My rabbit once thumped at me, so I looked him right in the eyes, and thumped my foot on the ground as hard as I could. My rabbit then got SUPER angry, and tried to tip his entire litter box over.

As cute as thumping is my bunny literally thumps at nothing, I can be laying in bed reading a book and he will be just chilling out, nothing will change in the room and he will just start freaking out and stomping his feet super loud, this only happens during the evening and I always just ignore him or just ask him what's wrong every time he does it, I dont get up I just call out to him from where I am, and when I do check out what's going on there's literally nothing wrong, but when I start talking to him he stops, he will stomp a few more times but the more I talk the less he does it.

Rabbits also thump when they are horny, excited, feeling playful, annoyed, frustrated and rarely, when they are scared. A rabbit on alert is not looking to be pet and the first thing to do is investigate the situation.
My rabbit is a massive diva on all accounts and does not thump in fear ever. However, one night she did and was on full alert, eyes big, ears pricked , tense body. I heard the sound that was triggering her and picked her up and took her to go see....it was a mouse stuck in a bucket. The sound of it trying to jump out was what triggered her. 😂

  • @keenawireheart7238
    @keenawireheart7238 Před 3 lety +76

My old bunny stomps as a display of excitement. If i come near, he'll get really energetic, and if I give him attention, the stomping and binkying starts. I can't seem to find an example of this online or anyone saying that it has nothing to do with fear, annoyance, or being spoiled. I know for sure it's purely a habit of playful expression, but I don't know exactly how it started. It's not a bad habit as you mentioned either, because when I leave him alone, he doesn't continue to stomp for attention even if I'm in the same room and in view. He's 14 years old, so it's possible he gave up on bad habits that weren't encouraged but kept the temptation to stomp? Whatever the reason, it's adorable. (I know what his fear/pain stomping looks like and can tell the difference.)

Hi Amy! It's Ruth from WOHS! This came up under suggested videos and imagine my surprise to see that someone I know has a popular rabbit CZcams channel! have 2 rabbits, Cleo and Sadie (a rex and a Californian) and love them to pieces. I'll definitely be subscribing. Hope you're doing well :)

So, in principle, thumping is a rabbit equivalent of expletive

Wow, I have not yet seen any person explaining rabbit behavior that 'speaks rabbit' as well as you do, I'm impressed and endeared. And I love your old girl there, she reminds me of my old Lady Luna, sadly deceased almost a year ago. Thankfully I still have a whole warren in little groups to take care of at the petting farm downstairs and two beautiful young sisters that I'be known from birth here at home. How did you get to learn rabbit language so well? Beautiful how you got to pick those snippets of video from your no doubt huge collection to perfectly illustrate what your telling us. They're great examples really

We once had a rabbit and we use to let her roam around in the garden for a while before putting her back in her hutch. She use to stomp her foot when she got put back inside and then we decided that it was best for her to live in the garden. She even dug herself a barrow. ❤️

There is a few reasons a rabbit/bunny thumps.
They can give a warning thump, as in "Don't come any closer" type thump.
They can thump to say they are annoyed or angry.
They know that if they thump, they can get attention (My oldie did it every night, because he wanted attention, then he was happy once he got it).
There is more, but would be quite a list, it is very important to read and understand your family member on what he or she is telling you.
    A nice video ^^

When I was in middle school my rabbit would snort and thump at me when I got home from school and she would ignore me for a while. She lived in my bedroom and only liked me. If my mom tried to come into my room she'd chase her out. Greta looked a lot like the rabbit in this video except she had longer fur. Miss her. Had her for about 10 years after adopting her from a rescue in 6th grade.

First time my rabbit thumped scared me. I was alone at night out in the country. At the time didn't know why she was thumping but got the idea probably something outside scared her. So I was a bit scared myself - possibly a bear was prowling. Fortunately, her cage was in the house with me.

This is an old post but just came across it and felt compelled to reply. My male rabbit does the same thumping and it annoys the crap out of me. I have 2 rabbits and one thumps if I show the other the slightest affection but more irritating is when I have to put him back in his hutch...he stomps then runs off and a long chase ensues around the yard (not for the faint-hearted) I feel like rabbit are more spoiled divas as some folks commented. I'm so over it!

Learning the language of all types of animals is so much more important, to me, than the drivel we see in modern entertainment. When people say things like, "Rabbits are stupid", or, "I hate cats because they're jerks", or "I can't handle having a dog; they're too needy and noisy", it drives me bonkers. Learn the language first, Skeeter, and maybe you'll start to really appreciate them.

I heard a bang noise in my closet and when I opened it, my bunny thumped and her ears were very forward and a minute later she thumped again. Its weird how I was scared by the noise and so was she, but it wasn't loud or startling, it was just a weird noise that made no sense, and my bunny isn't scared of loud noises

My bonded pair used to switch who was top rabbit. The top rabbit would only thump when he sensed danger and once when he was mad at me for eating lox. The scout rabbit (the submissive rabbit would always be the first to hop up to me while the other watched and expected me to come to them with the treat) would only thump when they were excited by a treat - on the level of "I'm so excited I could pee," especially when they heard me loading up the treat ball.
