What is Kattiyam Kurudhal?
Before Lord Murugan goes on procession on Silver Chariot, a devotee will carry a sceptre and announce to the celestials and other devotees that God is about to embark on a procession. While doing this he chants words in praise of Lord Murugan. The same thing will be done before God returns to his shrine. This ritual, known as Kattiyam Kurudhal, had been used for kings in the ancient Tamil Nadu. Kattiyam means panegyric (words of praise) of kings.
