one lonely Contra Bass Clarinet, mandatory for this piece - and the part that I played - And a good number of Bass clarinets, but no bassoons.

@@marquis999 after many years playing in community bands and church orchestras I can say that those are the instrumentalists that never have to say they're sorry 😂
