Believe it or not, there are a lot of haters, here in Mexico some people complain about how they were so "privileged", so "whitexicans" for having musical education, good instruments even when thery were kids, for having parents that cared about their children's dreams basically or just because they are beautiful women. The story of The Warning is kinda "different" from most mexican bands and people don't like that.

  • @fourortwelvestrings
    @fourortwelvestrings Před 2 měsíci +65

"Malinchista" is a *uniquely* Mexican insult. It refers to the young Nahuatl woman called "La Malinche," who was sold to Cortés as a translator as a teenager, and helped the conquistadors and their Nahuatl allies defeat the Aztecs (in the end this did not go well for the Nahuatl people, either). She later had a child by Cortés, and married one of his lieutenants. She was and is a very controversial figure whose role in history has been debated and has changed considerably back and forth over the years. Was she a traitor or was she trapped unwillingly in a role she never meant to play? Anyway, it's very a deep and bitter insult in Mexican culture, and to say that the sisters were enraged by being called this in the press might be understating things just a little bit. They always say in interviews how much they love Mexico and Pau in particular has said she never wants to move anywhere else for their career. So yeah, this song could have been much more dark, but having it be a peppy sing-along just adds to the magnitude of the finger they were giving. :)

I once read a book about Malinche, truly a fascinating figure - she was an integral part in what probably was one of historys key changes. Just think about what would have happened if she would have translated differently or betrayed Cortez - Malinchista would probably be a positive term today. Anyway, I completely understand why they were so furious about this insult - awesome comeback really, the biggest middle finger I can think of

The key lyric in Spanish is “Malinchista”. If your wife is Mexican, she will know exactly what it means. This song is a response to their critics who criticized them for not singing in Spanish, so appropriately enough, they write their first Spanish song as a middle finger.

Another thing to point out is how the band got to compose and sing in English. Basically, it all happened by random circumstances. They learned music from English spoken bands because of their dad’s preference and they learned to speak in English at school (which is common in Mexico).
They also got viral and got invited to Ellen’s show, where they took the opportunity to go to an American school to learn more. They were basically forced there to re learn how to compose music because they used to follow the solfège method in Mexico.
That is important because they now got used to the language and how to compose following the common method in US. At the end of the day, they prefer English because it’s also an easier language for music (I know both languages fluidly).
When they get asked on why they sing in English, their usual response is “because we can and want to”. It shouldn’t be a huge of a deal, but sometimes people are not used to things out of their zone of comfort. They are changing that mentality one fan at the time.

One thing about malinchistas is that they will always try to deny or justify their malinchista tendencies.
Unfortunately it IS true that they are somewhat disconnected from their Mexican culture when it comes the musical aspect. However, they are not the ones to be blamed for how their parents raised them when it comes to musical preferences.
Personally i applaud them for at least trying to sing and compose in spanish. I hope they investigate and delve deeper into their own Mexican musical heritage. What we as mexican society can and should work on is for our future generation of youth to break with the vicious cycle of malinchista tendencies in their own parenting.
I am still waiting for the day when Mexicans proudly and publicly reference their own people as idols and role models instead of outside impositions and influences being their principal and constant reference

You are quickly becoming one of my favorite reactors, because not only you dissect the song in a manner non-musicians can understand, which adds to the listening experience next time I hear the song, but you also have such a good humor and genuinely enjoy it. As for the song, yes, this was a middle finger song to all those Mexican critics who said that they were "Malinchistas" because all their songs were in English when they were a Mexican band, so Pau got mad and wrote this jewel of a song, ha ha. Truth is: 1) they grew listening to Rock in english; 2) they attended a private bilingual school; 3) they live in Monterrey, very close to the US border and cultures kind of mix more because of that, so when they started writing, it just came natural to do it in English, no hidden agenda on it. As for not being Mexican enough, it is nonsense because at their concerts they always proudly say they are from Mexico, and in interviews too, also they have said many times that they want to show the World that in Mexico there is talent. But well, haters will hate no matter what, right?.... Great reaction and nothing to do with it but I like that you have some "Huichol" art on the back, those people make amazing crafts. Cheers!

I think it was Dany who also noted that it's just *easier* to write in English, because (largely because it's a mish-mash of several different languages) English is simply more _flexible_ than the more grammatically rigid Spanish. Lots more word-sounds to choose from as synonyms for rhyming, for example. Which isn't to say their offerings so far in Spanish aren't gems in and of themselves; I think Martirio is one of the most gorgeous rock songs ever recorded!!!

