  • Hello sweet friends! Today I am sharing with you an impromptu video I filmed, where I swatch and review the Forest Supergranulation set by Schmincke and also look at the Zebra Sarasa- nano pen for drawing and sharing my thoughts on that also. Hopefully next week my new paints will have arrived and I'll be able to do the unboxing I had hoped to do today!! Fingers crossed! Thank you so much for being here, I really hope you enjoy the video! xoxo

Patty- I love all of the colors. I'm not usually attracted to dark colors but am slowly becoming appreciative of them. I'm sorry the pen didn't work out for sketching and drawing, but you found another use for it. Please continue to share with us. I so look forward to your videos.

I think the idea that granulating watercolors only express themselves well on cold-pressed paper is a bit of a myth. I work mostly on hot press, and my paints granulate beautifully. Jean Lursson's gorgeous watercolor landscapes are mostly painted on hot press (www.youtube.com/@JeanLurssen) and the results speak for themselves. I think the amount of water is more crucial than the paper surface...these paints shine best when drenched. I especially like to slop on some paint with my paper at 45°, spray with water, and let the paint go where it will (within reason), tilting the paper this way and that. I call these Cat Paints--they don't respond well to control, but produce unexpectedly gorgeous results if you give them room to roam.
I bought several of these super-granulating paints, but the only one that made it into my main palette is Volcano Brown. The others seemed to be...under-pigmented or something.

  • @shellymay-cutpastememories6667

I have the Shire Set and yes, cold press really highlights the granulating of the pigments.

Congratulations on your milestone. 🎉 Thank you for providing really good content. I have a few pan Schminke SG colors: Tundra Green, Desert Green and Shire Yellow. I use them for back grounds. The Desert Green is AMAZING. Use a lot of water to get the best effect. I love your swatch charts. Consider a tutorial on how you make them. 🌹 BTW: we have all mistaken our tea/coffee for the water jar. 🙃

Thank you so much Erica! ❤❤ I'll have to add the colours you suggested to my wish list, especially the desert green! I am considering making a video about creating swatch cards just need to make my video set up a little more workable as at present, it is sooo awkward drawing as I can hardly get to the paper without contorting my body haha! xoxo

Skip the haze (look at the pigments & you’ll understand why-VERY similar, a lot of redundancy to Forest & shire..but less pigmented)
Ok..Volcano; the 2 main pigments are PY159 and PR108 (lemon yellow deep & a cadmium red light)
Volcano yellow, at least the one I got, VERY lightly pigmented. MUCH better: WN Lemon yellow deep. Also, the V Red is also light on the pigment, but not as bad as the yellow. Suggested to me are the granulating QOR Cad red light OR DaVinci Cad red deep. Both of these pigments are fairly rare, but Schminke uses them, to different degrees, in several of their sets. One VERY impressive combo I found, a heavily granulating brown-gray= the red + yellow + a touch of PBk11 or DS Lunar black. In fact, I’ve even used it in some of my Chinese paintings, a light side-brushed coat of this brown/gray for a bit of color in both the plum branches AND background of mountains. The granulation just adds a texture we can’t get in traditional paints or paint chips on Xuan.
While I have been using a raw double Xuan-which is much thicker and has a rougher surface compared to single xuans …TONIGHT I am going to attempt a Gongbi style (detailed) on the traditional ripe, or sized Xuan..a VERY, VERY THIN, delicate, almost smooth paper. My subject is a southern gray (US) squirrel and my color mix is absolutely perfect. I’m just not sure the paper will hold-up to the granulation and western binders..even with very short, quick strokes. My wonderful tutor is going to try and help me find a way to “adapt” the paint by using a small amt of a Chinese binder in the brush water. We shall see! 😁

  • @maryannprzybycien2013

I love granulating colors. I sometimes mix my own and see what I come up with.
My eyes keep going to the forest grey. That would be great for large rocks or a cliff face. They're all pretty though.
As far as the pens, I don't use them a lot in my art. I have the Pandafly Micro-Line pens, set of 10 in different sizes. Same as Micron, but not as expensive. I also bought a dip pen but haven't used it yet. Shame on me. (Sennelier has a nice burnt sienna ink.)
Anyhoo, I love watching your videos. Your voice is so calming that sometimes I struggle to keep my eyes open. That's not a bad thing! I struggle with anxiety and it's very therapeutic. Besides, I haven't fallen asleep yet. 😆

I can recommend the Platinum Carbon ink pen for drawing a good black watrproof line. I use it all the time , since many years back. It is an inexpensive fountain pen that come in fine and extra fine nibs and you can either use it with a Platinum Carbon ink cartridge or buy the ink in a bottle and use a syringe to fill an empty cartridge, but that can be messy. I love my pen and I never buy disposable black markers like the Micron anymore. Using this pen and the carbon ink has saved me a lot! I bought the ink cartridges on Amazon and I suppose one can find the pen there too. Thank you for a lovely video! You are so inspiring!

Another lovely video, and lovely paint! I haven't tried that pen, but sakura microns are hard to beat. If you want to try out a new pen that I loved though, check out the Zebra Fude brush pens. They have a bit of flex to the nib and are water resistant once dry. They don't go as fine as microns, but I like using both together, and drawing with the zebra fude pens is a pleasure.

Congratulations on reaching 1k subscribers. I would be interested is seeing how these watercolours look on hot paper. Maybe you would have to water down the pigments to see the granulation on hot paper. I do agree that these colours would make a lovely moody landscape painting.

    • @lilymoonart
      @lilymoonart  Před rokem

Thank you so much Shelley😊❤️ ! So far they have had variable results on hot pressed paper and it really depends on the brand of HP paper used I think. The Arches for example is super smooth so the pigment sits on the surface, not doing much but on the Winsor Newton HP paper, which has a little more texture, it works much better. I'll note down to make a video in the future comparing HP paper and CP paper with granulating colours, thank you so much for the suggestion! 😊
