- I bought 2 broken YLOD PS3s to see if I can fix them?
Another PS3 restoration, this second YLoD repair on the channel. This particular unit is a CECHE01 model, YLOD needs no introduction. The console doesn’t turn on and presents a yellow light followed by 3 beeps and a flashing red light i.e. the "Yellow Light of Death" or simply abbreviated YLoD.
PS3 YLOD Fixed with an Original Nec/Tokin Capacitor
On the PlayStation 3, the NEC/TOKIN capacitors are prone to failure, causing a Yellow Light if Death error. This is a guide on replacing those capacitors.
The Yellow Light of Death is not an error with one specific fix; rather, it is a more general failure. This guide addresses ONE of the POTENTIAL problems causing a PS3 Yellow Light of Death, however, these capacitors are prone to failure anyway, so they should be replaced (if you are experienced enough) to help the longevity of the console.
This video shows you everything you need to know about taking apart your Playstation3 Fat. If you need to replace the fan or the disk drive this video will show you how to get inside and disassemble your system. Since this system isn't the newest on the market anymore, it's cheaper to replace the parts yourself than it is to send them in for repairs.

How not to repair a YLOD console.
Dude, if you think that this solved the problem of YLOD, then you are deeply mistaken.
Disassemble, clean from dust and change the thermal paste - this is not enough.
Who will scalp RSX and PSX?
There, under the covers, is also thermal paste.
So expect the PS3 to die again soon.
Capacitors from NEC have nothing to do with it at all, why did you touch them? YLOD is a problem caused by overheating and poor soldering of the BGA chip.
I’m generally scared to talk about soldering, it’s horror.
It hurts me as a repairman to look at this.......
True. Only in very rare cases the necs are at fault. Why do fake videos always get so much attention?
So what needed to be done?

Good afternoon EG restoration, I really liked your work, commitment and dedication, essential for this role, I was just in doubt about the new capacitors, they are new NEC/TOKIN models, with the serial number 0E128 - 1200uF according to what came in the box. board, or, are they tantalum capacitors having the same capacitance? Thank you and a big hug.
Thank you very much!
This is how DK oldies should be restoring game consoles instead of ripping people off….
I highly doubt that he fixed anything.
Fun Fact: it's been already proven that those caps aren't the cause of failure. It's a defect in chipsets of that era.
Yes, but sometimes the caps fails before che chip itself that's why some ps3s are fixed replacing the nec/tokin
Yeah I hate seeing people just replace the caps without checking the syscon for the actual error. Just fucking the board up for no reason. "bUt iT woRkS nOW" Doubt it will for long.
@@thall6594 yeah it would play at max a week or 2 with normal use
He is so bad. Removing them with a screwdriver. And you right it’s because of a heat problem not the caps
@@christopherbolis2048 Not really. You are fixing them, because you are heating the BGA under the chips. It's temporarily.
Hey love to watch your videos super satisfying. I have a PS2 that won't start should I open it up and try to fix it or send it to get it repaired. I live in florida. Don't know much old console repair shops.
It’s rather easy it may just need a ribbon that runs for $7 and easy to install, or it needs a power supply. Perhaps just dirty. Mine did the same took 20 minutes to fix good luck 🤞

Were the tokens actually damaged/dfective or was the replacement just part of a general overhaul? (because the Nec Token caps are usually really really good and have generally not much to do with YLOD in the long run, at least not just by themselves)
actually the oposide. Nec tokins even on old laptops they faill.
Not true. Go do some more research @@HardcoreGR

@@0Asterite0 No because it worked again. Bro stop saying it's bad just because it's not extra perfect with syscon error checked. Not everyone has this kind of time and no matter what every PS3 Fat with the 90nm CPU GPU combo is doomed to die sooner or later, and I doubt about the fact that he has the desire and the capacity to frankenstein the console on it's own.
It was already a piece of trash, now at least it works, even for not very long it's still here.