There is a presentation with Eruca Sativa (an argentinan trio) in Monterrey where she get out of the drums to sing Olivia's Rodrigo "Brutal"

I'm from Chile and even though we speak spanish, we don't use "malinchista" (it is a mexican idiom) so I also didn't get all the meaning of the song at first and I had to look that word up
What I found is that it comes from a mexican salve called Malinche and that she was an enabler for the spanish conquerors (even the lover to one of them)... so it's quite a heavy word their critics used, all because they choose to write their songs in english until this point
And I mean, I get it, our ears are more acostumed to rock in english (except for the argentinian rock of the 80's ,like Soda Stereo, but Argentina was at war with the British at that time so...), and english is the dominant language nowdays... I don't see anyone criticizing kpopers and idols for havinmg english in their songs
I don't like this thing about latam critics... they see one of our own being somewhat successful and they look for something to bring them down
good for them to give them this "middle finger"
BTW... ATRAS DE LAS COCINAS... I can't un-hear it now LOL

Yes, If Mana, Caifanes/Jaguares, Cafe Tacuva, Motolov and other didn't fear of similar criticism they could have reached a wider audience. There are very few bands that have entered the world stage while not singing in English, actually the only ones I can think of is Rammstein and maybe BandMain (since they recently toured in Mexico and USA).

The song was written after Pau and the band were criticized for doing most of their songs in English. They were being narcissistic and kissing up to the Americans. Pau is singing front and center as a big middle finger to the critics. Pau could easily front the band but it's way too important to have her behind the drums. I agree Pau is a beast no doubt. To quote one of my favorite movies she may be small but she is strong her first baby came out sideways and she didn't scream or nothin. 🤣 edit: ironically this is one of the few songs that Mony(mama) helped write. Also I keep seeing people reacting and saying in a roundabout way but not realizing that The Warning has their own unique sound...they are creating their own genre of rock imo which does not happen very often. Ironically the Mexican press is embracing them now as the new rock godesses of Mexican rock.

The second verse is also my own favourite part of the song. Once Pau starts belting, its goosebumps time. Also, they do use backing tracks quite a lot for their songs, to keep the sound full with just being a three-piece. But songs like this are a great example how they can use that to enrich the experience, instead of taking away from it (as some purists like to argue). They even switched up the bridge section to include a drum solo for the guest drummer lol.

I think another aspect of this tune that's important to remember is that Pau angrily dashed this off when she was about 15 years old, and had to go back to her mother for grammar correction. Also, I think because of how they were raised, there is I suspect a bit of an intimidation factor, since she's basically taking on a reasonably respected published music critic - a heady task for any teenager, anywhere! But because she's Pau, she wasn't about to back down, either. 😋
So, while her "retort" might not have contained the zing to it that she might well feel comfortable writing today, it's still pretty ballsy for a teenage girl.

As noted elsewhere all three sisters began by playing classical music on the piano. That and all of the concert videos they watched as really young children of bands such as Queen and AC/DC is the base they started from in learning musical theory so it is not surprising they have a much deeper understanding of song structures than many. After all, combining legendary rock bands with composers such a Brahms what else should we expect. Of course, them being ridiculously talented and incredibly stubborn young ladies that would stay and practice and practice till they "got it right" is how Dany described learning covers. Pau said a whole new world opened for her when she started composing on the piano and could hear how chords would sound. From their mother she described Ale as extremely persistent and Ale herself has said practice, practice.
Once again, the moral of the story is don't piss Pau off.
About what you were saying towards the end my understanding is that as originally conceived the song was perhaps more in your face but they were still really young. I believe that Mony, mom, toned it down a little bit. Since this was the first song they released in Spanish they asked their mom to proofread it and help with the grammar.

These are such awesome deconstructions of the music and lyrics! I also hate it when they keep talking about me behind the kitchen! Haha! I am loving your journey down The Warning rabbit hole! Disciple at Teatro Metropolitan would be another good one to deconstruct or anything from that performance.

Next song: Queen of the Murder Scene (live at Teatro Metropolitan). It has everything: badass bass, badass drums, badass riffs, solo, harmonies, stage presence, nasty vocals, evil, background screams recorded by Dany, really catchy, etc.
It’s basically the climax of their concept album with the same name. You will be forced to do a bit of research to understand the song. But oh man is worth. You’ll find Dust to Dust is from same album and you’ll want to react to all of it.

@@LorraineBaker-vm9vl I would not call it "reaction". It`s legit review.

@@elah1023thank you all! It’s funny, I wasn’t sure whether to call my videos reactions or reviews or breakdowns or analysis.. I settled on “reacts” only because it’s my first time hearing the songs, and I wanted it to have that fun and spontaneous reaction element. Me going on about the analysis stuff is the stuff that naturally sticks out to me when I listen to music, so I guess that still counts as a “reaction?” 😂
If I were to do full on breakdowns, it would be like hour-long videos 🤣🤘

Dude, you have to see Pau not only singing, but also playing the drums in this song!! Is super awesome!!

Yes. I love the analysis! If you want to continue breaking
things down to a "music nerd" level, I feel a musician myself, who isn’t primarily a vocalist, you’ll notice things I wouldn't, and teach a "non-musician" and myself something.
You break it down easily enough to understand and, who knows, may give someone the confidence to pick up an instrument or start singing that may never have. And that’s beautiful.
    Viva The Warning! ❤🫶

I love this version because Pau is unchained here.
But it's more impressive when she sings it while drumming.
And yes, it's a gigantic middle finger, written when they where still teenagers!
The nanana's stand for i can't hear you