Think I'd like to have a custom PCB for those capacitors to make it look a bit tidier, but good work of course. My original release PS3 is still going strong, but not used for a while. Have another early model PS3 that I got free, but was said not to work, so may give that one a look see when have the time.
I always thought that the problem with YLOD was the CPU and GPU, incredible! :D
In some cases yes but it’s usually either bad cooling or little to no thermal paste
the "cell" died on a lot of the ps2 compatible PS3s as they had a way smaller heatsink
In this case it probably was the gpu and replacing the tokins happened to get it working but trust me it will only fix it temporarily if the gpu is bad
@@felixlutticken5694 The CELL never was a problem. The real problem was the RSX solder balls between the chip and the tiny board under it.
It is, at least my was. I fixed it by removing the heat spreader and replacing the dry thermal past.
Absolutely stunning work. I still have my old fat 60 gig (500gig now) PS3, bought it brand new and it wasn't until recently I had to get repaired. Are those NEC chips usually the cause of YLOD?
no, it's usually the solder used under the gpu. 50ish% of the YLOD reports are the solder. The chips replaced here can also be a cause, but not to the extent of the GPU issue.
I do bga rework, and it's almost always a bad rsx chip or bga connections under the rsx, only way to permanently fix is to swap a slim rsx chip on to the cok001 002 boards.. Also called the Frankenstein mod. Works really well
Yes, the failure is usually the RSX. Sometimes the tokins fail, but that's pretty rare.
No they are not. Its normally the RSX
It's like 20% NEC tokin caps
why did you take off the nec tokins of one side and not the ones of the other side?
May I ask how you removed the warranty seal perfectly? What liquid is sprayed after heating it with a heat gun?
isopropyl alcohol very likely
I just got back 2 A01 models from a repair shop and they couldn’t fix YLOD on both. Can you fix mine??
I’m curious as to why you didn’t remove the heat spreaders and replace the thermal paste under them.
What in gods name, that's a pretty nuclear way to go about fixing this.
Very nice and clean job! What kind of capacitors did you use? Thanks in advance

Few questions.
How do I know if its the capacitor that needs replaced?
Why are you using different capacitors? And what type are they?
Usuaslly, the YLOD is caused by the *_STUPID_* rsx gpu chip being faulty, sometimes, it's the capacitors near it, but, if it's the gpu, theres not too much you can do other than painstakingly finding a replacement 65nm (CXD2992) version for it (make sure it's not the 90nm, as it has a fault with how the die is connected to the rest of the gpu).
The capacitors that he replaced are the NEC TOKINS.
Helo, On which site did you buy these electronic components plz

My brothers CECH-E01 has this issue. I had to open it and disassemble the disc drive to get a PS1 game out of it. Thankfully it works in my PS3 Super Slim
I think the first one you show is the first model of the console, retrocompatible PS2, very rare, glad you fixed it
You can see it’s a PS3 model CECHC04 at the 5:39 mark. This model is backwards compatible but lacks the emotion engine chip found in earlier CECHA and CECHB models. I found this information on the web.
The CECHC04 has got hybrid PS2 emulation, which means that the Graphics Synthesizer is on the motherboard, but the Emotion Engine is emulated by CELL. This means that this model has got additional routine for emulating PS2 Games: ps2_gxemu

A wild assumption is made that it’s the Tokins. No SYSCON check performed. Horrible removal of the Tokins by jabbing a screwdriver at it! Left the black strip of the Tokins on the board… clearly wasn’t using enough heat so the soldering job of the Caps was crusty and awful….. what exactly have you restored here?
I completely agree. I was cringing the whole time he ripped off the old caps and soldered the new ones. I hope no one uses this as an example of fixing YLOD.

you can ask an immodest question. How is the chip dump related to the replacement of the processor power harness? After all, it is known for certain that the screen of death on the console is associated with the video chip dump due to overheating. and how did you find out that it was the power harness that was faulty if you did not perform any diagnostics using an oscilloscope or a tester?
Always great work PS3 the best console ever

Hola amigo Como busco esos condensadores de cuantos volt son?
Ganz bescheiden Frage. Wie teuer war der Aufwand ?
The fixing looks doable until he started scraping the chips off and then soldering the smaller yellow chip. Was there a part where he diagnose the issues before doing it and then tested again prior to putting everything back together? I seen videos where they use multi-meters to test.
Usually it’s not the capacitors, it’s more or likely the RSX (the GPU). They were known for their insane power consumption and heat output. The 90 nm variants (the ones found in the launch models) had the most issues. When they started decreasing the size, this decreased power consumption and made them a lot cooler temperature wise. This is why the later Phats, Slims, and Super Slims are the more desirable models, even though they lose PS2 backwards compatibility
But can you fix the PS3 FAT that used to be repaired in the past with the same error is YLOD?
I would like that you give an explanation about that orange or yellow light. Mine is dead since long time 😢

No
What is the value of the replaced capacitors
What do you use to get out the scratches out?
Nothing , he replaced them with fake ones
NEC Tokins are not the cause of the YLOD. It is the RSX Chip. This is a temporary fix
I had a fat model PS3 starting in 2009 and around maybe 2014 or 2015 is when I experienced the yellow light of death. I don't have it anymore because I sent it to Playstation Support for a trade in and they sent me a Super Slim model PS3 which I still have to this day.
